"Ella Enchanted", Book vs. Movie Quiz

The book by Gail Carson Levine and the movie it inspired actually have little in common besides the premise, characters' names, and, of course, the title. I'm personally a fan of both, although in very different ways.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the movie, Lucinda -- who gave Ella the "gift" of obedience -- is also her fairy godmother. Who is Ella's fairy godmother in the book?

Answer: Mandy, the cook

All fairies, except Lucinda, conceal their true nature. As far as Ella's father knew, Mandy was simply the cook -- even Ella didn't know, until after her mother died.
2. Where and when, in the book, does Ella first speak with Prince Char?

Answer: In the graveyard, when she flees from her mother's funeral

Although she's seen him before, they've never been close enough to talk. He knew Ella's mother and has clearly been crying when he approaches Ella.
3. Rather than community college (as in the movie), Ella and Hattie go to finishing school together. Which is the only subject that Ella enjoys there?

Answer: Writing

Due to the constant commands and her forced obedience, she eventually attains excellence at all of these subjects, but she only enjoys the subject in which the Mistress doesn't issue orders.
4. The movie shows Prince Char rescuing Ella from the ogres. In the book, he is only able to help because of what she's already done to the ogres. What did she do?

Answer: Used their own language to force them to obey her

Ella has a gift for languages and realizes that she can use this gift to turn the ogres' hypnotic tongue against them. Very satisfying, for the obedient to become the obeyed.
5. In the movie, Ella was still a young child when her mother died, and a young woman when the main adventure occurs. In the book, the main adventure begins at her mother's death, and continues for the next year or so. How old is she when her mother dies?

Answer: Almost fifteen

When the prince first suggests marriage -- jokingly, she thinks -- she responds that she's too young.
6. There are certain characters in the movie who don't exist in the book. Which one of the following IS in the book?

Answer: King Jerrold, Char's father

Prince Char's parents are still living, he has no uncle that we know of and certainly no cartoonish evil snake hanging around, and as for the magical book -- it is simply that, a book, with no further explanation for its existence.
7. The main adventure in the movie is Ella's quest to find Lucinda, but in the book she finds Lucinda at the giants' wedding, unrepentant after having bestowed another horrible "gift". What accursed gift did she give the newlywed giants?

Answer: The gift of being together always

Lucinda believes that this gift will give the couple "companionship and felicitous union" and willfully ignores her fellow fairies' explanations as to how her gift is bound to backfire.
8. Lucinda follows up this generous act with another: in regards to Ella's obedience, Lucinda tells her, "Be happy to be blessed with such a lovely quality," thus essentially turning Ella into a puppet. What command from her father does she then cheerfully and willingly attempt to follow?

Answer: Marry a rich old man so her father could pay off his debts

As it turns out, the old man is not so rich, so she's off the hook. No one told her to kill the prince, although she feared such a thing; the prince himself gave Ella a centaur as a gift; and her father's marriage to Olga was not so loveless, thanks to yet another of Lucinda's well-intentioned but unappreciated gifts. And yes, Ella's father really was this nasty in the book.
9. While the movie shows a whirlwind courtship between Ella and Prince Char, the book has the two writing letters while the prince is gone for a year. Where does he go and why?

Answer: Ayortha, in a long tradition for preserving peace between the kingdoms

After six months, the prince openly declares his love for Ella and his wish to marry. She loves him too much to put him in that kind of danger, and so tricks him into believing she was fooling him all along and is really a shallow, selfish gold-digger.
10. Lucinda, in the movie, never learns her lesson. In the book, Mandy challenges her to try on her "gifts" for herself and see how she likes them. After spending six months as a squirrel and six months being obedient, she is a changed fairy. What gift does she give Ella and Prince Char for their wedding?

Answer: A box that grows or shrinks to accommodate whatever it's given to hold

The rug was actually a gift from Mandy to Ella's mother; Ella's noticing the rug and asking Mandy about it was in fact the beginning of the revelation that Mandy was her fairy godmother.
