'M*A*S*H' - Season 5 Trivia

1. In the opening scene several of the M*A*S*H-ers are playing poker. A few minutes later, a broke and desperate Klinger offers to sell an item in order to get back in the game. What does he sell and who does he sell it to?

From Quiz "M*A*S*H" - "Dear Sigmund"

Answer: Margaret - a pair of earrings.

Klinger swore that the earrings went for $7.00 at the Tokyo PX. BJ said, "Klinger, don't you think that hoops before breakfast is a little trashy?" Klinger replied, "If I thought it would get me out, I'd wear hula hoops in my ears." He then lowered his asking price to $2.50 and Margaret said she'd take them. Klinger said, "I hope I win them back. I don't want the holes in my ears to close up."

Answer: Eight

Eight months seems like a rather short time for an engagement, but in reality this amount of time is rather long when you consider the amount of time she was engaged during the run of the show. Margaret first announces her engagement in the second episode of the fifth season 'Margaret's Engagement', which first aired on 9/28/76. In this episode, airing on 3/15/77 (the last one of the fifth season), she is already getting married. In real time that's only six and a half months! Did that much time elapse during the fifth season of M*A*S*H, or am I just being a little too nitpicky?

Answer: Bidwell

Colonel Bidwell insists on knowing who the most 'outstanding' doctor at the 4077th is...and Colonel Potter reluctantly responds that it's Hawkeye. Bidwell immediately insists that he'll be transferring Hawkeye to the personal services of a certain General Korshak. Potter responds that Korshak won't want Hawkeye...too disagreeable!

Answer: Frank

As per usual, Frank's distinct flair for social faux pas gets the best of him. Frank offers to replace Potter at his operating table, raising the fact that Potter is old. Potter's response is to suggest that he can match Frank 'incision for incision, suture for suture, clamp for clamp and patient for patient!' Hawkeye adds, 'But not goof for goof.'

Answer: Frank

Frank sees that BJ is working on a young soldier's foot, and claims to be an expert in the area. He also claims that the wound looks 'fishy', to which Hawkeye responds, 'I think he has a fish fetish'.

Answer: Klinger

Klinger was on guard duty when Margaret was summoned away to deliver the Korean baby in the middle of the night. He was the only one who knew where she went.

Answer: To fix the stove in their tent

According to the nurses, Hawkeye is the 'only one' who can fix the stove in their tent. I find this hard to believe since they merely need to re-light the pilot light. Couldn't one of them do it, or perhaps BJ? Oh wait, then the plot for the episode would have no basis...never mind.

Answer: Tamer of the Tiger Tank

Potter continues his conversation with Bidwell, discouraging him from selecting Hawkeye as the General's personal physician. He suggests that, 'Pierce is a maverick, from the top of his unshorn head to the tips of his uncut toenails.'

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - '38 Across'

Answer: A 'BB' game

Frank's game is a small box, covered on the top with glass, featuring BBs which are rolled around into small slots or holes...remember those? Throughout the episode we watch Frank go to work assiduously on this game, which he finally masters near the end, only to have it ruined by Hawkeye, who loosens the BBs from the holes.

Answer: Father Mulcahy

Father Mulcahy has lost $16 during the card game and laments this fact after the game. Naturally, he can announce that he is 'unlucky at cards', but how does he know he is 'unlucky at love'? It seems to me that he hasn't given the latter a fair shot.

Answer: Fudge

Though it's extremely hot outside, the nurses are content to cook hot fudge...in a helmet of all places! When Margaret enters the tent she smells the fudge and immediately reminds the nurses that cooking is against regulations in personnel quarters. Rules, rules, rules!

Answer: Diving flippers

Sidney describes Hawkeye as having a 'personality that had split two for one' while making the rounds in post-op. This is one of those scenes that separates the Hawkeye lovers from the Hawkeye haters, I would imagine.

Answer: Colonel Potter

Colonel Potter can`t read Margaret`s handwriting as to when the last morphine dose was given to the patient.

And, I might add, one of the single worst basketball games I have ever seen. Klinger's dribbling is atrocious, and the rest of the actors appear never to have stepped on a basketball court in their life. Radar serves as a very biased referee; he gives Colonel Potter all the breaks. Mercifully, Donald arrives and breaks up the game when he introduces himself to the boys.

Answer: Woodruff

Woodruff owes both Hawkeye and BJ money, as he has drawn I.O.U.s for two card games in a row. Unable to pay them back their money, he offers to promote them. You see, Sgt. Woodruff is in charge of the mimeograph machine at I-CORPS. In their usual unselfish manner, BJ and Hawkeye forego their own promotion in favor of one for Radar. Let the fun begin!

Radar searchs the camp and comes up empty.

Answer: Frank

After making his announcement to the gang in the mess tent, Donald spots Frank approaching. The latter immediately runs from the mess tent with the former on his heels. Donald quickly accosts Frank, who is now petrified with fear. Rather than the expected fight, however, Donald thanks Frank for inspiring Margaret's call to him, and in return for his feeling of indebtedness, he requests Frank be his best man. Frank responds with a very amusing giggle fit.

Answer: The nurse`s shower

Radar tells Colonel Potter that he searched everywhere and could not find Margaret. Then Potter tells him to check the nurse`s shower because that`s the only place Radar hasn`t checked.

Answer: Mai Ping

What Mulligan doesn't tell Radar the whole story! Aside from Mai Ping there is a child (a very cute one, I might add!) The baby's name is Lee Chin...Lee Chin Mulligan! Radar has now become a surrogate father.

Answer: The Tennessee Waltz

The first verse of the song goes:

'I was waltzing with my darlin' to the Tennessee Waltz, When an old Friend I happened to see, Introduced him to my loved one and while they were waltzing, My friend stole my sweetheart from me.'

During the singing, some of the cast members get the lyrics wrong. Potter replaces 'loved one' with 'true love' and Hawkeye sings 'dancing' instead of 'waltzing'.

Answer: Essex

Tippy Brooks is apparently a puzzle freak, he 'does the double crostic in ink', says Hawkeye. Luckily, the Essex is currently docked in Pusan Harbor, just a phone call away. Hawkeye is unable to contact Lieutenant Brooks, who is in surgery, so he leaves an 'urgent' message which will soon get them both in trouble.

Answer: Leather whip

'Oh! Oh, that thoughtful darling!' cries Margaret, who continues 'He knows I love fine leathers!' Much to Radar's chagrin, she then proceeds to show her handicraft with the whip, flailing it about her tent with much alacrity. Margaret proves very skillful with her new gift!

Answer: Bomber pilot

Hawkeye finds that this young pilot is quite nonchalant about his work, not even having seen the people he bombs. Hawkeye decides to teach the young man a lesson by bringing him into the OR, where he watches Potter perform surgery on a young girl who has been injured by a bomb. When the pilot asks whose bomb did the damage, Potter responds, 'What difference does that make?' The pilot responds, 'A lot. It makes a lot of difference.' Potter retorts, 'Not to her.'

Answer: Edward Binns

The General calls Hawkeye a 'real hard nose', and claims 'that makes two of us'. You might recognize Binns from some of his other roles, which include '12 Angry Men' (Juror 6) and 'Patton' (Maj. Gen. Walter Bedell Smith).

Answer: Mako

Mako was one of my favorite of the 'M*A*S*H' guest-stars. Though a Japanese-born actor, he portrayed a number of different Korean characters in the series. You may also recognize Mako as the actor who played Admiral Isoruku Yamamoto in the movie 'Pearl Harbor' or perhaps in his roles as Kungo Tsarong in 'Seven Years in Tibet' or Yoshida in 'Rising Sun'.

Answer: A solid gold Chinese watch

Apparently, the North Korean doctor is willing to give up his gold wristwatch in return for what he considers to be freedom. Unfortunately, this does not seem plausible to me, not because the bribe is unlikely to work, but rather because I doubt he would have been able to hold on to such a bourgeois item, especially as a Communist officer. He claims that his wristwatch has Chinese numbers on it...how exotic for Sparky!

Answer: Ritz crackers

Father Mulcahy is rather disappointed to receive the Ritz crackers, they will not be of much good during the eucharist ceremony (but he does find them quite edible, nonetheless.) The good Father asks if his biblical bookmarks have come, prompting Radar to go into his mailbag. Radar pulls out a bra that he has accidently pilfered from Margaret's tent, much to the shock of Father Mulcahy. Radar claims that the bra is 'athletic equipment'...a 'slingshot', no less! Father Mulcahy responds with a smile and the following, 'With a slingshot like that I think David could have slain two Goliaths.'

Klinger is sleeping because he was on guard duty the night before.

Answer: Cox

Admiral Cox is aptly played by the actor Dick O'Neill (who appeared in movies such as 'The Jerk', 'Turk 182' and 'Prizzi's Honor', while Oliver Clark admirably portrays Hawkeye's friend Lieutenant Brooks. Clark also appeared as Ben Pierce in the 'M*A*S*H' episode 'Mail Call Three' from the sixth season.
