The Following Trivia

1. The episode opens with Megan who's still tied up in the basement. As Paul tells Jacob to kill her, what does he propose that they all have for breakfast?

Paul is, very creepily, mind you, stroking Megan's face and asking her if she slept all right while in the same breath telling the others that she needs to be killed and he'll make breakfast, asking if pancakes would be all right. Emma is clearly upset of not being in control of the situation and Jacob looks like his conscience is getting the better of him. Joey, luckily, doesn't know that Megan is tied up in the basement.

Bo is a tall, large, imposing black man who has a tattoo on his neck which is clearly visible to Joey. The kid is clearly scared of him and even Emma looks nervous to be around him, especially when she hears that he's not directly one of Joe Carroll's followers (which means that he's a freelance psychopath of sorts). The garage itself doesn't inspire much confidence in the guy either, as it's dirty, poorly lit, and has surprises lurking behind chained doors.

Joey wakes up to see Joe Carroll sitting on a chair in the corner of his room, watching him. Now, remember, Joe was incarcerated when Joey was just a baby so Joey has no memories of Joe other than the stories he's heard, all of which are probably not casting Joe in the most favourable light. Joe tries to connect with Joey, however, Joey remains mum. Joe is upset that Joey is giving him the silent treatment, but, he thinks that with time, Joey will open up to him.

Jordy Raines was the prison guard that allowed Joe Carroll to escape. He poses as a campus security officer and talks his way into the sorority house where the sister leads him up to Jessie's room. It's conveniently unoccupied at the time, but, Jordy has stashed a bag filled with murder implements just outside the window. He pulls it inside the room and tells the girl that he's been "planning this a long time"...

Charlie has been recruited by Joe Carroll at the 'recommendation' of a friend. He is an ex-army corporal in cyber-surveillance who was stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan but was discharged due to psychological issues. He's killed before, and he coldly recounts those murders to Carroll in their conversations in jail. Is nobody monitoring those?

Joey has already overheard Emma, Jacob and Paul plotting and notices inconsistencies in their stories. He knows where Paul took the cell phone from and, while his three captors are lounging in bed, he takes the cell phone and calls his mother. The FBI attempts to trace the call, and initially gets the location correct, but a virus scrambles the signal and threatens to throw the searchers off-track.

Aside from the dead body of Emma's mother and the creepy masks that they've found in what they dub as the cult 'clubhouse', Agent Parker mentions that they've found nine different sets of prints in the house. Emma's are obviously one of them, as are revealed characters Paul, Jacob, and Jordy Raines. One set belongs to our masked killer, but four sets of prints remain unidentified.

Nick Donovan was appointed by the FBI Director himself to run the investigation. The FBI was publicly embarrassed by Joe Carroll's second escape from jail in as many months and Donovan was sent to provide damage control and a bit of discipline to the team. However, the tall, black, imposing agent comes off as rather arrogant and full of himself, as well as being a self-proclaimed control freak. He wants every decision in the investigation to be run through him, and he clips Ryan Hardy's abilities a bit by making it known that he's just a consultant, not an agent. Donovan is played by Mike Colter, possibly best know thus far for his role on the television show "Ringer".

Agent Debra Parker was brought in because Agent Mason was sent back to Quantico, or so we are told (in fact, the actress, Jeananne Goossen, had only been signed on to play in the pilot episode). Agent Parker is quick-witted, not afraid to tell the truth and doesn't hold back when she thinks she's right, which is most of the time, anyway. Later in the episode we learn that she is part of the FBI's alternative religion unit and she specializes in cults specifically.

Charlie describes himself as "a follower" after Claire sees photos and videos of herself in Charlie's possession. He admits that he has been following her for about two years now, and he also has video of her while she's fast asleep in her bed. He admits that Emma (Denise) had no idea that he was even around and that there are parts of Carroll's plans that are hidden from other followers.

Joe Carroll meets with his lawyer, Olivia Warren, who is clearly terrified of him. Olivia is asked to do something, and she doesn't want to do it, but she'd much rather be the messenger than the alternative. Carroll inquires as to whether she still has contacts in the FBI and he wants an update on the situation outside his cell, as well as Olivia to deliver a statement to the press. Ryan Hardy doesn't want to let Olivia meet with Joe Carroll, but, as Agent Parker points out, that would be unconstitutional.

We meet Dr. Joe Carroll after he's escaped from death row. He used to be an English professor at Winslow University in Virginia before he became a serial killer, and he styles his murders after Edgar Allan Poe's works. In Poe's work, Carroll's opinion is that in death there is beauty and freedom, and he believes (maniacally) that he's actually following in the vein of literature. Carroll is an influential lecturer, and he manages to recruit several people to be his disciples. James Purefoy is a British actor, mainly known for his work on television.

Maggie is found in her house hiding in a closet. When Ryan Hardy opens that closet, the first thing that Maggie does is comes after Hardy with a knife. Not a good way of introducing yourself to a federal agent, or the consultant to a federal agency, anyway. Maggie claims that she was hiding because Rick frightens her and he still has a key, though they've been separated for quite some time already. Isn't it time she switched her locks?

Answer: Bathroom

Curious, curious Joey, going where you obviously are going to find things you don't want to see... Joey, after the long trip to get away from the farmhouse, wants to go to the bathroom, understandably. Bo tells him it's in the back and Joey goes there, however, opposite the bathroom there is a door with strange muffled sounds emanating from it. The door is chained, though not tightly enough so that a ten-year-old boy can't squeeze through. Joey goes in and finds the girl in the cage. Joey, shocked, returns to Emma (who he still calls Denise), and tells her about the girl. This enrages Bo and he starts yelling at Joey. Emma, ever the protector, steps in between the two, though I'm sure she also feared for her life.

Denise had abducted Joey, Joe Carroll and Claire Matthews' son, in the previous episode. She teams up with the 'gay' neighbours and they flee somewhere where the FBI wouldn't be able to trace them. Joey is still unaware of the alternate identities of the three and the fact that he's actually been kidnapped, but, he still has enough sense to ask to talk to his mom. The excuse that they're on an adventure, holds, but, for how long?

Ryan Hardy, who is now a hostage himself, is toying with Jacob, Paul and Emma. Jacob is scared of getting within two feet of Hardy because he's afraid that Hardy will break his neck. Ryan promotes this idea, even when Paul says that he'd shoot him, as Hardy says that Jacob would still have a broken neck. Hardy must have surmised that Paul has a soft spot for Jacob. Emma, enraged that the police are surrounding the farmhouse, Tasers Ryan and says that the Taser was Joe's idea and she knew that it would interfere with Hardy's pacemaker. Hardy, now groaning and barely moving, is tied up by Jacob.

The quote from "The Masque of the Red Death" is actually a message to Joe Carroll's followers to do something. We see a new character watch the press conference on television and immediately pick up his phone to call another new character. The press, however, is oblivious and just eats up the story as though it's going to sell them headlines.

Answer: Arkansas

Maggie Schuller was wanted in Arkansas for six murders that were all tied to her, but, since Maggie was never caught, none of the murders were ever solved. Maggie was also seen going into the jail to visit Joe Carroll, but, obviously, under an assumed name (just like the rest of Joe's followers - something the FBI should have picked up on long ago). Joe Carroll obviously was impressed with her, so, why are the FBI so surprised that he recruited her?

Ryan Hardy wants to tag along with the convoy himself, however, his request is denied. Joe Carroll's transfer is approved mostly due to the fact that Hardy broke some of Joe's fingers and this apparently constituted a violation of his eighth amendment rights, the one that prohibits cruel and unusual punishments by the federal government, particularly, torture.

As Emma and Joe Carroll are standing outside the cult headquarters, a police jeep pulls up to the house, light flashing, bells, whistles, the whole shebang. Carroll looks worried for a second, but, out of the car steps a familiar face to him, his friend Roderick. Roderick, once a student of Carroll's, is now the sheriff of a small town, a position that carries with it some responsibility, like the ability to decide what kind of side he wants with his meal. Roderick goes with the potato salad.

Joe Carroll's book, while not a mainstream success, did get him a few fans (and some, apparently, not the kind you generally want to meet alone in a dark alley). Emma meets Joe at his book reading and he becomes interested in her, even with Emma's mother flirting with Carroll. He signs Emma's copy of the book "hopefully yours, Joe".

Parker tries to mess with Emma's psyche and points out that all of the murals back in Emma's old house resemble Emma's mother. Parker asks Emma how much she really misses her mother, and Emma, enraged once again, says that she killed her mother to break free. Parker further angers Emma by saying that instead of following her mother's orders, now Emma follows Joe Carroll's orders, but Emma counters by saying that it's her choice to follow Carroll, while she was given no choice about who her parents were.

Paul states that they ought to give Roderick a call and Emma responds that she's already made that call, and she's left him a message. Roderick is probably coordinating things, but, as of yet, we haven't seen him do anything interesting. Emma, at this time, tells the other two that she has smoothed things over with Joey and that Joey couldn't have revealed where they are because he doesn't really know anything more that it's a white farmhouse with black shutters.

Joey is taken from inside his own home while he's sleeping and is handed over to the two men who also abducted Sarah Fuller, Carroll's last victim. Joey, however, is Carroll's only progeny and we expect him to be safe from his father's murderous plans, though I'm sure that there is something else in store for him. This is Kyle Catlett's first recurring role, but, as a child actor, he probably will have more roles offered to him if he does a good job on this show.

Emma creeps me out, honestly, there's no emotion behind her eyes and that's a scary thing. Paul goes to talk to Emma to try and smooth things over with her. Jacob and Emma have a relationship and Paul is probably feeling a little left out of the deal because Emma is being nothing but antagonizing towards him. Jacob, blinded by love or lust, obviously has no clue, or pretends he doesn't, but Paul, who is clearly actually in love with Jacob wants to make things right. Emma's response to the talk is to slice open Paul's forearm with a carving knife that she has in her hand.

Joey knows that girls should not be locked up in cages and while Emma and Bo are discussing their connection to Joe Carroll, Joey steals the keys and runs off to help the girl out. Bo, however, notices that the keys are gone and so is Joey, and he runs after him. Joey manages to release Dana, however, he opts not to run until faced with Bo. Joey runs out into the garage and between some cars with Bo hotly in pursuit. Joey is small, so he figures that his best bet is to squeeze under a car. Nevertheless, Bo finds him and drags him out by his feet.

Not only was Joe Carroll Roderick's teacher in university, but Carroll also taught Roderick to murder and to do it with style, Joe's style. Roderick must have committed two of the campus murders on his own, but when Carroll was caught, he took the fall for them knowing full well that Roderick had committed them. Indeed, Carroll probably supervised. Roderick felt that he owed Carroll and set up the cult's manse for them, and he still feels that he owes Carroll.

Ryan Hardy enters Emma's house, illegally, mind you, despite Agent Mike Weston's protests. Inside he finds a room reeking of cult mentality, a word the FBI has been avoiding up to this point. On a shelf in that room there are several masks of Edgar Allan Poe on a shelf, however, the last mask actually has a body attached to it as well. The person, a male, attacks Hardy and tells him "you're not supposed to be here".

However, in one of her flashbacks, Parker remembers that when she became 'of age', the cult leader, Dale, had her alone in a room and started to make sexual advances on her. Because she was young, inexperienced and terrified, Parker didn't give in to the cult leader and this caused her to leave the cult and her family.

When Emma goes up to get Joey for a meal, she discovers that he's not in his room. The three of them tear off in different directions to look for him. In the meantime, Joey has run off blindly into the woods, and he falls down having tripped over a tree root or something... ...only to be found by the neighbours, an elderly couple called Clark and Nora Sullivan. Nora recognizes Joey from television ("Hey, aren't you Joey Matthews?") and they realize that the situation is highly suspicious.
