Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Following the death of his wife, a Civil War veteran moves to the town of North Fork, where he works his ranch, while also raising his young son as a single parent. If that's not hard enough, he is frequently called upon to help the elderly Marshal maintain law and order in the rough and tumble town. It's a good thing his trusty Winchester is always close by. What's the name of this show?

Answer: The Rifleman

"The Rifleman" starred Chuck Connors as Lucas McCain and Johnny Crawford as his son Mark. Shortly after arriving in North Fork, Lucas befriends the town's Marshal, Micah Torrance, an older gentleman who routinely seeks McCain's help when trouble arises.

It's at times like these that Lucas, aided by his modified rapid-fire Winchester rifle, will do whatever it takes to protect himself, his son and the town, even if that includes using deadly force. During its five season run, "The Rifleman" featured a number of up-and-coming stars who made guest appearances on the show, including James Coburn, Michael Landon and Dennis Hopper.

The series ran from 1958 to 1963.
2. A teenage dreamer spends the majority of his time in pursuit of true love, while his good buddy, a bongo playing wannabe beatnik, will do whatever it takes to avoid the evil four letter word, "Work?!". Can you please give me the title of this show?

Answer: The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis

The character of Dobie Gillis was created in 1945 by American author and humorist Max Shulman and was featured in a collection of short stories entitled "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis", which was the basis for the series. Dwayne Hickman portrayed the title character, and Bob Denver played his good friend Maynard G. Krebs, a slacker whose main goal in life is to stay unemployed. During the first season of the show a couple of future stars appeared as semi-regulars. Tuesday Weld played Dobie's primary love interest Thalia Menninger and Warren Beatty portrayed Milton Armitage, a classmate of Dobies who is also vying for Thalia's affections.

At a time when most teenagers on American TV shows were cast in supporting roles, "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" was one of the first series to feature them as leading characters.

The show premiered in 1959 and lasted four seasons.
3. Outside of their appearance, identical cousins Patty and Cathy Lane have nothing in common. Could you please name this show?

Answer: The Patty Duke Show

In the show, Cathy Lane moves from Scotland to live with her cousin Patty's family in New York City. Though identical in appearance, the girls' personalities are completely different, which provides the plot line for many of the shows' humorous situations.

The roles of Patty and Cathy were both played by the multi-talented Patty Duke. The show premiered in September of 1963, and ran for three seasons.
4. After being diagnosed with leukemia, attorney Paul Bryan is told he has at most 18 months to live, so he decides to experience as much of life as possible in the short time he has left. Do you remember this series?

Answer: Run for Your Life

The character of Paul Bryan was first introduced on April 15, 1965, in an episode of "Kraft Suspense Theatre" entitled "Rapture at Two-Forty", and starred Ben Gazzara as Bryan. The show was so well received that it was used as the pilot episode for a new series, with Gazzara continuing in the lead role. "Run for Your Life" premiered in September of 1965 and features Bryan traveling the world, meeting new people, and usually finding himself it some sort of precarious situation.

Although Bryan was only given 18 months to live, the show actually lasted for three seasons.
5. Three troubled youths are persuaded by the police to work undercover as an alternative to going to jail themselves. They were, without a doubt, the coolest cops on TV. Which show featured this hip trio?

Answer: The Mod Squad

"The Mod Squad" starred Michael Cole as Pete, Clarence Williams III as Linc and Peggy Lipton as Julie. The show was created by Bud Ruskin, and was loosely based on his experiences while working as a young undercover narcotics officer for the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department in the 1950s. Ruskin wrote a pilot script for the show in 1960, but it wasn't until eight years later that it was developed into a series. "The Mod Squad" premiered on September 24, 1968 and it proved very successful, especially among younger viewers.

The show was also a critical success, receiving six Emmy and four Golden Globe nominations during its five year run.
6. This former Chief of Detectives for the San Francisco Police Department is confined to a wheelchair after being paralyzed from the waist down by a snipers bullet. Now as a consultant for the S.F.P.D. he must rely on his brain, instead of his brawn, to help solve a variety of cases. What show am I describing?

Answer: Ironside

The character debuted on March 28, 1967, in a 90 minute TV movie entitled "A Man Called Ironside", which also served as the pilot episode for the series. Starring Raymond Burr as the title character Robert T. Ironside, the show premiered on NBC in September of 1967 and was a solid performer for the network, finishing in the top 30 of the Nielsen rankings six times during its eight season run. NBC attempted to resurrect the series in 2013 with Blair Underwood in the lead role, but it was a complete flop, airing only four of the nine episodes that were produced.
7. James and Florida Evans struggle to make ends meet while also raising three children in a poor neighborhood of inner-city Chicago. Even though money is tight, the close-knit family always seems to make the best out of their situation. What's the name of this "Dy-no-mite!" series?

Answer: Good Times

Florida Evans first appeared in 1972 as Maude Findlay's housekeeper in the very popular sitcom "Maude". The character became so popular that a spin-off was created revolving around the lives of Florida and her family and it premiered in February of 1974.

The show, which starred Esther Rolle as Florida and John Amos as her husband James, was originally intended to focus on serious issues in a lighthearted way. However, it was their oldest son J.J. (Jimmie Walker) and his antics, including the constant use of the expression "Dy-no-mite", that really appealed to audiences.

As a result of this, the episodes began to focus more and more on J.J. and less on the rest of the family, but the formula seemed to work. "Good Times" lasted six seasons, airing a total of 133 episodes.
8. A department store window dresser moves from Minneapolis, Minnesota to her hometown of New York City, where she is constantly bumping heads with her overbearing mother. The good news is, she finally meets and marries the man of her dreams. Please name this show?

Answer: Rhoda

"Rhoda" was created by James L. Brooks and Allan Burns, the same two gentlemen who gave us "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", where we were first introduced to the character of Rhoda Morgenstern. The show premiered in September of 1974 and starred Valerie Harper in the title role.

The cast also included Nancy Walker and Harold Gould as her parents Ida and Martin and Julie Kavner as her sister Brenda. In the pilot episode Rhoda takes a two week vacation to visit family and friends in New York, but after meeting and falling in love with Joe Gerard (David Groh), she decides to move there permanently. On October 28, 1974, Joe and Rhoda were married in a special one hour episode entitled "Rhoda's Wedding", which became the highest rated television episode of the 1970s, a record it held until 1977 when it was surpassed by the miniseries "Roots".

It was also the second most watched television episode in history, trailing only the birth of Little Ricky on "I Love Lucy" in 1953. Although the show was extremely popular during its first two seasons, the ratings began to slip and it was eventually canceled midway through its fifth season.
9. Major Greg "Pappy" Boyington commands a squadron of fighter pilots stationed in the Solomon Islands during World War II. Please give me the name of this series?

Answer: Baa Baa Black Sheep

"Baa Baa Black Sheep" is loosely based on the real life exploits of Pappy Boyington, commanding officer of the Marine Attack Squadron 214, better known as the Black Sheep. It starred Robert Conrad as Boyington, and also featured a young John Larroquette in his first TV role as a series regular.

In the show's first season (1976-77) the show was titled "Baa Baa Black Sheep", but that was changed to "Black Sheep Squadron" for its second and final season.
10. A white former professional basketball player takes the head coaching job at racially mixed Carver High School in South Central Los Angeles. What's the name of this show?

Answer: The White Shadow

"The White Shadow" starred Ken Howard as Ken Reeves, a former NBA player who was forced to retire after suffering a serious knee injury. After accepting the job, Reeves quickly realizes that coaching basketball might just be the least of his worries. The show is of course about basketball, but it also deals with a number of real-life issues facing the players and the students at Carver, such as gangs, drugs, racial hostility and financial hardship. "The White Shadow" premiered in November of 1978, and although it was popular with critics, it suffered from low ratings and was cancelled after three seasons.
