Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Possibly the world's smartest animal, other than man, the chimp is most likely to be found sleeping in which of the following places?

Answer: Up a tree

Chimpanzee spend an equal amount of time on land and in the trees, but when sleeping they can almost always be found in a tree. Most chimps live in savannahs, wet grasslands, or tropical forest regions. They live in groups that can number over 100 members. Chimps are omnivores, and the majority of their diet is fruit. Chimpanzees have been seen to hunt animals as big as an antelope when they desire meat.

It is not a good idea to keep a chimp as a pet. They can view a human as a rival and are stronger and much more vicious than most people.
2. Sometimes referred to as a desert lynx or Persian lynx, what is the proper name for this lovely, tufted-eared cat?

Answer: Caracal

The caracal is a beautiful medium-sized wild cat found in Africa and Mediterranean regions of Asia. It has a beautiful fawn-colored coat and long black ear-tufts. They are known for their acrobatic skills when catching birds in flight. Their usual prey are small antelope, rabbits, rodents and birds.

They are usually solitary in nature and can have litters as large as six kittens each. In the past, their skills are bird hunting led to them being kept as pets and trained to assist the hunter in catching birds for food.
3. What has led to the decline in the population of wild chinchilla?

Answer: They were killed for their fur.

The chinchilla is well known for its exquisitely soft fur. Over 90% of the wild population was wiped out during the 20th century. Chinchillas are now farmed extensively, even though they are very rarely found in the wild. These are a small rodent and it takes well over 100 of these animals just to make a short jacket. Chinchilla use their long ears to release heat and in the wild, they prefer elevations above 5,000 feet. Chinchillas are indigenous to the Andes mountains of South America and are usually found living in rock crevices or in burrows.
4. Which one of these things would a camel be unlikely to eat?

Answer: Fish

Camels, especially Bactrian camels, will eat almost anything. This includes non-food items such as clothing. It is this ability to eat almost any vegetation that allows them to survive in the harshest of terrain. The only reason they are unlikely to eat fish, is that that they are not likely to run into fish in the desert.

They will eat dead carcasses when vegetation is not available, are known to eat salt-water slush, and will eat snow to get needed water. These are versatile and adaptable animals that have provided mankind with transportation in areas that most other animals are unable to adapt to.
5. Which of the following best describes the daily social life of a capybara?

Answer: Very social and live in large groups.

The capybara, the world's largest rodent, is indigenous to most of South America. They do avoid the higher elevations of the Andes mountains. Capybara live in large groups of between 20-30. Some groups have been found that number in the hundreds. They love fruit, tree bark, and plain old grass. Like all rodents, their teeth grow continuously but are worn down by their coarse diet which includes tree bark.
6. The speedy cheetah only needs to eat 5-10 pounds of meat a week.

Answer: False

The cheetah needs a minimum of ten pounds of meat a day. They expend massive amounts of energy when hunting and often lose their kill to lions, leopards, and hyenas because of their exhaustion after hunting. The often attempt to get their prey up into a tree for safekeeping, as they are one of the few wild cats who regularly climb trees.

They are one of the most inbred of all cat species which leaves them vulnerable to disease and genetic abnormalities.
7. This unusual looking animal is a civet and has been hunted for centuries for use in which of the following reasons?

Answer: To get its musk to make perfume.

The civet has been hunted for centuries in order to obtain its musk, for use in making perfume. This nocturnal predator is very adaptable and will eat small birds, rabbits, snakes and frogs. It will also eat fruits and berries that have already fallen on the ground.

Other than humans, their greatest enemy are the large wild cats in the area. Civets are solitary animals that come together only to mate. Babies are kept in underground burrows until they are weaned. Civets are found in southern Asia and in Africa. Even though they are often cat civet cats, they are not felines, but are more closely related to the mongoose.
8. The chamois is a small camelid that is only found in the frigid Kamchatka Peninsula of far eastern Russia.

Answer: False

This is false. The chamois is an unusual mountain goat that has a lot of antelope-like features. These shy animals are found in the mountainous regions of Europe and they are adapted to the snow. They can climb up and down rocky mountainsides with ease. Female chamois live in herds with their children and usually give birth to a single kid. Males lead a solitary existence only coming together to fight each other during mating season. Chamois leather is known for its extremely soft texture and the fact that it does not scratch.
9. Coyotes can be found in forty-nine of the fifty US states.

Answer: True

The intelligent coyote can survive in most terrains and is very versatile. It has extended its range to all the mainland states, including Alaska. While European settlers managed to hunt many of North America's large carnivores to near extinction, the coyote has managed to survive, and in many locations, actually thrive. Genetic studies of coyotes in the north western areas of North America show that they may have started breeding with wolves.

The only state with no coyotes, at the time of writing, is Hawaii, protected by its island status. Coyotes are so clever it's entirely possible that they are plotting how to stowaway.
10. The magnificent caribou is sometimes called by which of these other names?

Answer: Reindeer

Often seen migrating in huge herds, the caribou is one of the vitally important animals in the very northern areas of Europe, Asia, and North America. In the summer, they feast on the abundant grasses found in the Arctic tundra, and then migrate further south as winter sets in. Caribou, often called reindeer, are the only member of the deer family in which the females also have antlers.
