Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Starting with the word MAID, change one letter and come up with the past tense of a verb.

Answer: Said

This is a so ubiquitous word the hint should be very vague. The word "said" is of course the past tense of the verb "to say", but some may also remember that it is part of the name of a music band. Indeed: Right Said Fred is a British band founded in 1990 by the brothers Fairbrass (Fred and Richard).
Said is also an Arabic given name (sometimes also used as a surname), translated as "happy".
2. Take the answer to the previous question, change one letter and give me a blessing verb.

Answer: Sain

To sain is a verb that is a bit obsolete. It means to make the sign of the cross, either as a blessing (hence the hint) or in order to protect one against evil. Although the word is obsolete, the act is not: I've seen several soccer players sain before coming into play.
But Sain can also refer to a few places in Iran (for instance the village Sain in the province Ardabil).
There are also some people with the surname Sain, among others the French painter Paul Sain (1853-1908) and the Pakistani drummer (dhol player) Pappu Sain (born 1962, although sources are not unanimous).
3. Take the answer to the previous question, change one letter and give me another verb. Ouch, my head is turning.

Answer: Spin

"You make my head spin" is a compliment frequently heard after a remarkable feat. Spinning is indeed turning at a dizzying rate. But that's only one of the many definitions of the verb "to spin".
The basic meaning of the verb "to spin" can also be "to produce a fibre thread" (such as spiders do) or "to fish".
And there's many other uses too. The whirling sensation described by the word "spin" has inspired several music bands, dancers and singers (for instance the Maltese band Spin or Kylie Minogue's song "Spinning Around"). Athletes have perfected various spins in sports such as cricket or figure skating. And various branches of sciences describe some sort of spin: it is one of the properties of subatomic particles, it is a term used in Einstein's relativity theories and in quantum mechanics, and it is used in chemistry as the creating of polymer fibres.
4. Take the answer to the previous question, change one letter and give me once more a verb. The image is not as vulgar as it sounds.

Answer: Spit

The verb "to spit" is basically defined as the removal of excessive mucus and fluid from the respiratory tract. Spitting may be hazardous for the health of the surrounding people, for the expectorated fluid and/or mucus most often contains germs of contagious diseases. That's also the reason for the negative connotation of spitting, as a sign of contempt for the person at whom the act is directed.
The noun "spit" can also mean a long pointy stick on which food is fried: meat, fish, prawns, vegetables, fruit, candy... A barbecue party may use different small spits to serve to the guests.
The idiom "spitting images" is used for a group of people who resemble each other so much they could be one's stand-in. "Spitting Image" was also the title of a British puppet show in which the news of the day was spoofed. The series ran from 1984 until 1996.
5. Take the answer to the previous question, change one letter and give me a noun. In clothing, it is usually plural.

Answer: Spat

Spats are clothing accessories worn over shoes, covering the ankle and the top of the shoe. They were frequently used up to the 1920s to protect against mud and dirt (and horse manure) lying on the streets.
In the Twenty-First Century, the use of spats is limited to certain industries, especially those with very hot liquids being manipulated (for instance glass blowing, iron puddling, etc.). In these few cases fireproof spats may protect the wearer against severe burns when he accidentally spills some material.
An entirely different meaning of the word spat is an acronym for the Polish special forces with the police: Samodzielny Pododdzial Antyterrorystyczny Komisariatu Policji. Now even who doesn't speak any Polish, will certainly have grasped the meaning of the last three words. "Samodzielny" means independent, and "pododdzial" Is translated as a "subdivision". So the full name of the Polish SPAT translates to "independent subdivision of the anti-terrorist police commissariat".
6. Take the answer to the previous question, change one letter and come up with another noun. Is it too hot or are you comfortable?

Answer: Seat

The word "seat" means any type of furniture on which one can sit down. Etymology of the English "seat" is traced to old Norse, but the Latin word "sedes" for seat is obviously related too.
The "hot seat" I hinted at is an expression indicating highly stressful situations, but also American slang for the electric chair.
There is also one totally different use of the word SEAT: written in all capitals, it is also the brand name of a car manufacturer. It was founded as the Spanish company Sociedad Espanola de Automoviles de Turismo, and since 1986 it is incorporated in the Volkswagen group.
7. Take the answer to the previous question, change one letter and give me an animal.

Answer: Seal

Seals are marine mammals with fin-formed feet. These carnivores live mostly in the colder shore regions (Arctic and Antarctic). Thirty-odd species of seals still exist, including the walrus, the Californian sea lion, the Antarctic fur seal, the leopard seal and the Baikal seal.
A seal can also be a sign of guaranteeing the content. In this meaning, you could receive an envelope "sealed with a kiss" by your beloved one.
The American navy has special forces indicated as SEALS, who (according to popular movies and television broadcasts) can be recognised by a tattoo in the shape of the aforesaid mammals.
8. Take the answer to the previous question, change one letter and come up with a type of ore.

Answer: Sial

Those of you who are familiar with chemistry, will certainly recognise SiAl (with capital S and capital A) as the combination of silicon and aluminium. The upper layers of the earth crust, especially in the continental territories, contain comparatively more silicates and aluminium alloys than other rocks. That's why this upper crust is named the SiAl layer, as opposed to the deeper layer named SiMa (containing silicates with magnesium).
And now for something completely different. The Sial people is also a tribe in the Pakistani region of Punjab.
9. Take the answer to the previous question, change one letter and give me a noun - a part of the house.

Answer: Sill

A sill in architecture is a horizontal part (mostly of timber, sometimes of stone) on the bottom of a window or of a door.
In the movie "Arsenic and Old Lace" by Frank Capra, there is a large trunk under the window that is designated as the window sill. To the utmost astonishment of Mortimer Brewster (role by Cary Grant), he finds a dead man in the window sill. The stranger was poisoned by Mortimer's lovely aunts (played by Josephine Hull and Jean Adair). But that's not the only surprise...
But wait, there is more. For those who don't fancy architecture but do more enjoy gastronomy, the Swedish word sill means herring.
Of course using one or more herrings as the bottom part of a window would be ... sill-y.
10. Take the answer to the previous question, change one letter and give me a noun - remember one of the definitions given for the answer to question 3. If you come up with the correct answer and you change one letter once more, you end up with "MILK" - what the MAID from the start had to bring home.

Answer: Silk

Did you find "SPIN" as the answer to question 3? Then you certainly remembered that mulberry caterpillars SPIN a thread of SILK.
Silk is a delicate fibre and the soft textile made out of it. Women loved to wear silk stockings, until the nylon versions hit the market: they're much cheaper and yet also make the wearer feel desirable. Men are known to wear silk ties, although ties made out of synthetic fibres have become more common. And a sheer luxury is silk nightwear.
On a different note, silk may also indicate soy milk.
So you see the route taken: MAID - SAID - SAIN - SPIN - SPIT - SPAT - SEAT - SEAL - SIAL - SILL - SILK - MILK.
The "extra hint in the title" to which I referred in the intro, is the awkward orthography of "the Maid' S Milk", indicating that all answers should start with S.
