McCall believed that Hickok had killed his brother Lew, back in Kansas, and was out for revenge. The dead man's hand are the cards Hickok was holding when McCall shot him in his head. Calamity Jane was Hickok's girlfriend at the time. It has been said the two were married, although there is no record of a ceremony to back up the claim.
