Answer: Deer

Although Joel is severely injured, Ellie takes his rifle to go hunting for food in the frigid weather. Ellie first finds a white rabbit but she makes noise and it escapes. Next, Ellie spots a large deer in the distance and is able to shoot it before it detects her.

However, Ellie did not hit the deer in the right spot and it is able to run away. The next time we see the deer, David and James are over it contemplating whether or not they should take it back to their camp.

We learn in episode eight that this man was named Alec and he had a daughter who is mourning his loss. David tells Ellie that Alec and some other men were just looking for food but in actuality these men attacked Joel without being provoked.

After she escapes the burning room, she finds Joel outside and the two embrace.
