The episode was positively received by many critics for shedding light on a much-ignored holiday in an entertaining way, that people of any religious denomination could enjoy. Although, the episode came under fire from the Anti-Defamation League for the portrayal of Boris and Minka (Tommy's grandparents), claiming they were similar to anti-Semitic illustrations in a 1930s Nazi newspaper. Nickelodeon's then-president, Albie Hecht (who was Jewish, himself), confessed confusion with the ADL's claims, calling them "absurd".
