Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How did Eric and Gwendolen Chant's parents die?

Answer: In a steamer accident

Eric and Gwendolen Chant are the main characters of this story. Gwendolen is the older one, and she was a very gifted witch. Eric was the younger one, and he learns the violin, well, at least until his sister turned it into a cat. Everyone called him Cat.

They moved in with an old woman called Mrs. Sharp after their parents died. Gwendolen went next door to learn witchcraft from a necromancer called Henry Nostrum.
2. The daughter of the man who owned the junk shop, Miss Larkins, was a clairvoyant. One day, she offered to tell Cat's fortune. What voice did she use when she told Cat's fortune?

Answer: A man's voice

Miss Larkins, through that man's voice, said to Cat that Cat had taken a weight from his mind, that he had been very careless, and he would face danger from at least two directions.
3. Two days later, a man who Cat thought was a Town Councillor came. Who was this man actaully?

Answer: Chrestomanci

Chrestomanci was a powerful nine-lived enchanter. He was actually Cat and Gwendolen's parent's cousin. Chrestomanci came because of a touching letter written by Gwendolen to him, or so they thought. He asked the Mayor to arrange for them to live with his family. Gwendolen was very excited but Cat was homesick before he left.
4. What were the names of Chrestomanci's children?

Answer: Roger and Julia

Roger and Julia were, as described in the book, pudgy. Mr. Saunders, the children's teacher and Chrestomanci's helper, taught Roger and Julia witchcraft. When it was time for the witchcraft lessons, Mr. Saunders sent Gwendolen and Cat away. Gwendolen was absolutely furious and demanded she get lessons also. She decided to prove herself to Chrestomanci by performing terrible witchcraft.
5. Which of these is not an ingredient Gwendolen bought from Mr. Baslam?

Answer: crows' beak

Cat, Gwendolen, Julia and Roger always had their Wednesday afternoons free. They each got five shillings on that day. That particular Wednesday, Cat and Gwendolen went to the village at the foot of the castle's hill. They went to Mr. Baslam's shop to buy supplies. At first, he didn't let them in, but when Gwendolen told him William Nostrum sent her, he opened the door and let them in.
6. Which two books did Gwendolen leave behind when she went to another world?

Answer: Elementary Spells and Magic for Beginners

When Gwendolen went to another world, she left an empty space in Cat's world and another Gwendolen will be sucked in from another world. Gwendolen's replica was a girl named Janet. Janet was sent in from another world, so naturally, she didn't know a thing about Cat's world. And because of this, Janet nearly blew her cover for a few times.
7. Where did Will Suggins tell Cat to meet him on Sunday, at 3 o'clock?

Answer: Bedlam Field

Cat accidently turned a maid, Epheumia into a frog, so Janet and he hid it in the wardrobe. Later on, another maid called Mary found Epheumia, and everyone accused Janet, because Janet was supposed to be Gwendolen, remember? Cat said it was himself that did it, and to his surprise, he succeeded in changing Epheumia back into a human. Cat thought Mr. Saunders and Chrestomanci were just trying to give him a fright. Will Suggins was Epheumia's boyfriend, and decided to pay back Cat for what he did to Epheumia.
8. What is the name of the inn that Henry Nostrum stayed in?

Answer: White Hart Inn

Henry Nostrum told them to meet him in the White Hart Inn. In a special parlour there, he told Janet and Cat they had to go into the garden where Chrestomanci forbade everyone except himself to go into on Sunday, two-thirty pm.
9. What was Gwendolen being carried by?

Answer: A bed with handholds

Janet and Cat went into the garden on Sunday noon, when the rest of Chrestomanci's family went to church. They thought that they saw the four seasons of a year in the garden. The portal to other worlds was a ruined arch. When they stepped through it, they saw the real Gwendolen in all her glory, with bulky golden clothing and eight men holding her bed with handholds, carrying her everywhere.
10. When touching which metal would Chrestomanci temporily lose his magic, and be confined to utter facts?

Answer: Silver

Henry and William Nostrum with other warlocks, witches and necromancers went into the garden and tied a watch chain to Chrestomanci's right wrist. Unfortunately, the watch chain was made of silver. They then tied him up with rough ropes, and left him there. Don't worry, evil can't prevail over good. Cat found out about his powers, and Chrestomanci's family, along with Michael Saunders, Bernard and Maud Bessemer took away the warlocks' and witches' magic.

The only bad thing was that Gwendolen shut herself up in her world where she was queen.
