Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is commonly believed to be the first person to actively try to create a machine to record the voices of the dead?

Answer: Thomas Alva Edison

Many people believe that in the 1920s, Thomas Alva Edison was reportedly building a machine to achieve spirit communication with the dead. A few years later Edison stated he was joking about the device, and that he had not been working on any spirit communication inventions.
2. What electronic devices have been reported to have EVP messages recorded on them?

Answer: All of these

All you really need to record EVP is an audio recording device. The most common items to use are digital or cassette tape recorders, but people have also recorded EVP on camcorders, telephone answering machines and directly on their computer. Basically, if the device can record sound, it has the ability to record an EVP.
3. So you bought a voice recorder, and captured an EVP. What is the best way to get that recording onto your computer if the recorder does not have a USB port?

Answer: Use a male to male connection cable

While holding the recorder close to the computer and playing the recording while recording on the computer can work, you will get a very poor quality recording. By using a male to male connector cable, you can transfer the exact recording from the tape to the computer with no added interference from children, pets, or other distractions that may be around the computer as you record.
4. When recording an EVP, some people like to use a device to generate background static. What is this device *commonly* called?

Answer: A white noise generator

It is believed by many people that providing some sort of background noise will produce better results for their EVP recordings. If you want to try this, you can use any kind of a white noise generator while recording. White noise is the same sound that you get on a television when the channel is nothing but static.

Franks Box is an electronic system that uses random radio frequencies as a method of spirit communication. The Franks Box is also known as form of instrumental trans-communication, or ITC.

The K2 meter is a type of EMF detector, much like other EMF detectors but it uses lights to indicate the energy instead of a needle. Fans of SciFi's program, "Ghost Hunters", may have seen this meter being used by Chris Fleming on one of their investigations.
5. If you use a cassette recorder to record EVP, how often should you reuse the tape for new recordings?

Answer: Never

As a basic rule, it is best not to use a tape more than one time. Most recorders will not completely erase the tape when you record over it, resulting in a faint echo of the first recording. Think of it this way; you would never reuse a roll of film, because of getting a double image. Reusing a cassette tape can give you the same basic effect as reusing film, but instead of a double image, it can produce a type of double audio.
6. Some EVPs can be very faint and difficult to hear. What is the common explanation for several people hearing different phrases in an EVP recording?

Answer: Audio matrixing

Matrixing happens when our brains receive scattered information that it can't understand, and the brain tries to fill in the blanks by producing recognizable patterns and shapes. Matrixing can happen with all of our senses, including matrixing of smells. Think of matrixing like a jigsaw puzzle with a couple missing pieces. Our brains will naturally fill in those empty spaces with what we believe should be there.
7. The quality of an EVP recording is separated into three basic categories. What are the classes of EVPs called?

Answer: Class A, Class B, and Class C

The class A EVP is a 100% audible, clear voice. The voice will sound like it is saying the same thing to any listener. Class A EVP recordings are much less common than the other classes of EVP recordings, and are highly sought after.

The class B EVP is usually practically audible, some doubt exists to the interpretation and the syllables or consonant pronunciation is questionable. Typically, the majority of EVP recordings will fall into this class.

The class C EVP will be the worst quality voices that you can capture. It is nearly impossible to understand what is being said even with the help of computer enhancement. A lot of amateur investigators make the mistake of over processing the EVP, turning them into what I like to call the "Mr. Roboto Voice"; the EVP is so over processed, it will sound like a voice over a very bad cell phone connection.
8. Most EVP recordings are full sentences and understandable conversations.

Answer: False

An EVP recording is usually four seconds or less, consisting of one or two words or a short phrase. Many recordings are two to four syllables.
9. Which of the following would be a bad place to try EVP recording?

Answer: A busy shopping mall

A noisy location like a busy shopping mall, with lots of voices and background sounds is typically not a good place to try to record EVP. It becomes too hard to tell the difference between the "voices of the dead" and the voices of other shoppers. You should always get permission from the property owners of the location you are going to be recording EVP.
10. EVP stands for Electronic Voice ___________.

Answer: Phenomenon

Electronic Voice Phenomenon is the term used to describe voices of spirits caught on tape. Recording EVP is one of the easiest methods of paranormal investigation that exists, and many people get started in the paranormal field by experimenting with audio recordings. Remember that any evidence without proper documentation of where and when it was obtained is useless. Bring the pen and paper, write down everything, and soon you will have a great case to present to the property owners and other researchers.
