Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Mary Kay and Johnny" - What were their last names?

Answer: Stearns

OK, it was a very difficult question, now dry your eyes and read on! This series was important for three reasons. It was the first situation comedy shown on network TV in the USA (1947-1950). Mary Kay and Johnny Stearns were married in real life and they were shown together in bed, another first. Finally, it was the first TV program to show a pregnant woman. That's a lot of firsts for a show that hardly anybody remembers.
2. "Hey, Jeannie" - Who was the sister of cab driver Al Murray?

Answer: Liz

They ain't getting any easier. Jeannie was from Scotland and lived in NYC where she teamed up with the Murrays for 32 comedic episodes from 1956-1958. Jeannie was a waitress in a donut shop and boarded with her sponsors, Al and Liz. In the 2nd season she was a flight attendant and Al and Liz were replaced by Charlie O'Connell whose distinction was his dislike for pets.
3. "Mr. Peepers" - What was his first name?

Answer: Robinson

Robinson J. Peepers (Wally Cox) mild and meek science teacher at Jefferson City JHS, was getting into one predicament after another. Tony Randall ("The Odd Couple"), Jack Warden (Emmy award for "Brian's Song") and Marion Lorne were also regulars. Miss Lorne, 2 time Emmy award winner was the absolutely lovable but absent-minded and confused English teacher Mrs. Gurney. Cox and Randall both won Emmys for their roles.

It played for 3 seasons from 1952-1955.
4. "I Married Joan" - Just who exactly married Joan Stevens?

Answer: Bradley

Judge Bradley Stevens was the lucky man and also the narrator of humorous "flashbacks" usually involving Joan (Joan Davis) and her younger sister, who was her real-life daughter. The show ran for 3 seasons from '52 to '55. If you loved "I Love Lucy" then you probably watched this series as well.
5. "Private Secretary" aka "Susie" - The character of Susie McNamara was the private secretary to what theatrical agent?

Answer: Peter Sands

Susie, played by Ann Sothern, was constantly involving herself in the romantic endeavors of her boss, Peter Sands. The show ran from 1953-1957 but Sothern walked out at the start of the fifth season and, with the rest of the cast, began "The Ann Sothern Show" which lasted from '58 to '61. She picked up 3 Emmys for her role as Susie.
6. "Meet Mr. McNutley" aka "The Ray Milland Show" - What was Professor McNutley"s first name and why don't you tell me his wife's as well?

Answer: Ray and Peggy

First, the name is varied depended on where you look; either it's McNutley or McNulty. Ray was the head of the English Dept. at a girl's college and Peggy, his wife. They were portrayed as your regular sitcom couples, muddling through different situations with comedic results. It ran for just 2 seasons from 1953-1955.
7. "The Real McCoys" - What was the name of the family grandpa patriarch?

Answer: Amos

Walter Brennan was Amos McCoy a kindly curmudgeon who just couldn't stand all those new-fangled gadgets. The family included grandson Luke, his bride Kate, brother Little Luke, and sister Hassie. Amos explained in the first episode that he forgot he already had a son named Luke therefore Little Luke.

This series was the precursor to "Beverly Hillbillies", "Andy Griffith" and others that combined country life and humor to somewhat urban settings, and ran from '57-'63.
8. "Beulah" - Beulah worked for the Hendersons. What were the names of the husband and wife?

Answer: Harry and Alice

Beulah, played by Ethel Waters for 2 seasons and Louise Beavers for 1 (1950-52), was the first weekly series with an African-American actress in the leading role. Hattie McDaniel (Oscar winner for "Gone with the Wind") played Beulah for a few episodes when Ms. Waters quit. On the radio (1947-52), Hattie was the first black woman to star in a network program.

Other stars who played in this series were Butterfly McQueen and Ruby Dandridge.
9. "Life With Father" - Father was Clarence Day Sr. Who was Mrs. Day?

Answer: Vinnie

Leon Ames played Clarence and Vinnie, his wife, was portrayed by Lurene Tuttle. As far as I can determine, they were only in one episode in season 2 of 3. The info on this show is very sketchy. One other notable during the series ('52-'55) Marion Ross from "Happy Days" was a guest star off and on.
10. "Stu Erwin Show" aka "The Trouble With Father" - Stu was the dad, who was his wife?

Answer: June

Stu's real life wife June Collyer played his wife on this sitcom that ran from 1950 to 1955. Along with their daughters Jackie and Joyce it completed the family. (I just threw in Jill because it started with "J"). This show featured a black actor, Willie Best, in a supporting role.

It also ran a full 26 minutes without a commercial (don't think we'll see those days again anytime soon). Martin Milner, "Route 66" and "Adam-12", was added in the penultimate season.
