Somehow the Infected pursuing Anna is able to track her to a room that she is hiding out in. The Infected and Anna fight each other and Anna is eventually able to stab the Infected in the head but she is bit in the process. Once Anna regains her senses from fighting off the Infected, she realizes that she has given birth. Anna knows that she has been bit and cuts off the umbilical cord attached to her baby. Shortly after, Marlene and a few men arrive and Anna lies to them saying that she cut off the umbilical cord before she was bit. Anna tells Marlene the baby's name is 'Ellie' and at Anna's request, Marlene ends Anna's life before the Cordyceps infection can take over. The actress that plays the part of Anna in the season one finale, Ashley Johnson, had previously provided the voice and motion capture of Ellie in the video games "The Last of Us" (2013) and "The Last of Us Part II" (2020).

The Walkman was manufactured by Sony and first released in Japan in 1979. The device was revolutionary in that it allowed people to play cassette tapes on a portable device. In 2011 the Walkman was modified to only play digitally downloaded music rather than physical media.

The man mentions that they prefer to be off the grid and after he shows them their location, he tells Joel and Ellie to not cross a certain river.

Henry and Sam communicate via sign language and are hiding in the upper floor of an abandoned building.

Joel finds a can of Chef Boyardee and the word game Boggle. Ellie loves word games so she happily takes Boggle from Joel and puts it in her backpack. Boggle was introduced in the 1970s and it is played by creating words of at least three letters in length. Players form words by using letters on adjacent cubes and the scoring system grants more points for longer words with words of 8+ letters scoring 11 points.

Although Joel is severely injured, Ellie takes his rifle to go hunting for food in the frigid weather. Ellie first finds a white rabbit but she makes noise and it escapes. Next, Ellie spots a large deer in the distance and is able to shoot it before it detects her. However, Ellie did not hit the deer in the right spot and it is able to run away. The next time we see the deer, David and James are over it contemplating whether or not they should take it back to their camp.

Captain Kwong tells Ellie that he is done lecturing her about her behavior. Ellie expects to be put in the 'hole' where students that break a major rule like fighting are placed as punishment. Ellie wants to know what is so great about being an officer and Kwong tells her that officers keep everyone from killing each other.

Unfortunately, Dr. Edelstein is captured by the insurgents in power and is tortured and eventually shot by Kathleen.

In "The Last of Us" video game from 2013 upon which season one of "The Last of Us" is based, Ellie reads Joel puns from the same "No Pun Intended Volume Too" book by Will Livingston. In the first joke of the episode, a mermaid wears an algae bra to math class. At first Joel groans at the jokes but eventually him and Ellie laugh at how silly they are.

After Ellie stashes the tampons, she notices that there is an infected trapped under rubble. She closely inspects the infected and then takes out her knife and stabs it in the head. The other infected that she had seen before were taken out by Joel and they were not trapped so this was the first time that Ellie is seen up close to an infected but not in danger.

The outbreak of the Cordyceps fungal infection started at a grain factory in which a non-violent employee started biting people. This infected person got out of the grain factory and had not been caught by law enforcement. Three of the people that were bit had been taken in by police and killed when the infection took over. However, 14 other people were unaccounted for and presumed to be infected. A government official pleads with Ibu Ratna to develop a vaccine for the Cordyceps that was present on the dead body that she viewed. Ratna tells him that she has worked with fungi for decades and there is no medicine or vaccine for it. Her recommendation is that the city of Jakarta and everyone in it be bombed to stop the spread.

Sarah is certainly more excited for her father's birthday than he is. She wants to make Joel pancakes but when she checks their cupboard she discovers they are out of pancake mix. Instead, Sarah gives him scrambled eggs and orange juice for breakfast before he goes to work. As they part ways, Joel tells Sarah he'll be home by 9:00 so they can celebrate more. As will be discovered later on, the decision to not eat foods with flour was critical for Joel's survival.

In the video game of the same name that inspired the tv series, Ellie plays the guitar at several times in some nice change of pace scenes.

Once Ellie gets the medicine she runs off to go back to Joel rather than claim half of the deer.

Riley thinks it would be funny to cover Ellie's mouth while she is sleeping but Ellie gets startled and nearly stabs her. After Joel says that he would be a sheep rancher if he could do what he wanted, Ellie says that she dreams of going into space. In the quarantine zone, Ellie read lots of books about space and her favorite astronaut is Sally Ride. Interestingly, Joel actually guesses correctly that Sally Ride is Ellie's favorite astronaut. Sally Ride was born in Los Angeles in 1951. She became a member of NASA in 1978 and in 1983 she became the first American woman and youngest American (32) to fly in space. Ride spent more than 300 hours in space and after her time in NASA she worked as a physicist and professor. In 2012, Sally Ride died from pancreatic cancer.

Kathleen's brother, Michael, was the leader of the Kansas City insurgency prior to the overthrow of FEDRA. In order to get leukemia medicine for his brother Sam, Henry sells out Michael to FEDRA and Michael ends up dying. The last time Kathleen sees Michael he tells her to forgive Henry because they would have done the same thing to save a family member. Kathleen is not so forgiving and she makes it her mission to get Henry in spite of her peers telling her to stop.

Joel tells Ellie that most people wanted to be rescued and evacuated by the soldiers. However, if there wasn't enough room or the person was weak oftentimes they were killed instead of being brought to the QZ. Bill on the other hand did not want to be taken away by the military so he hid down in his basement when the soldiers were evacuating people. Bill had seemingly been preparing for an apocalyptic event as he had a stash of necessary supplies down in his basement. After the military went through his town, Bill ransacked local stores to get gas, wine and supplies to make traps.

For most people that get bitten by an infected, their body totally breaks down within twenty-four hours. However, Ellie is unique in that her body did not get overtaken by the fungal infection even after being bitten three weeks ago. To monitor her infection, the leader of the Fireflies in Boston, Marlene, had Ellie count to ten and hold her arm out steady. Presumably, those that are developing a fungal infection after being bitten cannot count or hold their arm steady.

Answer: Watch

Sarah goes through Joel's drawer and finds cash and a knife in there. She takes $20 and after school goes to Lone Star Watch & Jewelry. While there the owner replaces the spring in Joel's watch. Twenty years later, Ellie would comment to Joel that the watch that Sarah had fixed for him in 2003 wasn't working.

Similar to "The Last of Us" (2013) video game, Ellie and Joel see and feed a majestic giraffe in the season finale. Ellie is amazed at how gentle and tall the giraffe is. Ellie feeds the giraffe with leaves from a tree and is sad when the giraffe walks away. Ellie and Joel end up getting a great view of a tower of about 10 giraffes from their overlook.

Joel tells Ellie that shooting is the easy part and dressing is the difficult part. Ellie asks him what dressing is and in classic and terse Joel fashion he tells her "taking out an animal's guts". Dressing an animal by removing its organs helps cool down the animal's body which helps prevent its meat from spoiling.
