Comedy Mixture - Tough Trivia Questions

1. What was the name of the family at the centre of the comedy show 'Bread'?

From Quiz
Good for a Giggle

Answer: Boswell

Set in Liverpool at the height of the Thatcher era, 'Bread' followed the ups and downs of the Boswell family and their efforts to work the DHSS system to their benefit. At the centre of this Catholic family was mother Nellie (always referred to as Mrs Boswell) who tried to keep her family together after the departure of their feckless father, Freddie, into the arms of "that tart", Lilo Lil. The family was made up of sons Joey, Jack, Adrian and Billy together with daughter, Aveline. Rounding out the clan was Grandad who lived next door. Written by Cara Lane, the show was aired by the BBC and ran from 1986 - 1991.

2. What was the premise for "Run, Buddy, Run"?

Herman Brooks was a young fact-checker employed at a publishing company who, like many men his age, encountered various problems from time to time. Decisions had to be made by his psyche, a group of characters played out in real time for the audience to see his thought processes. Genius showed his intellect, Wimp reveled his paranoia and anxiety, Angel represented his sensitivity while Animal was his "manly" side, full of lust and sexual energy. Hank Azaria and Yeardley Smith (both voice actors for "The Simpsons") were actors on "Herman's Head", which came to TV two years after "The Simpsons". Despite the title, Herman was nearly a side character while the character's playing his psyche usually were the show stealers. From Quiz Good for a Giggle

Answer: Norman Gunston / Gary McDonald

Emanating from a small role in 'The Aunty Jack Show', Norman Gunston (Gary McDonald) hosted a comedy show on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation which first aired in May 1975. It moved to the Seven Network for a series in 1978-79. The essence of the show was that it was a parody of 'Tonight' (or 'Variety') shows. The host, Gunston, was comically inept and the viewer regularly cringed at some of the questions asked during interviews. Many of the guests quickly caught on to the idea but others were left totally bemused. Norman's sparse hair was slicked down onto the scalp and his face contained little bits of cigarette paper designed to stop bleeding from shaving cuts. McDonald has reprised the Gunston character in several specials and other events over the following decades. 'Norman Gunston' is the only fictitious man to ever win the Gold Logie for the most popular male character on Australian television (1976). 'Mother and Son' followed the tribulations of two sons (one of whom was McDonald) dealing with the onset of dementia in their aging mother (brilliantly portrayed by Ruth Cracknell). It was a comedy that also highlighted this insidious condition.

18. In "Home Improvement", what was the name of the show hosted by Tim Taylor?

From Quiz Good For Some Laughs

Answer: Tool Time

"Tool Time" was the show-within-a-show that was hosted by Tim Taylor who had an assistant named Al Borland. As Tim explained in the premiere episode of "Tool Time", the show was about celebrating men and their tools. Each show would have a project that Tim and Al would work on, such as installing a home alarm system or performing car maintenance. Tim would usually be the accident-prone one of the show (usually because he wanted to use more power) and Al would explain the correct way of doing things. Tim would also use the show to discuss problems he had at home, usually fights he had with his wife, Jill. However, he would also use the time to apologize for any insensitive comments he made about her during the show.

19. What was the setting for "Harry's Girls"?

From Quiz Single Season Sixties Sit-Coms

Answer: Europe

They traveled around Europe to entertain because their act did not prove popular in the U.S. Harry had the ambitious job of fronting the act, booking, handling the finances and attempting to chaperone the girls, with predictable results. This series aired on NBC in the 1963-64 season.

20. The Australian sitcom "Kath & Kim" is set around the very suburban, dare I say bogan, lives of two foxy ladies from Fountain Lakes. Which famous Australian entertainer, known as the "Singing Budgie", made a guest appearance as Epponnee-Ray?

From Quiz Canned Laughter

Answer: Kylie Minogue

"Kath & Kim" is a parody of suburban life at the lower end of the social scale. Jane Turner played "Kath Day-Knight" and Gina Riley played "Kim Craig". The show debuted in Australia in May 2002. Kylie Minogue, who found early fame in Australia in the soap opera "Neighbours", made her guest appearance in the final episode of series three (four series were made). Kylie plays the role of Epponnee-Ray, Kim's daughter. Epponnee-Ray is back in Fountain Lakes for her wedding and the episode is a wonderful parody of her much more sentimental TV wedding on "Neighbours". "Kath & Kim" was remade for US audiences with Molly Shannon as "Kath Day-Knight" and Selma Blair as "Kim", but only lasted one series. (Question provided by cazza2902)
