TV Classics: Characters and Actors Trivia Questions

1. Based on a character from O. Henry's 1907 short story, what TV western that ran from 1950-1956 was the first to be filmed in color?

From Quiz
Oh Pancho, Oh Cisco

Answer: "The Cisco Kid"

On September 17, 1949, an article in "Billboard" magazine announced that "The Cisco Kid", a long running film and radio series, would be brought to television and filmed in 16mm color. A total of 156 episodes were filmed.

2. Turn on your dial to the television show, "Gilligan's Island", Gilligan was played by Bob Denver. We know he was the right one, but which character is WRONG?

From Quiz Taking the Wrong Turn

Answer: Tina Louise played Mary Ann Summers

The cute Dawn Wells played the role of Mary Ann and Tina played the role of Ginger. Mary Ann was one of seven people stranded on the island, along with the Professor and Gilligan too. She also played in a couple of the return movies, "Rescue from Gilligan's Island" and "The Castaways on Gilligan's Island" in the 70s. The television series lasted from 1964 to 1967.

3. Somewhere on the planet Earth, twenty four hours a day, this television comedy is still playing in endless re-runs. It featured a ditsy redhead, a Cuban band leader, and two neighbors named Fred and Ethel. Please name it.

From Quiz Early Television Sitcoms--Ladies First

Answer: I Love Lucy

"I Love Lucy" ran from 1951 to 1957. It was followed by three specials featuring cast members. Lucille Ball went on to three other network sitcoms playing a character much like the original Lucy. These supplemented numerous guest reappearances on other variety and comedy shows.

4. "Mary Kay and Johnny" - What were their last names?

From Quiz TV Couples of Early TV 4

Answer: Stearns

OK, it was a very difficult question, now dry your eyes and read on! This series was important for three reasons. It was the first situation comedy shown on network TV in the USA (1947-1950). Mary Kay and Johnny Stearns were married in real life and they were shown together in bed, another first. Finally, it was the first TV program to show a pregnant woman. That's a lot of firsts for a show that hardly anybody remembers.

5. "I Love Lucy" - The neighbors that were regulars on the show were Fred Mertz and his wife. What was her name?

From Quiz TV Couples of Early TV 3

Answer: Ethel

Fred and Ethel Mertz were Lucy's next door neighbors and landlords. Not only was this the first show aired in front of a live audience, but the first to be shot on 35mm film. "I Love Lucy" was the most watched show on TV for 4 of its 6 seasons and went on to be syndicated.

6. "Gunsmoke" - Who was NOT a regular companion/sidekick of Matt Dillon?

From Quiz TV Couples of Early TV 2

Answer: Deputy Dog

This was the longest running prime time series of the 20th century, with a 20 year run from '55 to '75 and over 600 episodes. Miss Kitty owned the saloon, "Doc Adams" was the feisty doc, and Chester was portrayed as the stiff-legged deputy. Another regular was hill-billy accented Festus, a friend of Chester as well as a deputy to Marshall Dillon. Oh, I forgot, Deputy Dog was the correct answer and is now safely back with "Terrytoons".

7. "Adam-12" ran from November 1968 until August 1975. The two main characters were Officers Peter Joseph 'Pete' Malloy and James A. 'Jim' Reed. Who were the actors who played them?

From Quiz Who Played Who on Classic TV?

Answer: Martin Milner and Kent McCord

Martin Milner starred as Officer Joseph 'Pete' Malloy and Kent McCord played Officer James A. 'Jim' Reed. Milner, b.Dec.28,1931, began his career in 1947 at age 15 in the comedy "Life With Father". McCord, b.Sept.26,1942, as Kent Franklin McWhirter, had his credited showbiz beginning in the TV series "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet". In "Adam-12", the characters answered several dispatcher calls every show to the dispatcher call of "One Adam-12 One Adam-12". Set in the city of Los Angeles, the show recorded 174 episodes in total.

8. "M*A*S*H*" endured several character changes - and still managed to maintain (and even improve) quality. McLean Stevenson left and ended up starring in another sitcom, "Hello, Larry". What was true of the character, Larry?

From Quiz When Characters Depart A Series

Answer: Radio personality

Larry was a radio personality. The show didn't do well. Stevenson later said that he made a mistake: he thought that people loved him. They didn't - they loved Henry Blake. Larry Linville left; David Ogden Stiers (who did a fine job with a fuller, richer character)came on board. Mike Farrell did a nice job when he replaced Wayne Rogers as Hawkeye's buddy; Harry Morgan did a good job as the commanding oficer who replaced Stevenson.

From Quiz Oh Pancho, Oh Cisco

Answer: Clint Walker

In the title role of Cheyenne Bodie, Norman Eugene "Clint" Walker stood 6'6" tall with rugged good looks. He occasionally sang on the show and released an album of ballads and traditional songs.

19. "I Married Joan", starring radio and film comedienne Joan Davis, hit the airwaves a year after "I Love Lucy". The plot concerned a judge married to a wacky wife played by Davis. What well-known actor played her harried husband?

From Quiz Early Television Sitcoms--Ladies First

Answer: Jim Backus

"I Married Joan" ran three seasons (1952-1955) until it was overcome by declining ratings and health issues of the star. Davis was nominated for an Emmy as Best Female Comedy Star. Joan Davis died in 1961 of a heart attack. The plots often were situations that Joan got herself into that her tolerant husband tried to make right. Often he would reassure her that he loved her just as she was--a great housekeeper. Davis' daughter, Beverly Wills, played her sister on the program. Jim Backus is well known as a comic actor (the voice of Mr. Magoo and from "Gilligan's Island") but he had dramatic chops when called up on ("Rebel Without a Cause", 1955).

20. "Hey, Jeannie" - Who was the sister of cab driver Al Murray?

From Quiz TV Couples of Early TV 4

Answer: Liz

They ain't getting any easier. Jeannie was from Scotland and lived in NYC where she teamed up with the Murrays for 32 comedic episodes from 1956-1958. Jeannie was a waitress in a donut shop and boarded with her sponsors, Al and Liz. In the 2nd season she was a flight attendant and Al and Liz were replaced by Charlie O'Connell whose distinction was his dislike for pets.

From Quiz TV Couples of Early TV 3

Answer: Ruth

This popular sitcom ran from 1954 through 5 seasons. Hilda Crocker, Lily's close friend, aided Matt and Ruth Henshaw in finding her the right man. Another regular was next door neighbor Pete Porter (Harry Morgan of "M.A.S.H." fame) who kept complaining about his wife Gladys, who was never seen in any episode. Later, this couple spawned their own series, called, if you can believe it, "Pete & Gladys".

22. "Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet" - Now you certainly didn't expect one of them to be the couple! Ricky was their youngest son. Who was their oldest?

From Quiz TV Couples of Early TV 2

Answer: David

Running from 1952 to 1966, the series toward the end lost the '50s family values and even though Ozzie changed the format, it just didn't quite make it. Ricky (real first name Eric) went on to a singing career and when he appeared in public, he was booed if he tried to sing any of his recent songs but was loudly cheered for his golden oldies. David was an actor, producer and director.

23. "Cheers" also maintained quality while enduring cast changes. How was the departure of the Shelley Long character explained?

From Quiz When Characters Depart A Series
