Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who are the dedications in Lemony Snicket's books always addressed to?

Answer: Beatrice

Every dedication begins with "For Beatrice-" or "To Beatrice-" and then continues with its message. Beatrice appears to be Lemony Snicket's dead lover, who somehow died in a fire. He hints at all of this throughout the course of the books.
2. Every dedication deals with the fact that the person the book is being dedicated to is what?

Answer: dead

As the books subtly point out throughout the series, Beatrice died in a fire and is, in fact, dead. Some even show both Snicket's sad current emotions and his happy ones prior to her death. The dedications are wonderful little poems that I can't wait to read when a new book comes out. Each one gives a piece more of Beatrice's story.
3. In "The Bad Beginning", the dedication is a basic, three-word sentence. What is it?

Answer: darling, dearest, dead

The first book's dedication is sweet, simple, and to the point-
To Beatrice-
darling, dearest, dead.
This does, in fact, say a lot. From this alone, a reader can now assume Beatrice is not only dead, but was/is loved. This could be as Snicket's daughter, wife, girlfriend, friend, acquaintance, etc., but tells readers a lot nonetheless.
4. In the second book, "The Reptile Room", the dedication said, after the "For ________-" part: "My love for you shall live forever." What was the other sentence?

Answer: You, however, did not.

In "The Reptile Room", the dedication goes as follows: "For Beatrice- My love for you shall live forever. You, however, did not." In "The Reptile Room", Uncle Monty (also known as Uncle Montgomery Montgomery) also ended up dying.
5. In the fourth book, "The Miserable Mill", the author writes in the dedication, "My love flew like a butterfly Until death swooped down like a bat As the poet Emma Montana McElroy said: '______ ___ ___ __ ____'".

Answer: That's the end of that.

The dedication in this book reads:
To Beatrice-
My love flew like a butterfly
Until death swooped down like a bat
As the poet Emma Montana McElroy said:
"That's the end of that."

This line by Emma Montana McElroy is quite funny in relation to someone being dead. Whether Lemony Snicket planned on being funny is unknown. I have heard, however, that the movie "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" would have been much darker (in the evil sort of way) if he had written it himself, instead of leaving it open to interpretation.
6. In "The Ersatz Elevator", Snicket wrote in the dedication: "When we met, my life began. Soon afterward, yours _____."

Answer: ended

In the sixth book Lemony Snicket wrote, as his dedication;
For Beatrice-
When we met, my life began.
Soon afterward, yours ended.
This makes me think that Beatrice wasn't Lemony Snicket's daughter, because it wouldn't make sense--at least not the way he's going about telling the story. How could Beatrice "meet" Lemony Snicket if she was his daughter? She must have been his "true love".
7. In the ninth book's ("The Carnivorous Carnival"'s) dedication, Lemony Snicket says "Our love broke my heart". What did he say it did to the person he was writing the dedication to?

Answer: stopped his/her heart

"For Beatrice-
Our love broke my heart,
and stopped yours."
While I truly doubt that the two lovers' love was what actually stopped her heart, that was what Lemony Snicket said. I'll have to trust him on that one.
8. In the tenth book, "The Slippery Slope", the dedication says that "When we met, you were pretty, and I was lonely." What is Lemony Snicket now?

Answer: pretty lonely

"For Beatrice-
When we met, you were pretty, and I was lonely.
Now, I am pretty lonely."
This most likely means that Lemony Snicket didn't love anyone before Beatrice came along. He did hint at the fact he was lonely before her throughout the books as well.
9. In "The Grim Grotto", Lemony Snicket contradicts himself, in a way, in the dedication. The first sentence says, "Dead women tell no tales." The second one says what?

Answer: Sad men write them down.

"For Beatrice-
Dead women tell no tales.
Sad men write them down."
Lemony Snicket's only current books, "A Series of Unfortunate Events", do not, however, appear to be Beatrice's tales. "A Series of Unfortunate Events" has been written in the form of a research project, as if the Baudelaire orphans are actual children, instead of fictional characters.
10. In the movie, "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events", did Lemony Snicket and the movie writers include a new, unique dedication?

Answer: No

There was no dedication at all in the movie, although there was an actor pretending to be the narrator, Lemony Snicket. It gave the movie's viewers a feeling similar to the one created by reading the books. I hope you paid attention to the dedications when you read the books!
