1. How many March sisters are there?

Answer: Four

Margaret, Josephine, Elizabeth and Amy March
2. Who is the youngest March sister?

Answer: Amy

There have been several films and TV series made which inmply Beth is the youngest. Beth is 13 at the beginning of the book and Amy is 12.
3. Why does Jo call Laurie Teddy?

Answer: It is a shortened form of his actual name, Theodore.

His name is Theodore Laurence. When at school his friends called him Dora, which he hated. He prefers to be called Laurie, which everyone but Jo calls him.
4. Why is Amy caned at school?

Answer: She brings in pickled limes, which are forbidden.

Amy is a popular girl who likes to keep up with fashion and trends. Pickled limes are the latest trends and she brings in a bag of them to share with her friends. Another girl tells the teacher who forces Amy to drop all 24 limes out of the window then canes her hand.
5. Why was Amy sent to stay with Aunt March?

Answer: Beth had scarlet fever and Amy had not had it

When Beth contracted scarlet fever we discover Meg and Jo already had it so were safe but Amy was not. She was sent to stay with Aunt March until Beth had recovered.
6. Which book is referenced in chapter headings?

Answer: The Pilgrim's Progress

All the sisters were familiar with "The Pilgrim's Progress" and mentioned it a few times in dialogue. Some chapter headings are "Jo Meets Apollyon," "Meg Goes to Vanity Fair" and "Castles in the Air".
7. Where is Mr March at the time the story takes place?

Answer: Serving as a pastor with the army

"Little Women" was written at the time of the American Civil War and Mr March away serving as a pastor to the army. He sends letters to his family, one of which Mrs March reads aloud at the beginning of the book. In the letter he refers to his 'little women.'
8. What does Jo sell for $25?

Answer: Her hair

Jo wanted to do something for her father, who was ill. The family was poor and the only thing she had to sell was her thick hair which would have been long.
9. Which school do Meg and Jo attend?

Answer: They don't, they both have jobs.

Although only 15 and 16 Jo and Meg both worked to help support the family. Jo was paid companion to Aunt March and Meg was governess to a family called Greene.
10. Does Mr March return home?

Answer: Yes, as the family are celebrating Christmas

The chapter is called "Pleasant Meadows" and is one of my favourites. The Marches are preparing to celebrate Christmas with Laurie and his grandfather when someone knocks on the door and brings in a muffled man, Mr March.
