Songs of Night and Darkness Trivia Questions

1. Vicki Lawrence sang about the night the lights went out in which southern state?

From Quiz
The Music of the Night

Answer: Georgia

Vicki released "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" in November of 1972. It was written by Vicki's then husband Bobby Russell and she recorded the demo. The song was meant for other hot artists at the time but none of them would touch it because of the controversial lyrics. The song is a Southern Gothic murder ballad that tells the story of an innocent man who is put to death for a murder he did not commit. Vicki decided to record and release the song herself and was rewarded with her only number one hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 of her career. At the time of its release Vicki was a regular on "The Carol Burnett Show" and was given her gold record for the song by Carol herself at the end of one of the shows. The song was covered by country legends Tanya Tucker in 1981 and Reba McEntire in 1991. This question was executed by Phoenix Rising member tazman6619.

2. This song has the title "Someday I'll Be Saturday Night"; can you name the band?

From Quiz Songs with the Word Night in the Title

3. Who sings 'The Night They Invented Champagne'?

From Quiz Join Me for 'A Little Night Music'

Answer: Gigi

'Gigi' is based on a 1944 French novel by Colette. It was made into a successful musical in 1958 with music by Alan Jay Lerner and lyrics by Frederick Loewe. The story is about a young Parisian girl, played by Lesley Caron, who is being trained by her aunt to be a courtesan. Gigi and her grandmother are good friends with a rich young man called Gaston. Hermione Gingold and Maurice Chevalier who play Gigi's grandmother and Gaston's uncle add greatly to the charm of this movie.

4. In 1973, Vicki Lawrence had a hit with which "night" song?

From Quiz Songs Of The Night

Answer: The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia

"The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia" was a Number One smash for Vicki Lawrence on the Billboard Hot 100 list. It was also her only hit. She was better known as a comedienne on CBS's "The Carol Burnett Show" between 1967 amd 1978.

From Quiz 'Night' Move

Answer: Jackie Wilson and Marvin Gaye

The song "Nightshift" was made as a tribute to two R&B singers who sadly passed away in 1984. Marvin Gaye was murdered after a heated argument with his own father Marvin Gaye Sr. Jackie Wilson, the man dubbed as "Mr. Excitement", suffered a heart attack during a performance in 1975. Admitted to a retirement home, Wilson would eventually succumb to pneumonia in 1984.

7. Which vocalist had the hit song "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes"?

From Quiz The Night Was Black

Answer: Bobby Vee

The song peaked at Number Three in 1963. Bobby Vee's top hits were "Take Good Care of My Baby" (Number One in 1961) and "Run to Him" (Number Two in 1961). Born Robert Veline, he formed a group called The Shadows in Fargo, North Dakota in 1959. After the tragic plane crash that took the lives of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and J.P. Richardson (Big Bopper), The Shadows filled in for Buddy Holly at his next scheduled show in Fargo.

8. Where was the doo-wop song "In the Still of the Night" first recorded?

From Quiz Night of the Living Songs

Answer: Church basement

9. Which 50s doo-wop song begins with the deep solo bass intro "do do do do DOO," followed by the lead singer voicing the song title?

From Quiz Have a Good Night, Sweetheart

Answer: Goodnite, Sweetheart, Goodnite

If you paid attention to the quiz title, this one was easy. The Spaniels, featuring lead singer and song writer Pookie Hudson, came out with this early R&B classic in 1954. It got another charge of airplay in the 1970s after being part of the movie soundtrack for the film "American Graffiti." None of the other choices is a 1950s doo-wop song.

10. "Dark Horse": This first "dark" album comes from a legendary musician and former Fab Four member. Which Beatle got laryngitis before his 1974 tour for this album and was consequently panned as "Dark Hoarse"?

From Quiz Pitch Dark

Answer: George Harrison

George Harrison was so ill that Ravi Shankar, his co-headliner, took over a large portion of the show. Since this was the first post-Beatles tour in the U.S. by a former member of the band, expectations were high and many were disappointed. This was also a time of upheaval in George Harrison's life, in which he founded his new record label, Dark Horse Records, delved deeply back into alcohol and drugs, and was left by his wife, Patty Boyd, for Eric Clapton. Harrison rewrote the Everly Brothers' hit "Bye Bye Love" for the album, including the line "There goes our lady, with a-you-know-who / I hope she's happy, old Clapper too."

11. "In the Midnight Hour" was Number One on Billboard's R&B chart in August, 1965. What Rock and Roll Hall Of Famer co-wrote and recorded this soul standard?

From Quiz The Night Was Dark

Answer: Wilson Pickett

From the early 60s through the mid 70s, Wilson Pickett was a major force in R&B as both writer and performer. He was an important, but unseen, character in the 1991 film, "The Commitments". Pickett co-wrote "Midnight Hour" with guitarist Steve Cropper, also in the Hall Of Fame as a member of Booker T. & The M.G.s.

12. "This Night Has Opened My Eyes" is a song by which much missed Mancunian quartet that rose to fame during the 80s?

From Quiz Night is the Keyword

Answer: The Smiths

13. "I woke last night to the sound of thunder. How far off, I sat and wondered; Started hummin' sumpin' from 1962 Ain't it funny how..." According to this 1976 Bob Seger classic, what was "funny"?

From Quiz Was It Night Or Merely Dark?

Answer: the night moves

In 1976, "Night Moves" made its way up the U.S. music charts to land at the number four position. This success changed the way Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band were viewed. No longer considered just a "regional" band, the song transformed them into a band with a national following in the U.S. Bob Seger's roots were in the American "heartland", and his work was largely focused on blue-collar workers. The Silver Bullet Band was composed of a group of Detroit musicians, while Bob himself was a native of Dearborn, later having lived Ann Arbor, Michigan. The song "Night Moves" was taken from an album of the same name.

14. Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and the late, great John Bonham; the band that gave the world 'Black Dog'... By what name were they collectively known?

From Quiz 'Twas a Dark, Black, Night - Rock Music On Vinyl

Answer: Led Zeppelin

The song, 'Black Dog', was the opening song on the 1971 album 'Led Zeppelin IV'. It was only released as a single in Australia and the United States on the 2nd of December 1971 and achieved its highest placing on the chart at numbers 11 and 15 in those countries respectively. Although no title appears on the album cover as such, the record label itself carried four symbols, one to represent each band member and because of this it has become known unofficially as 'Four Symbols'.

15. "Night Time in the Switching Yard" was part of which "Excitable Boy's" 1977 album that also included a tale about "Werewolves in London"?

From Quiz Night Time in the Switching Yard

Answer: Warren Zevon

Warren Zevon's 1977 album "Excitable Boy" featured the macabre but endearing single "Werewolves of London". The album peaked at number eight on the US Billboard Pop Album chart and was certified Platinum (1,000,000 sales) by the Recording Industry of America Association ("RIAA") in 1997. "Night Time in the Switching Yard" is an up tempo, almost disco style, tune with a heavy Latin guitar beat. Zevon was a iconic singer/songwriter whose popularity reached its peak with the 1978 "Excitable Boy" album. Zevon was friends and collaborated with Jackson Browne, who produced and performed on the album. "Werewolves of London" featured the drums of Mick Fleetwood and the bass of John McVie of Fleetwood Mac. Zevon enjoyed a resurgence in his career in the early 2000s before he was stricken with cancer and died on September 7, 2003. While the song "Night Time in the Switching Yard" was neither the most successful nor the best example of Zevon's talent, the entire body of "Excitable Boy" remains one of my and many other peoples favorite albums of the rock era.

16. "Smoke Rings In The Dark" is a song written in the midst of this singer's divorce. Can you guess who sang it?

19. Which artist sang "All Night Long (All Night)" in 1983?

From Quiz Sing Me to Sleep This Night

25. The silky-smooth Boyz II Men a cappella rendition of "In the Still of the Night" reached #3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1993. Which American doo-wop group recorded the original?

From Quiz The Music of the Night

Answer: The Five Satins

The Five Satins originally recorded the song in the basement of St. Bernadette Church in New Haven, Connecticut, and released it in 1956 as the B-side to the upbeat track, "The Jones Girl". It was apparently styled as "In the Still of the Nite" to avoid confusion with Cole Porter's popular 1937 song, although such misspellings were also trending in doo-wop at the time. Radio disc jockeys favored the flip side of the record, and thanks in part to some generous airtime, "In the Still of the Night" became one of the most recognizable doo-wop tracks. Remarkably, The Five Satins charted with the original version on the Hot 100 three separate times (reaching #24 in 1956, #81 in 1959, and #99 in 1961). This question was composed in the still of the night by Phoenix Rising's JCSon.
