Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I had $3999 and I spent $1999 on a shelf. How much have I got left?

Answer: $2000

The problem is a subtraction: 3999 minus 1999 equals 2000.
2. What does 1/10 x 1/10 equal?

Answer: 1/100

It is 1/10 of 1/10 so the number has to become smaller. Multiply the two numerators (top part of each fraction) and the two denominators (bottom part of each fraction) to get the answer of 1/100.
3. John had $50. He then spent $22. What percentage of his money did he spend?

Answer: 44%

If John had $100 it would be 22% but he only had $50 so you have to double the percentage. 22 doubled equals 44. You could also work this out by dividing 22 by 50 and then multiplying it by 100 to get the percentage.
4. I had $1 and I spent 75c. I received 3 coins for my change. What were the coins?

Answer: 10c, 10c, 5c

The only way you could make up 25c with 3 coins is 10c, 10c, 5c.
5. 3x - 4 = 5. What is x?

Answer: 3

9 minus 4 is 5. 9 is 3x3, so x must equal 3.
6. 5x + 2y = 16. If x=2, What is y?

Answer: 3

If x is 2 5x must be 10. To make the answer 16 you need another 6. So 2x3 is 6 so y must be 3.
7. What is the next prime number after 31?

Answer: 37

A prime number is a number that can only be divided by itself and 1. 35 can be divided by 7 so it is not a prime number. 39 can be divided by 3. 41 and 37 are prime numbers but 37 is closer to 31 so 37 is the correct answer.
8. 4x + 5y = 21. If x=4, what is y?

Answer: 1

If x=4, 4x is 16. If y=1, 5y is 5. 16+5=21.
9. 9x + 16y = 189. If x=21, what is y?

Answer: 0

9x21 is already 189 so you don't need to add anything to make 189. So y must be 0.
10. How much change would I get from $10.00 if I spent $6.44?

Answer: $3.56

Money spent + change must equal $10. $10.00 - $6.44 = $3.56.
