1. Which television show was created and starred Tina Fey and a whispering Alec Baldwin about the making of a television show for a fictional New York City channel?

From Quiz
Television Shows About Television Shows

Answer: 30 Rock

"30 Rock" ran for seven seasons between October 2006 and January 2013. In all, 138 episodes were shown. The title of the show was a play on the address of the NBC studios at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, York City. At the centre of the action was production of a comedy sketch show "TGS with Tracy Jordan", with Tina Fey starring as the writer and director. "30 Rock" was a parody of relationships between the makers of television shows, their broadcasters and the commercial partners/advertisers of the network. Alec Baldwin starred as the executive she had to deal with daily. Baldwin's character was noted for whispering at key moments of conversation. The show won a number of Emmys and Golden Globes amid a host of nominations. But time was not on its side. By the end of the fifth season, Baldwin was ready to leave. He told "Rolling Stone" magazine he felt the show was in decline. Fey, too, was feeling the pressure the writing and performing were having on her family life.

2. Which television show draws upon our common experience of highly intelligent young men sadly devoid of human empathy by building a show around Sheldon?

From Quiz Glued to the Box

Answer: The Big Bang Theory

"The Big Bang Theory" was first televised by CBS in 2007 and since then it has glued audiences worldwide to the box! It's a sitcom created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady and focuses upon four geeks and a waitress living in Pasadena, California. The main character, Sheldon Cooper (played by Jim Parsons), is a senior theoretical physicist at Caltech who shares an apartment with Leonard Hofstadter (played by Johnny Galecki) who is also a Caltech physicist but has none of Sheldon's incredibly irritating personality quirks. The other geeks are aerospace engineer Howard Wolowitz (played by Simon Helberg) and astrophysicist Raj Koothrappali (played by Kunal Nayyar). Kaley Cuoco plays Penny the waitress who lives in the apartment across the hall. She's an aspiring actress from a small town in Nebraska, and is relied upon heavily by Sheldon for common sense instructions! That everyone knows someone like Sheldon creates a unique 'glue' for audiences worldwide. I've been watching Shelly for years!

3. This show is about a witch's marriage to a common man and her vows to become a typical housewife. What's the show's name?

5. "New York Times" columnist William Stevens once described J.R. Ewing as "the Iago of Texas oilmen." Which long-running TV series' third season finale left audiences wondering, "Who shot J.R.?"

From Quiz Left Hanging: TV's Greatest Cliffhangers

Answer: Dallas

A list of all-time greatest TV cliffhangers would be incomplete without mentioning "Dallas", starring Larry Hagman as J.R. Ewing! The third season's final episode, "A House Divided", is thought to have started television's trend of leaving the audience hanging at the end of a season. Fans of "Dallas" waited eight months for the resolution to the infamous question, which wasn't revealed until the fourth episode of the following season. "Dallas" tells the story of a wealthy oil tycoon of questionable moral fibre and the feuding that goes on within his family. It ran for 14 seasons, starting in 1978 and with the series' final episode airing on May 3, 1991. "Big Rich Texas", "Walker, Texas Ranger" and "Lone Star" are other TV series set in Texas.

From Quiz Television Shows About Television Shows

Answer: The Mary Tyler Moore Show

For seven seasons from 1970, Mary Tyler Moore starred as a producer of a TV news show based in Minneapolis. She was well supported by a cast that included Ed Asner, Valerie Harper, and Betty White. "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", sometimes the definite article was dropped in the title, has been described as "groundbreaking" in its portrayal of Tyler Moore as a woman keeping down a high pressure job in a men's world. One review said the show "..."took 20 years of pointless, insipid situation comedy and spun it on its heels ... pioneered reality comedy and the establishment of clearly defined and motivated secondary characters." ["Rome News-Tribune", July 1973.] As much as it was about news, the show was more about the relationships between co-workers and the highs, lows and in-betweens of their lives. Ed Asner was later to describe the cast as like a family.

16. A teenage dreamer spends the majority of his time in pursuit of true love, while his good buddy, a bongo playing wannabe beatnik, will do whatever it takes to avoid the evil four letter word, "Work?!". Can you please give me the title of this show?

From Quiz That Sounds Familiar

Answer: The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis

The character of Dobie Gillis was created in 1945 by American author and humorist Max Shulman and was featured in a collection of short stories entitled "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis", which was the basis for the series. Dwayne Hickman portrayed the title character, and Bob Denver played his good friend Maynard G. Krebs, a slacker whose main goal in life is to stay unemployed. During the first season of the show a couple of future stars appeared as semi-regulars. Tuesday Weld played Dobie's primary love interest Thalia Menninger and Warren Beatty portrayed Milton Armitage, a classmate of Dobies who is also vying for Thalia's affections. At a time when most teenagers on American TV shows were cast in supporting roles, "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" was one of the first series to feature them as leading characters. The show premiered in 1959 and lasted four seasons.

17. What's the name of the television show which normalises so many unusual family relationships that the once controversial blended family in "The Brady Bunch" looks tame?

From Quiz Glued to the Box

Answer: Modern Family

First televised by the American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) in 2009, "Modern Family" follows the lives of Jay Pritchett and his family in suburban Los Angeles. The series was created by Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan and is presented in a 'mockumentary' style (where the characters talk directly into the camera). Included in Jay Pritchett's family are his second wife Gloria (formerly Delgado, née Ramirez) - a Colombian half his age with a son from her previous marriage, Manny Delgado; their infant son Fulgencio (Joe) Pritchett; and his two adult children and their partners and children. Jay's daughter, Clair, has a fairly conventional marriage with three children; but his son, Mitchell, is the character that raises most laughs (and eyebrows) because he's homosexual, married to Cameron Tucker and they adopted a daughter, Lily Tucker-Pritchett, from Vietnam! The laughs (and perhaps shudders) you get from this show make you appreciate even more the relative 'normality' of your own family life; but as families are definitely becoming more complex this show deals very well with helping viewers accept what's happening around them.
