'M*A*S*H' - Season 6 Trivia Questions

2. When the supplies have run low and they are out of sutures, what do the doctors have to use?

From Quiz 'The Light That Failed'

Answer: Klinger's sewing kit

And who better than the 4077's own Christian Dior to supply the doctors with sewing materials? I think I only heard Margaret mention sewing on a button (for her father) in one episode throughout the whole series, but Klinger was always making new clothes.

3. What song was playing over the P.A. system while Radar is delivering the mail at the beginning of this episode?

From Quiz "M*A*S*H" Season 6: "Fallen Idol"

Answer: "You Make Me Feel So Young"

"Keep The Home Fires Burning" was sung at the end of the episode "War of Nerves". "Tennessee Waltz" was played/sung in a number of different episodes, including Season 5's episode, "Movie Tonight". "Mississippi Mud" was sung in Season 3's episode "The General Flipped at Dawn".

4. Radar appears in the Swamp with good news for BJ. A telegram from Peg has come, informing BJ that they are now eligible to purchase an acre of land at what location near the San Francisco bay area?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'The Merchant of Korea'

Answer: Stinson Beach

BJ is tickled pink, and he should be. Stinson Beach is a lovely stretch of northern California coast along the Pacific Ocean. It's not far from Mill Valley, where BJ and Peg call home. All BJ needs to do is send Peg money for a down payment, and the acre of land is theirs. That's the tricky part.

5. When we left the last quiz in this series, Hawkeye had just been injured after a mortar blast near a tiny hut in which he and Margaret have taken shelter. What type of object has caused Hawkeye's injury?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Comrades In Arms' (Part II)

Answer: A hunk of wood

Margaret literally says, 'You've got a hunk of wood in there, do you want me to take it out?' Hawkeye responds, 'Of course I do! If I want a souvenir I'll go to the gift shop.' When Margaret actually does extract the wood (after some extreme and very convincing histrionics by Alan Alda) we get a look at it. Looks very painful!

6. So let's get to the big question. Fans of 'M*A*S*H' probably never imagined that Hawkeye and Margaret could ever get amorous. So who was it that came up with the script detailing this unlikely event?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Comrades In Arms' (Part I)

Answer: Alan Alda

Alan Alda both wrote the script for this episode and co-directed it with Burt Metcalfe, the producer. I suppose that Alda wanted to finally have a go at Hot Lips, having heard all the rumors!

7. As this episode fades in we see Hawkeye, BJ and Colonel Potter being lectured by another army colonel whose specific role is to make battle casualty estimates. What is this colonel's fitting surname?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'The Grim Reaper'

Answer: Bloodworth

Colonel Bloodworth is ably played by Charles Aidman. Bloodworth seems a fitting name for a man who tallies casualty rates. Interestingly, one of the most interesting 'M*A*S*H' scriptwriters was named Linda Bloodworth. Coincidence? Perhaps not! Contrast the name Bloodworth to 'Aidman', the actor's real name, and the intrigue gets even deeper.

8. This episode begins with an announcement from the 1952 Summer Olympic games, a theme that continues throughout the episodes. Where are the Olympic games being played during this episode?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'The M*A*S*H Olympics'

Answer: Helsinki

The 1952 Summer Olympics indeed occurred in Helsinki, Finland, and featured a very successful performance by the U.S. Olympic team (which took home 76 medals in total). Specifically mentioned in excerpted footage during the episode are the following events: the torch ceremony, lit by Finnish sports legend Paavo Nurmi; the marathon, won by Czech Emil Zatopek in record time; the pole vault, won by American Reverend Bob Richards; the steeplechase, won by American F.B.I. man Horace Ashenfelter and the women's 4x100m sprint competition, won by the U.S.

9. Colonel Potter receives a phone call from army headquarters, it's his pal Colonel Abrams. The army has decided to issue new military money in exchange for the old. What is the term that is used for this army issue currency?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Change Day'

Answer: Scrip

The term 'scrip' is short for 'subscription receipt', and refers to provisional certificates of money issued by banks, companies or other organizations (for example, the U.S. army) that may be used to exchange for formal, government issued currency. The point of using scrip is to fight off counterfeiters and black marketeers, as the scrip can be more frequently changed.

10. The 4077th is stuck in a supply crunch again, and everyone is annoyed by it. Along with a shortage of light bulbs, what other item in the operating room have they completely run out of in this scene?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'The Light That Failed'

Answer: Sutures

While Klinger plays musical light bulbs in the operating room, the surgeons all bicker (particularly Charles) about the lack of supplies. Particularly worrisome is the lack of both 4.0 and 3.0 silk. Hawkeye must resort to using Klinger's sewing thread for sutures.

11. Typically, Sidney Freedman arrives at the M*A*S*H 4077th of his own free will. This time, however, he arrives as a patient. Where has Sidney been wounded?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'War of Nerves'

Answer: Head

It looks like Major Freedman has taken a 'friendly' shell fragment in the head. He was giving therapy to a young soldier in a foxhole when the Chinese made a surprise sudden offensive. Luckily, Sidney is perfectly able to sit up by himself and communicate comfortably with Hawkeye. His wound is superficial.

12. Radar and Colonel Potter happily sing away in the Colonel's office as this episode opens, when suddenly the phone rings. It's the provost marshal's office to investigate BJ. What is the accusation against BJ?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Last Laugh'

Answer: That he's an imposter

Of course the viewer soon discovers that there is no investigation, it's only a mischievous friend of BJ's looking for a good laugh. Radar sings the 'ABC' song at the beginning of the episode while he thumbs through the files in Colonel Potter's filing cabinet. The Colonel joins in the song for the first round, but requests that Radar cease the childish song when he begins anew.

13. In the Swamp, Charles is trying to open a can of truffles from his gourmet dinner basket. What type of coin does he ask Hawkeye and B.J. for to help open the can?

From Quiz M*A*S*H 4077th- "The Grim Reaper"

Answer: Quarter

Charles asks if either of them has a quarter so he can open his can of truffles. He then gives Hawkeye and B.J. just one cracker with liverwurst on it for their help.

14. Has crazy Klinger met his match? While dishing up food with the new guy, Boots Miller, Klinger hands him a ladle. What does Boots think the ladle is?

From Quiz "M*A*S*H*" - "Major Topper"

Answer: A microphone

Later Klinger joins Miller in their tent, where Miller proceeds to use the ladle as a camera. Klinger responds, "Come off it, Miller! Who you kiddin'? You can't take a picture with a microphone!"

15. What comes on the supply truck the first time it appears in the episode?

From Quiz 'The Light That Failed'

Answer: ice cream churns, salt tablets and mosquito netting

Colonel Potter was agitated to find that they received nothing that they needed during a winter in Korea, and everything they did receive was useless.

16. Radar talks with Hawkeye and B.J. about his desire to become "a hot lover". Where does Hawkeye tell Radar to go to find a lady that "reminds him of his father and let nature take its course"?

From Quiz "M*A*S*H" Season 6: "Fallen Idol"

Answer: The Pink Pagoda

Hawkeye tells Radar to write himself a weekend pass, borrow a jeep, and go down to the Pink Pagoda in Seoul. Radar musters up enough courage to say "Okay, I will." As soon as he gets to the door of the swamp, however, he says "I feel different already. I think I'm getting a fever." Ah, sweet, innocent, lovable Radar.

17. And now for a question that will test your attention span. The currency exchange will involve a switch from which color money to which color?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Change Day'

Answer: Blue to red

My apologies for the very detailed question, but I felt it necessary to see if you were paying attention. After all, beginning the following day, the blue scrip will become worthless. Colonel Potter instructs Klinger to make sure that all roads in and out of the compound be guarded by military police so that black marketeers will be unable to have access to the camp with their arbitrage schemes (foreshadowing!)

18. Soon after the annoying phone call, Colonel Potter is confronted with an even more vexing problem. Enter, Max Klinger and his invisible camel! Klinger wears an Arab headdress and coddles his invisible camel, which he has named...?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Last Laugh'

Answer: Habibi

According to Klinger, Habibi is a high-spirited two-humper (or bactrian) that spits. Colonel Potter is especially annoyed at Klinger's antics on this day, especially now that he has to deal with the provost marshal's office. Radar is rather amused, however, and insists that he will write home about it. After Klinger exits, Radar comments on the smell, which Colonel Potter explains is 'Lebanese aftershave'.

19. The second oddity in the introductory sequence of this episode occurs in the mess tent. Which 'M*A*S*H' character is apparently rather naive about the relationship between Margaret and Frank?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Fade In, Fade Out' (Part I)

Answer: Father Mulcahy

Despite having lived alongside Burns and Houlihan for months, Father Mulcahy claims to only have a 'suspicion' about the relationship between the two erstwhile lovers. Hawkeye has to explain that Margaret and Frank 'knew each other in the biblical sense' ('Both testaments', BJ adds.) I have a hard time believing anyone, even a priest, could be this naive.

20. Who does Charles share his gourmet dinner with?

From Quiz M*A*S*H 4077th- "The Grim Reaper"

Answer: Margaret

Charles shares his gourmet dinner with Margaret in her tent and they both become ill from eating the spoiled canned pheasant.

21. Klinger tells Boots to lay off his amateur crazy act. Boots agrees. Still, he proceeds with some strange behavior just before going to bed. What?

From Quiz "M*A*S*H*" - "Major Topper"

Answer: Saying goodnight to his shoes and socks.

Miller was played by Hamilton Camp. When I saw him I exclaimed "Oh! I know that guy!" This is probably because Camp was one of those actors that made the rounds on many shows, from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" to "Star Trek: Deep Space 9".

22. What book did BJ receive, and who wrote it?

From Quiz 'The Light That Failed'

Answer: 'The Rooster Crowed at Midnight' by Abigail Porterfield

BJ was excited because he liked to read mysteries.

23. Back at the straw hut, Hawkeye and Margaret start warming the air with some friendly conversation and a touch of liquor. Specifically, Hawkeye has brought a bottle of Scotch along with him. From whence comes this friendly elixir?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Comrades In Arms' (Part II)

Answer: Japan

I have never heard of Japanese Scotch, but apparently it exists. Margaret, who has never been much of a teetotaller, welcomes the drink and Hawkeye's conversation. The two of them use some small clay cups they find in the hut, one of which Hawkeye describes thusly: 'It can't be too dirty, whatever is in the bottom is still alive.'

24. Klinger hears of Ames' trouble and has a brilliant idea. He plans to eat his way out of the army by gaining a quick 60 lbs. In pursuit of this ridiculous goal, what food item does Klinger 'overdose' on during the episode?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'The M*A*S*H Olympics'

Answer: Salami

Klinger embarks on a strict diet of Lebanese salami, a meat which apparently has a very unique aroma. By the end of the episode Klinger has eaten enough to upset his stomach. He claims that he has consumed fully 10 salamis, and, knowing Klinger, there is little reason to doubt this claim! Klinger calls his program 'food for freedom', while Potter characterizes it as 'suicide by salame'.

25. What type of bird was the main course in Charles` gourmet dinner?

From Quiz M*A*S*H 4077th- "The Grim Reaper"

Answer: Pheasant

The spoiled pheasant was in a can and Margaret asked Charles if this was the way pheasant tasted because she said it tasted funny. He assured her that pheasant tasted that way.

26. That night, the doctors discover that they are down to only one box of morphine, and that box might be contaminated. No more is coming from Seoul, either. One person says they should go ahead and use the morphine anyway. Who?

From Quiz "M*A*S*H*" - "Major Topper"

Answer: Charles

Hawkeye then suggests they try it out on Charles.

27. How does Klinger injure himself leaving Colonel Potter's office after calling to inquire about the missing supplies?

From Quiz 'The Light That Failed'

Answer: He stubs his toe on something.

He was wearing open-toed shoes, rather than army boots.

28. Not able to find her ring anywhere, Margaret soon discovers that it has been thrown in the trash. Who is the culprit of this unforgivable misdeed?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Patent 4077'

Answer: Klinger

Klinger was cleaning around the prep room and mistook the wad of tissue containing Margaret's ring for trash. When Margaret asks Klinger to retrieve the tissue, he claims that it's already been taken away by a garbage truck. After threats on his very existence, Klinger runs off to find a jeep so he can chase down the garbage truck.

29. The second favor Charles asks of BJ is for his Swampmate to fetch him a cup of coffee. BJ is very reluctant to submit to this request, but Charles feigns pain in which part of his body in order to emphasize his needs?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'The Merchant of Korea'

Answer: Back

The following morning, BJ and Hawkeye are off to the mess tent for some breakfast. Charles remains in bed and, just before BJ exits the tent, requests a small favor. He asks BJ to pour him a cup of coffee. BJ refuses. Charles then feigns back pain while rising from his cot and BJ succombs with annoyance to his tentmates machinations.
