Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Greetings programmes! I am Ankhsunamun1. My favourite animal is approximately 100 ft long, weighs approximately 200 tons, lives in several oceans of the planet and its singing can be heard for miles, yet it eats some of the smallest creatures to be found. What is it?

Answer: Blue whale

I love this creature. They are fascinating and yet, so little is known about them. For their size, they are the biggest animal to ever have lived. They are extremely difficult to study and have been spotted from the southern oceans, right up as far north as the Arctic. The blue whale song has been recorded at 188 decibels. A jet engine is only 140 decibels.
2. I'm kimbwitchn from the USA, and my favorite wild animal is native to Africa. Its Latin name is Suricata suricatta and it is a member of the mongoose family. It lives in colonies and is often photographed standing upright having a look around. What animal is it?

Answer: Meerkat

Meerkats post sentries to watch for danger. They have many different calls to communicate with one another. The meerkat is immune to some types of venom, notably scorpion venom. Meerkats have strong claws for digging and can shift their weight in dirt in a VERY short time.

They can close their ears to prevent dirt from getting into the ear canal. There is a colony of meerkats at the zoo not far from where I live and I can watch them for hours!
3. Hi, ElusiveDream here! This animal is native to Bangladesh, India, Bhutan and Nepal. Its fur comes in a variety of colours but always has the distinctive black stripes. What is it?

Answer: Bengal tiger

The Bengal tiger is the most common of the three tiger sub-species and is listed as being endangered. The average weight for a male is roughly 221kgs while females weight around 140kgs. The most common fur colour for wild tigers is 'gold' but in captivity they also come in 'tabby' and 'white'.
4. Hello all- this is Sparrow1138 My favorite animal is a large mammal that lives in the very far Northern hemisphere that has a very distinct body part harvested for display. This part is often claimed to be part of a mythical creature and, surprisingly, people who do not know about this creature actually believe it! There is a Youtube video popular with kids that features a song about this creature. What is it?

Answer: Narwhal

The narwhal is a medium sized Arctic whale species. Its tusk is like a unicorns horn but it is actually a large tooth. The tusk on the male narwhals can grow from 4 ft to nearly 10 ft in length. They are sometimes called the unicorns of the oceans.
5. Hey hey, FrizzoLizzo here! My favourite animal is a reptile that is only found in the southern tropical regions of Africa. Belonging to the genus Atheris, these creatures have a body length ranging from 40-78 cm long, and primarily make their home in the high trees of the rainforest. What animal am I describing?

Answer: Bush viper

The bush vipers of the southern regions of Africa are my favourite animals on Earth! Some species come in a wide spectrum of colours, and their flat foreheads and big eyes make them strangely cute too!
6. ElusiveDream here again! This reptile, the largest of its species, is found in various parts of South America including Brazil, Ecuador and Peru. It can reach a length of almost seven metres and a weight of 70kgs. What is it?

Answer: Green anaconda

The green anaconda is one of the world's largest snakes. It spends most of its life in slow-moving rivers or streams where it feeds on a variety of birds, mammals, fish and other reptiles. They kill by wrapping themselves around their prey and squeezing hard. Eventually the prey either dies from cardiac arrest or lack of oxygen.
7. Hello again, Ankhsunamun1 here. Another of my favourite animals is a type of big cat that is elusive and beautiful. It is on the 'Red List of Threatened Species'. It lives in Central and South Asia in alpine and subalpine zones, and am sometimes called an ounce! What is it known as?

Answer: Snow leopard

This is, to me, one of the most beautiful of the big cats. I have only seen it on TV with Sir David Attenborough, where his team managed to catch a mother and cub, high in the mountains. Suddenly, the mother went on a hunt. It was a spectacular sight, as she hurtled down a steep cliff face after a goat.

It managed to escape by jumping into the river at the bottom of the gorge. Everything should be done to save it!
8. Hello this is Cindy and my favorite animal has a name meaning "fast walker". It is the tallest land animal on earth. "Necking" for these animals is to show who is top male. What is this beautiful animal?

Answer: Giraffe

Giraffes became my favorite animal after feeding and spending some time with them. They are elegant, gentle, and peaceful animals... and I can't wait to spend some more time with them!
9. This is kutztribe. I live in the pacific northwest of the USA. We have a lot of these black and white marine mammals in the waters near my home. These mammals are found all around the world. What are they?

Answer: Orcas

There is a lot of controversy in my country concerning the use of these great creatures in marine animal parks.
10. Hi! Kimbwitchn from North Carolina USA here, unable to resist adding a question about another of my favourite wild creatures. This herbivore is native to Eastern and Southern Africa. It stands 12-16 inches at the shoulder and weighs 7-16 pounds. It usually lives in pairs and roams a territory of about 12 acres. Its genus is Madoqua. What animal is it?

Answer: Dik dik

The dik dik is an even-toed ungulate that chews its cud as part of the digestive process. There are four species of dik dik in the genus Madoqua. Males have short horns, about three inches long. They are such pretty little animals!
