This sixth season of "MasterChef Junior" once more saw the arrival of children aged 8 through 13 vying for the title of best junior amateur home cook. As the kids were led to the kitchen they were informed that alongside Gordon and Christina as regular judges, they would be joined by former regular judge Joe Bastianich, who returned to the show after a three year absence. He previously appeared in the third "MasterChef Junior" season (and the fifth general season). He replaced Aarón Sanchez, who would return for the ninth adult season. Joe would take Christina's spot for that one as a permanent replacement.

After two episodes of auditions, twenty cooks between the ages of 8 and 13 were sent into the main competition where one or two were eliminated in each episode. This was the first season of "Junior" to feature twenty kids; the previous one saw twenty-four.

At the start of this season, twenty-four kids between the ages of 8 and 13 entered the MasterChef Kitchen and claimed their white aprons from inside a giant pinata head of Gordon Ramsey. All two dozen kids joined in on the first Mystery Box Challenge too, opening it up to find a single bun to fill with the burger of their creation. It resulted in a proceeding Elimination Test in which the remaining kids needed to make any dish with marshmallows as the hero ingredient. Alexander and Kade, both of whom burnt their marshmallows, were sent home.

Nineteen new cooks, all between the ages of 8 and 13, were brought into the MasterChef Kitchen for a chance at the title, and after searching the MasterChef Pantry for their white aprons, they engaged with their first Mystery Box assortment. To the kids' surprise, three different contestants were deemed the winners, and all three were given immunity from the next challenge and the chance to determine the dish everyone else would be cooking, a choice between three of Joe's favourite food: pasta. Choosing between ravioli, lasagna, and pappardelle, they chose for the other sixteen to make pappardelle and a record-setting five cooks were sent home.

This season brought sixteen 8-13 year olds into the MasterChef kitchen to compete for the trophy and the $100,000 prize. The season started immediately-- no need for auditions-- as the judges brought season 1 winner Alexander in to kick things off. The show started the season off with a Mystery Box curated entirely by Alexander, one that he gave thirteen dish examples for to start off the new wave of child chefs. Natalie was deemed the winner of this first challenge with her seared pork chop. She received immunity and a typical reward, choosing the food of the first Elimination Test.

While most seasons of "MasterChef" have involved a general audition process where the home cooks present dishes to the judges one-by-one, "MasterChef Junior" was the first to do away with this convention, bringing twenty-four child chefs into the kitchen from the get-go and opting to whittle them down to a total of twelve for the main event. All contestants this season ranged in age from 9 to 13.

After numerous kids were flown to Los Angeles for in-person auditions, the field was narrowed down to sixteen youngsters between the ages of 8 and 12 who would make it to the MasterChef Kitchen for a chance at the prize. This season, filmed in 2019, was held for airing until after the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning that all competitors were two to three years older before they were seen on TV. Unlike other seasons of the show, eliminations generally saw one competitor going home per episode (past seasons saw two per episode).

For the first time in "MasterChef Junior" since season 4, the home cooks selected to compete were not required to win a white apron through audition sessions. Past seasons of the show shared the traditional audition process (in which contestants faced off against other home cooks to with the apron) and last season did so down gender lines. Instead, twenty-four pre-selected youngsters between the ages of 8 and 12 kicked off the season's first episode and eliminated in doubles as the season progressed.

In the first episodes of this season, forty junior home cooks were brought to the MasterChef Kitchen-- twenty boys and twenty girls-- in order to audition for their chance at a white apron. This time around, there were twenty-four white aprons to give, being rewarded to the top dozen boys and the top dozen girls. They started with the girls, who were asked to make a perfect medium rare filet mignon for their aprons before those who didn't make the grade produced their signature dish. The boys did the same soon after, making a chicken breast dish instead of the filet.

Although the chefs got to start off simple by cooking dishes with rice for their first Mystery Box Challenge, most of them were immediately propelled into a complex Elimination Test wherein they needed to replicate a Gordon Ramsay signature dish-- a hand-roasted seabass on a cauliflower puree served with carmelized beet root and sauce vierge. Ramsay showed them how to do it, but ultimately, the kids had to get it perfect in one go. Adam excelled in this challenge while Elisabeth and Solomon were eliminated for plating with missing or raw pieces.

Although Natalie, Mitchell, and Oona were brought forward for their stellar Mystery Box dishes, Natalie was given the advantage for hers, and as such she was able to choose the food everyone else would be cooking for their next meal. The theme was 'birds', and she was able to choose between chickens, ducks, and turkeys. She chose chicken, and the other fifteen kids had to innovate for the judges with any part of the bird. While three kids won the challenge, four were considered the bottom. Instead of removing one or two kids from the competition, the judges eliminated Berry, Coco, Isabella, and Nasir, a record for amount of eliminations in a single non-audition episode.

Episode 4 started with the children drawing coloured straws to divide some of the home cooks into teams. Three teams of three kids were, thus, put into coloured aprons and pit against each other to make perfect milkshakes with the two leading teams being safe from elimination. This meant that Gracie, Evan, and Pierce (with nine) and Anthony, Olivia, and Henry (with seven) didn't need to make a chicken and waffles dish in the proceeding challenge. At the end of the challenge, the three judges drew straws; Joe, drawing the short straw, had to dunk himself into a giant milkshake to close out the round.

Answer: Corn dogs

As is typical of a "Junior" season's second episode, the judges chose contestants randomly and pushed them into a reduced Team Challenge while the others cheered on. This time, six kids (Eddie, Evan, Gonzalo, Justise, Lila, and Peyton) were put into teams of two based on drawing coloured short sticks. In these teams they had ten minutes to make perfect corn dogs to be judged by Gordon and Christina. For getting thirteen, Evan and Justise got to douse the judges in batter and take immunity in the proceeding challenge-- a vegan burger judged by guest judge Mayim Bialik.

Answer: Seven-layer dip

With eighteen kids left in the MasterChef Kitchen, the contestants were pushed to work in one of three pre-determined teams to work, one after the other, to make the best seven-layer dip for the judges. Although Ian, Avery, and Kaya were team captains, each child was responsible for one or two layers of the dish consisting of beans, corn, salsa, lettuce, guacamole, sour cream/chives, and cheese. The challenge ultimately sent one team to safety while the rest had to cook with smelly ingredients to avoid elimination.

Coming out of the individual meringue challenge, Jimmy received the opportunity to pair up all of the contestants (fourteen of them) for the proceeding test of skill. In this challenge, the contestants had to work together to make sausages from scratch, using whatever meat they wanted from a variety of traditional and unconventional meats in the pantry. With only an hour to conceptualize, cook, and plate, Alexis and Micah failed to make a passing dish, mostly due to their underwhelming sides.

Answer: Scotch egg

Heading out of the MasterChef Kitchen for their third round of competition, the children visited a renaissance fair to make large meals for fifty-one patrons. In addition to needing to cook a scotch egg as a starter, teams also had to make a full entree including meat-on-the-bone as a star, regardless of protein option selected. Eva's blue team took the loss in this round though Jillian, one of her team members, was sent home.

Answer: Completing the challenge bound together

The top sixteen junior home cooks drew donuts from a box in episode 7 and were told that they would be split into teams based on coloured icing on their selections-- a green team, a yellow team, and a pink team (of two kids each) were left to battle it out to perfectly-dress as many donuts from a pile of one hundred as they could in ten minutes. Emily and Olivia finished twenty-nine and Beni and Quani finished twenty-eight, allowing them to sit on the balcony through a tough Elimination Challenge involving Matilda Ramsay's burger and fries dish. After the donut challenge, all three judges were dunked in donut toppings as a gag.

Answer: Michelle Obama

With their second Mystery Box Challenge, the Top 14 were greeted with a video message from Michelle Obama who asked that the children cook Mystery Box dishes with MyPlate in mind, creating a meal with half a plate of fruit and veggies. Justise won the challenge and a trip to the White House. What followed was an Elimination Challenge in which the children cooked dishes inspired by their mother while "Modern Family" actress Julie Bowen joined the judging panel. Following this challenge, Mashu and Donovan were eliminated, leaving twelve.

Answer: Croquembouche

Episode 5 saw the chefs heading out for their first field trip, attending a birthday party at which they had to serve other kids their age. When this team challenge was said and done, it sent the losing red team into a baking Pressure Test during which the participants had to construct a croquembouche from scratch. After a number of children struggled with their pastries and caramel, Derek and Nate were eliminated for their lower quality showings. This was the first Pressure Test of the season.

Answer: Alligator

The third episode of this season featured a Mystery Box Challenge themed around foods 'better with age' and containing aged New York strip steaks, aged balsamic vinegar, and blue cheese amongst others. Additionally, they had the opportunity to use fresh baby vegetables from the pantry to elevate their dishes. Andrew won the challenge and the ability to choose the meat for everyone else's next dish (between rattlesnake, snapping turtle, and alligator). He chose alligator, and while some excelled with the tricky meat, Kyler and Mia were sent home.

From Quiz "MasterChef Junior (US)" - Season 2

Answer: Tied together

To start the third episode of the competition, the top ten contestants were tasked with matching up (by random draw of cupcakes) and taking seventy-five minutes to work together to cook a dozen cupcakes. They could choose as many cupcake flavours as they wanted, but they had to be bound by legs and hips, effectively making this a three-legged challenge. Logan and Sean were given the win, making two different cupcakes with technical finesse. They won the option to share in choosing the next dish based on Gordon's childhood favourite meals. The boys chose shepherd's pie, a dish they wouldn't need to make (receiving immunity), and one that Gordon's mother would be judging.

From Quiz "MasterChef Junior (US)" - Season 6

Answer: Breakfast

For winning the Matilda Ramsay challenge, Evan and Mikey were chosen to be team captains as the Top 14 were taken to the Hilton Los Angeles to cook breakfast (five different dishes) for numerous room guests. The room occupants would be able to vote on which dishes were better. Ultimately, Evan led his team to victory, sending Mikey's red team into a Pressure Test to make Joe Bastianich's MasterChef-quality risotto. The challenge got both Emily and Pierce sent home, leaving twelve in the competition.

From Quiz "MasterChef Junior (US)" - Season 5

Answer: Blowtorch

Although the Top 12 split into teams to share in the effort of making pistachio pudding pies, nine of them were brought before the judges to test their technical skills with a blowtorch. While most of the kids made savoury dishes, others either flopped or excelled massively with desserts. Ultimately, the two children who were eliminated failed to bring forth plates that properly used the hero device-- Jasmine and Syd were asked to leave their MasterChef aprons and depart.

From Quiz "MasterChef Junior (US)" - Season 4

Answer: Christina Tosi

Leading into their sixth session in the MasterChef Kitchen, the Top 14 child chefs were split, once again, into two teams, this time to make the first drink of "MasterChef". For this, the teams of seven needed to work together to make a dispenser of raspberry mint lemonade, adequately working to create the best blend of ingredients to be judged in a blind tasting by Christina Tosi. Although the Red Team won (and got immunity), both teams were soaked by giant lemonade-filled water balloons to close out the challenge. The losing team had to fight to survive with surf and turf dishes.

From Quiz "MasterChef Junior (US)" - Season 7

Answer: Cupcakes

Winning a Mystery Box Challenge involving duck, Evie was given the chance to pair up all remaining contestants to participate in a unique Elimination Challenge which would result in the winning duo getting a recipe published in the "MasterChef Junior Baking Cookbook". Jaala and Malia excelled with their orange cupcakes with vanilla-bean cinnamon frosting, but in fairness, all of the children performed well in the task. As a result, no one was eliminated in this episode.

From Quiz "MasterChef Junior (US)" - Season 6

Answer: Asia

After winning a Blue Apron-sponsored Mystery Box Challenge, Sammy was granted the opportunity to choose pairs who would have to work together in this season's Tag Team Challenge, forcing duos to take turns working on an Asian street food platter, flipping every ten minutes for an hour. This season's platter included braised duck bao, shrimp potstickers and dipping sauce, pork siu mai, vegetable spring rolls, and satay. Although there were two bottom duos, the judges elected to save all of them this episode, creating a second Top 12 episode.

From Quiz "MasterChef Junior (US)" - Season 5

Answer: Six & 6

While the Top 10 waited on the balcony at the halfway point of the competition, the six previously-eliminated contestants returned to the MasterChef Kitchen for a shot at redemption. To prove their mettle, all six had to properly butcher a chicken into its respective parts in ten minutes. Jasmine won this and had the opportunity to choose the chicken pieces that she and her competitors would need to cook with in the proceeding challenge. Her selection of chicken oysters for herself secured her white apron while Gonzalo's chicken thighs helped him nab the other.

From Quiz "MasterChef Junior (US)" - Season 4

Answer: Addison

In Episode 8, the Top 10 contestants were told to take eggs, at random, from a basket to determine if they would jump onto the two-person Red Team or Blue Team for a challenge. This put Kya and Amaya together and Zac and Kamilly together for a test in which they had to make as many perfect devilled eggs as possible. Zac and Kamilly won this, beating out the other team and the surprise Yellow Team (consisting of Graham and Gordon) to secure immunity from the next Elimination Test (during which Kaitlyn and Corey were sent home).

From Quiz "MasterChef Junior (US)" - Season 2

Answer: Malibu

For having the best signature dishes in the previous round, Samuel and Abby became team leaders for the season's sole Field Challenge in which the children were driven to a winery in Malibu to serve diners at an outdoor pop-up restaurant. The six children, working in teams of three, had to craft two appetizers and two entrees, all quite technical, for VIP diners and critics while Gordon expedited. Abby, the youngest in the competition (at 8 years old) led her team to victory and propelled them to the semifinals while Samuel was spared for his leadership from the losing team. It sent Oona and Sean home.
