Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The sky suits that Matt and the others wear during their time aboard the Hyperion are made of what kind of animal skin?

Answer: Snow leopard

"The hide was soft and tanned, and lined inside, from hood to heel, with a layer of fur, thicker and whiter than any I'd ever seen." Mrs. Ram swiftly alters the suits to fit Matt, Kate, and Nadira.
2. Theodore Grunel was an inventor as well as a collector. One of his creations was a coffin fitted with devices that are useful for signaling from the grave (in case you're accidentally buried alive). Which of the following devices was NOT included?

Answer: Signal flag

Grunel had a fear of being buried alive, so if he was then he could simply use all the strange apparatuses in his specially-built coffin to signal for help. He also built an Automatic Dresser and Undresser, a phrenology machine, the winged suits, and much more.
3. What is inside the safe in the Hyperion's apartments?

Answer: Grunel's diary

There are six doors in the safe, each one leading to the next. Hal blasts the doors off, but once he and Matt open the final (and real) safe, they find only a small book-Grunel's diary full of strange scribblings.
4. When Matt and Nadira are trying to get into the barn area, something is blocking the doorway. Matt kicks the door open and realizes, upon entering, that the thing blocking the door was in fact a frozen ____________.

Answer: Chicken

This strikes Matt as really funny (understandably), but after he gets himself under control, he takes in the whole room full of frozen beasts and thinks it's actually quite eerie.
5. Does Matt compare Nadira to the Statue of Liberty?

Answer: No

It is actually Nadira who compares Matt to the famous statue "La Liberté Éclairant le Monde." She says that he's like a beacon, standing there gazing into the future.
6. Matt and Kate are melting ice for water when they finally make up. What is Kate's answer when Matt asks about her relationship with Hal?

Answer: "I do hope he proposes!"

Kate only says this because she wants to be able to tell people that yes, she has been proposed to. She would never accept, much to Matt's relief.
7. What does the Aruba Consortium want to do with Grunel's Prometheus Engine?

Answer: Destroy it

The Aruba Consortium has just discovered a huge new field of hydrium, which they want to drill for and sell. Mr. Barton and the others don't want anyone to find out about the Prometheus Engine because if people started making their own fuel, the Aruba Consortium would go bankrupt.
8. One of Grunel's inventions kills Mr. Barton. Which one is it?

Answer: The phrenology machine

Barton leaps to the side to avoid an aerozoan's tentacle, but just then the ship lurches and he's thrown into the seat of the phrenology machine. It goes crazy this time, the tips on the little fingers digging into his skull until he dies.
9. The blueprints to Grunel's machine got left behind on the Hyperion. Where were they?

Answer: Inside Hal's rucksack

Hal gave his rucksack to Matt so Matt could blast the hangar doors off of the Hyperion. Later, Matt, trying to escape from the sinking ship, didn't think about the sack being still onboard, and it was left behind. Grunel's blueprints sank to the bottom of the Antarctic Sea.
10. How many bricks of gold were inside the cargo hatch of the ornithopter?

Answer: Forty

Matt finds Kate in the hangar, studying the ornithopter's curious design. He goes to take a seat and accidentally discovers the little door, which houses two pillowcases full of gold. Hal gets thirty-two bars, and Matt and Nadira each get four. Although Kate doesn't mind Matt being poor, she's very happy for him: "The gold's glimmer was nothing compared to the brightness of her face."
