Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How did the Nome King plan on raiding Oz?

Answer: By digging a tunnel

The Nome King was furious that his Magic Belt had been taken from him, but he had no safe way of reaching the Emerald City to take it back, since the deadly desert was impossible to cross. So the nomes devised a plan to dig UNDER the deadly desert to reach Oz.

The nomes were strong, hard-working creatures and digging came naturally to them. Despite this, it took them a long time to dig such a long tunnel.
2. Who did General Guph first invite to join the army?

Answer: The Whimsies

The Whimsies were powerfully-built people who loved a good fight. They could never be killed, but they weren't perfect. Despite their strong bodies, Whimsies had extremely tiny heads. They tried in vain to pretend they didn't by crafting heads to wear. Their heads were extravagant and multi-colored.
3. Next, General Guph recruited the Growleywogs. What did he promise them in return for their help?

Answer: Slaves

General Guph set out to recruit the most evil, good-hating creatures in Oz. The Country of the Growleywogs housed the creatures that were nothing but skin, bone, and muscle. They were pure strength, and their evilness matched their strength. Guph promised them 10,000 Ozites to enslave to work for them, and their leader, the Grand Gallipoot, demanded 20,000 slaves. Guph readily agreed. Of course, the Growleywogs schemed to fight the Nome King after they won the Emerald City. Guph was thinking the same thing, betraying the King to rule the Nomes himself.
4. What was completely forbidden in the Emerald City?

Answer: A certain fountain

Oz was a very open, nurturing place to live. However, it had its dark places. One was the deadly desert, which no creature could stand against. Another was the Forbidden Fountain, which was near the palace. Legend said that a king once ruled Oz, and he was cruel to his people. So Glinda the Good made a fountain filled with water that erased all memories, rendering its drinker as innocent and confused as a baby.

The king drank from it, became a good man, and made his subjects drink from the fountain too so they could forget his cruelty.
5. What did Dorothy and Ozma do to make Aunt Em and Uncle Henry more comfortable?

Answer: They decided to give them chores

Dorothy's caregivers were essentially being evicted because they couldn't pay back their loan. They had nowhere to go, so Dorothy offered to take them to Oz to live. They didn't really believe her, but they had to once Ozma used the magic belt and brought them to the Emerald City! They wore dirty, tattered clothing and were given nice, fancy clothing to wear.

It was strange for Aunt Em and Uncle Henry to be waited on hand and foot, and Aunt Em stated she wished they would let her do something, such as wash the dishes after each meal. Dorothy and Ozma, kind-hearted as always, plotted to find small chores for them to undertake so they would feel more at home.
6. What did Dorothy eat in Bunville?

Answer: Furniture

In Bunville, nearly everything was made out of food - even the people. There was bread, crackers, waffles, and even more. By the time Dorothy reached Bunville, she was ravenous and really needed to eat. Some citizens offered her an old wheelbarrow that wasn't very fresh. But Dorothy really enjoyed a flavorful shortbread piano.
7. What was one of the things the Bunny King was going to miss about being king?

Answer: The lily pad throne

The Bunny King hated being the king of Bunnyville. When he learned Dorothy was good friends with Glinda the Good, he asked her to request that he no longer be the king. As time passed, the Bunny King also asked that he get to keep his lovely, comfortable lily pad chair.

It was silver with diamonds and a satin seat. He also wanted his nice clothing and entertainment. Dorothy explained that a bunny living in the wild didn't need nice clothes or any of the fine things he'd grown used to.
8. What did the Scarecrow's new home look like?

Answer: A huge ear of corn

Dorothy loved the Scarecrow's new home. It appeared to be a massive ear of corn that was surrounded by cornfields. It had five levels, one of which was solely dedicated to entertaining friends. For a while the Scarecrow had lived with Ozma in the Emerald City, and then stayed with the Tin Woodman a bit. But after some time, Scarecrow realized he missed the cornfields.
9. What did Dorothy want to do with the Magic Belt?

Answer: Take herself and all of her friends to Kansas

Ozma learned in her Magic Picture that she had several enemies all coming to destroy Oz. Dorothy learned about it from the Tin Woodman. When she and her good friends (including the Scarecrow and Tik-Tok) met up with Ozma, Dorothy wanted to use the Magic Belt to take the group back to Kansas. She suggested they load their pockets with emeralds, sell them, and use the profits to buy back Uncle Henry's farm. But Ozma refused, stating she would not leave her people behind.
10. In the simplest terms, what saved Emerald City from its enemies?

Answer: Dust

Ozma refused to battle the fierce army that grew closer and closer, saying no living thing should be hurt or killed. It was the Scarecrow who came up with his wonderful plan. Simply put, Ozma used the Magic Belt to fill the tunnel with dust. Soon, the Growleywogs, Whimsies, Phanphasms, and King of the Nomes were coughing, their throats getting very dry.

The first thing they saw when they burst from the ground was the Forbidden Fountain. Inside, it contained the Water of Oblivion. Each and every evil being drank and lost their memories, rendering them harmless.

The Scarecrow and Tin Woodman threw King Roquat into the Fountain themselves and Ozma told him to order his fifty thousand nomes to march home.
