Malshis are also known as Malti-tzu, Mal-Tzu or Shih-tese, Malshis are crosses between purebred Maltese and purebred Shih Tzu, and are known as F1 (first generation) hybrids, although they don't necessary have to inherit 50% Maltese and 50% Shih Tzu genes. One parent may have a greater influence over the other, hence the variation in looks and personalities.

Malshis are a relatively new breed that originated in the 1990s. Most sources quote they originated in Australia although a few quote North America. However, their parents are among some of the oldest known breeds in the world. The Maltese originated some 2,800 years ago in the small island country of Malta, while the Shih Tzu originated in Tibet and has been officially documented for at least 1,000 years.

Malshis were bred as companion dogs that could be tolerated by people with dog allergies because they are low shedding and hypoallergenic. They were also bred as an alternative to the longstanding "poodle mix", which are also hypoallergenic. Malshis are not recommended for very young kids due to their small size.

Velcro dogs have an extremely strong attachment to their owner(s). A velcro dog basically follows their owner(s) everywhere and will not let them out of their sight. They want to be constantly beside the owner(s), and will get up and move with them even when they are sleeping.

Velcro dogs are also known as "shadow dogs".

Other causes of tear stains include ingrown eye lashes and shallow eye sockets. It can also be caused by allergies and poor food diet. However the actual culprit is the chemical porphyrin, excreted through tears in dogs. The tears spill over onto their faces which will stain light-coloured fur pink, red or brown.

Although staining causes dogs no discomfort, it is unsightly cosmetically and therefore requires daily management.

Malshis are very devoted to their owner(s) and are always around their feet. They are excellent family dogs, but can also make very good therapy dogs thanks to their naturally affectionate nature. Playful and outgoing, they love to make friends with anyone they comes across, humans, dogs, or other non-canine animals alike.

Although they love to romp and play, Malshis can live in an apartment happily as long as they get around 15 minutes of exercise per day. Short walks or playing fetch will easily satisfy their exercise needs.

The most basic command of "sit" helps puppy to learn to stay calm and listen.

"Down" can keep puppy from jumping on people or putting her face on the dinner table.

"Stay" will help puppy learn self control. It can also be helpful in a number of situations such as you need puppy to be out of the way or when you don't want your too friendly puppy overwhelming your guests.

"Come" is a necessary command especially if puppy slips out of her leash or if she is off leash in a dangerous situation and needs to answer to immediate recall.

"Heel" means puppy walks at your side without tugging at the leash, especially when there are distractions or strangers passing by.

By learning these basic commands, puppy could be protected from many potentially dangerous situations. Many more advanced training and tricks are also built upon these basic commands.

Not that it mattered to us at all, but Malshis are still not recognized by the American Kennel Club. The AKC considered the Malshi to be a hybrid breed, and therefore it is not afforded pedigree status.
