Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The previous quiz concluded with a group of animals escaping as the circus was travelling. Who assists Toby in finding and returning the animals?

Answer: Mr. Stubbs

Mr. Stubbs, the monkey, assists Toby in returning the monkeys to the wagon. Toby feels that he is able to communicate with Mr. Stubbs, who he describes as ordering the monkeys back onto the repaired wagon. The wagon driver, who feared that several, or even, all of the monkeys would be lost, allows Mr. Stubbs to stay with Toby rather than return to the wagon.

This pleases Toby, who considers Mr. Stubbs a good friend.
2. The next day after the monkeys are found, Toby receives an invitation to a dinner party. Who invites him to dinner?

Answer: Mr. Treat

Mr. Treat (the Human Skeleton) tells Toby that both he and his wife Lilly (the Fat Lady) have come to like Toby and were impressed when they heard how he was able to bring the monkeys back to the wagon. He tells Toby that he is invited to a dinner that Lilly will be cooking herself.

At first, Toby thinks he will not be able to attend because he will be busy working at the refreshment stand, but he then realizes that it is Sunday and he will have free time. Perhaps best of all for Toby is that Mr. Stubbs will also be allowed to attend the dinner.
3. Toby finds that he is not the only guest at the dinner. Who is not among the dinner guests?

Answer: Miss Cushing

Since the circus remains on Sunday where it camped on Saturday, this allows Mr. and Mrs. Treat the opportunity to decorate the area where they will eat along with preparing the food. There are actually two young ladies who are twins and very pale of skin and hair, who are called the Albino Children in circus advertising. Signor Castro is the sword swallower for the circus. Mademoiselle Spelletti is the snake charmer. Mr. Jacobs supervised Toby selling refreshments inside the circus tent, and was not invited to the party.

The other members of the dinner party are Toby, Mr. Stubbs, and the Treats. Mr. Treat tells the others about Toby recapturing the monkeys, which seems to leave Toby embarrassed.
4. At the dinner party, a mishap occurs when one of the guests begins choking on food. Which guest deals with this problem?

Answer: Mr. Treat

Mr. Treat was speaking when an mouthful of food goes down his windpipe rather than his esophagus. Mrs. Treat responds by pounding his back so heartily that Toby fears her hand will go right through Mr. Treat. Earlier he had been a big talker at the meal when he began to make a speech welcoming his guests to dinner. Mrs. Treat interrupted that speech telling the guests that if they waited for him to finish, the food would grow cold. Mrs. Treat then scolds her husband for not chewing his food thoroughly enough before swallowing it.
5. One night when there is a heavy storm while the circus is travelling, Toby is allowed to travel in an enclosed wagon with the women and children of the circus. He meets and talks to a girl named Ella Mason. What does Ella do in the circus?

Answer: She rides the horses.

Ella, known as Mademoiselle Jeannette, stands atop a team of horses, with her mother, while they trot in the ring. Toby, who has seen this act, describes her in very flattering terms, which pleases Ella greatly. Earlier, he thought he had fallen in her estimation when she found out he was a non-performing member of the circus. Toby seems to have a crush on Ella, as he kisses her goodbye when he leaves the wagon.
6. Toby has been considering that he should leave the circus and return home. He confides his plan to several people. Who is not one of those people?

Answer: Job Lord

It is the cruel treatment Toby receives from Mr. Lord (and Mr. Jacobs) that plays a big role in Toby wanting to leave the circus. In addition, Toby misses his guardian, Unc'l Daniel. Samuel, Ben, and Lilly all express sympathy towards Toby, saying that this circus is not a good place for a boy his age. Ben encourages him to be frugal with the money he has saved when he escapes. Lilly promises to give him some food when he decides to leave. Toby has saved money from the tips he has received from customers and the wage he receives from Job Lord, and has saved slightly more than seven dollars.
7. Toby finds that his attempt to leave the circus is delayed because his money is taken from him. Who does this?

Answer: Mr. Stubbs

Toby wakes up after a nap to find that his money is missing. As best he and Old Ben can piece together, Mr. Stubbs took the money from Toby's pouch while he was sleeping and threw it coin by coin into the woods. Earlier, Toby had been counting his money and had to stop Mr. Stubbs several times from trying to grab the coins. Toby wants to search for the small coins but Old Ben tells him that the money is probably lost forever and it is best if he just forgets about it. Toby despairs because it will take him quite a bit of time to earn that much money again.
8. Toby finds that Mr. Castle is to be his new supervisor in the circus. What job will Mr. Castle train Toby to do?

Answer: He will perform an act

Mr. Castle works with the horses and he plans to train Toby to ride the horses bareback. Toby does not like the idea of working with Mr. Castle, who he believes will also be a harsh boss. Old Ben tells him, however, that if learns an act he can be his own boss and will earn more money than by selling refreshments. Also, remember that Ella performs on the horses also.
9. Toby finds, when he is training with Mr. Castle, that Mr. Castle is a harsh instructor. How does he punish Toby for not doing things correctly?

Answer: He uses a whip on him

Mr. Castle uses a whip, described as curling around Toby's legs, on him. During his period of training, Toby cries himself to sleep several times from the pain of his lashing. Toby is learning to stand and keep his balance on top of a horse as it trots.

Despite this, Toby is able to rapidly gain skill in riding the horse. Toby's friends, Old Ben and the Treats, are not able to intervene with Mr. Castle in the same way that they were able to intervene with Mr. Lord. Toby's only consolation may be that will eventually be able to perform with Ella.
10. Toby has the chance to speak with Ella again. What gift does she offer him that he regretfully turns down?

Answer: Money

Toby confesses to Ella--after swearing her to secrecy--that he is still hoping to escape from the circus. After hearing that he has been trying to save money, she offers three dollars that she has been given by her mother. Toby, saying that it would be wrong to take the money from the younger girl, regretfully turns the offer down. Ella is disappointed that Toby wants to leave the circus, hoping that they will have a chance to perform together before this happens.
