Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Butter has been made the world over for centuries. How far back does the earliest written record go?

Answer: 4,500 years

The first reference to butter in our written history was found on a 4,500-year-old limestone tablet illustrating how butter was made.
2. From which language do we trace the word "butter"?

Answer: Greek

It is thought the word butter comes from bou-tyron, Greek for "cow cheese".
In ancient Rome, butter was valued cosmetically. It was used as a cream to make skin smooth; both Greeks and Romans massaged it into their hair to make it shine.
3. You may never have heard of Caroline Shawk Brooks, unless you are from Arkansas where she is a bit of a hero, but what particular use did she put butter to in the 1860s?

Answer: Sculpting into portraits

Like many farm wives, Caroline Shawk Brooks churned butter and sold the surplus to her neighbours.
In order make her butter stand out from the rest, she shaped it into shells, animals and faces, carving it by hand. Customers soon began commissioning her to make portraits in butter.
At the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, she displayed a bas relief called 'Dreaming Iolanthe'.
This sparked of a passion among Americans in particular for sculpting butter and it became an art form often seen at agricultural fairs across the country.
4. Some ancient peoples valued butter so much that their dead were buried with barrels of it. Which of these were among them?

Answer: Irish

Ancient Scots, Norsemen and Finns also had this practice.
Meanwhile, English sailors in Elizabethan times were guaranteed 1/4 lb of butter a day in their rations.
It was also an old English custom to present newlyweds with a pot of butter as a wish for fertility and prosperity.
5. "The Butter Battle Book" was a rhyming anti-war story by an author noted for producing books for children. Who was it?

Answer: Dr Seuss

The book told the story of the Yooks and the Zooks who lived on opposite sides of a long curving wall. The Yooks wore blue and the Zooks wore orange.
Their ideological difference was how to eat bread: with the butter side up, or with the butter side down.
An arms race threatened mutual destruction.
It was a work of fiction. After all, nothing like that could happen in real life...
6. "A big jug of coffee had just been set in the hearth, the seed-cakes were gone, and the dwarves were starting on a round of buttered scones, when there came a loud knock" Where, in literature, would you find these lines?

Answer: "The Hobbit" - J R R Tolkien

"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit..." are the opening words of a well known tale by J. R. R. Tolkien.
The scene is set for the arrival of Gandalf and some dwarfs.
"The Hobbit" was published in 1937 and quickly became a favourite among generations of readers.
Between 2012 and 2014, three movies based on the book and characters were made.
7. Most of the butter we consume is of a yellow colour. What natural pigment gives it this colour?

Answer: Carotene

It comes from the carotene in the diet of the milk producing animal, which includes hay, silage, grains and cereals.
These also give butter a high level of Vitamin A, which is good for us.
8. Which hero of children's rhyme "...bought some butter, but, she said, the butter's bitter; if I put it in my batter it will make my batter bitter, but a bit of better butter will make my batter better."

Answer: Betty Botter

"So she bought a bit of butter better than her bitter butter, and she put it in her batter and the batter was not bitter. So 'twas better Betty Botter bought a bit of better butter."

Something of a tongue twister, this appeared in the "Mother Goose" series of modern nursery rhymes in the mid 20th Century.
9. Who, according to literature, would you be likely to find in the Three Broomsticks drinking a pint of butterbeer?

Answer: Harry Potter

"Tell you what," said Ron, his teeth chattering, "shall we go for a butterbeer in the Three Broomsticks?" - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, J.K. Rowling.
Butterbeer had the ability to make house elves intoxicated, but had only a slight effect on wizards.
If you search hard enough on the internet you will find recipes for 'Harry Potter butterbeer'.
Some of them do not need any alcohol! (Which seems to rather defeat the purpose of having a beer.)
10. If you cream together some unsalted butter with icing sugar and boiling water, what spirit should you add to make a delicious accompaniment to Christmas pudding or mince pies?

Answer: Brandy

Take 25g/4oz of softened unsalted butter, mix in 125g/4oz of icing sugar with 2 tbsp boiling water and 3 tbsp brandy.
Cream together the butter and the icing sugar. Beat in the boiling water and brandy until smooth. Chill until needed and serve with mince pies or Christmas pudding.
Or you could do as I do and buy it ready-made from the supermarket.
