Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The legend of my state begins in the 18th century, when a certain lady became pregnant with her final child. Feeling that she had too many to start with, she is said to have exclaimed: "May the Devil take this one!" How many children did she have-including her unborn child?

Answer: 13

Are you still with us? Yes? Whew! You can take a breath-you'll need it. The 13th child of a Mrs. Leeds (or Shourds, the legend has many discrepancies), the Jersey Devil was unwanted from the start. There are stories saying that he was the 6th, 8th, 10th, 12th, or 13th child. I'm going to stick with the overall most popular versions of this legend, which places him in the number 13 spot.
2. You and your friend must keep one step ahead! The answers to these questions are the only lifeline you have. Now for the next one: Which of the following New Jersey towns is the Jersey Devil NOT said to have originated from?

Answer: Hammonton

Very good. If you click on my my player ID, you'll notice that Hammonton is the town I'm from. All three of the others are supposed places of the devil's birth. The most popular seems to be Leed's Point.
3. You find an axe to chop your way through the thick Pine Barrens with the Jersey Devil hot on your trail. Here is the next one. There are many stories as to how this child actually became a 'devil'. Was there ever a version that told of him being normal at first?

Answer: Yes

Catch your breath! The website www.the-jersey-devil.com/devilstory.html puts it this way: "Mother Leeds was supposedly a witch and the child's father was the devil himself. The child was born normal, but then changed form. It changed from a normal baby to a creature with hooves, a horse's head, bat wings and a forked tail." Quite frightening to say the least!
4. There are also many versions of the story that explain just WHY the Jersey Devil, after he was born, went away and stayed away. One story says that he stayed perched on a stoop of the house he was born in and his mother told him to go away and never return. Another says that a bold clergyman performed an exorcism. Here's the question for your life: How long did the exorcism last?

Answer: 100 years

Whew! Did you know that one? I don't know how long an exorcism is supposed to last, but the one for the Jersey Devil lasted 100 years.
5. Now this brings us to the 19th century. There were many sightings of our friend during this time. By the way, these questions will get progressively harder! OK. Here's the question: In what year was the exorcism ended?

Answer: 1840

In 1840 the Jersey Devil's after effects were felt by every farmer in South Jersey. Livestock all over was killed and left to rot. Don't let that happen to you! Did you get this one right?
6. You finally make it to shelter when you see that the devil has superhuman power! What is it that he can do?

Answer: fly

Oh no! You find out the hard way that this is no ordinary creature! Looks like those wings do more than just scare people! I hope you're still with us...do you need to recuperate from that shock?
7. As the Jersey Devil comes into the cabin, he does something that has been his trademark through the years. What is that?

Answer: scream

He gives a shrill, ear-piercing scream that makes your blood run cold and almost paralyzes you. But you must keep going! Are you going to be able to run? Hurry! He may catch up to you!
8. As you're running through the thick Pine Barrens you notice lights ahead. You begin to run toward it. The Jersey Devil is gaining! Hurry! Just answer this: In what month was the Jersey Devil seen for the first time in the 20th century?

Answer: January

During the week of January 16th to the 23rd 1909, the Jersey Devil was seen all over the Delaware Valley. Looks like you have one more date to add!
9. You make it to a village where there's live people! Your joy is short-lived, however, as you find that the Jersey Devil is still following you! Aw, nuts! And you thought you lost him! As he tears through the little pub that you ran into, you take off into the night. For the question: During the hysteria in 1909, what animal was captured by a Jacob Hope and Norman Jefferies, claiming it was the Jersey Devil?

Answer: kangaroo

Whew! You just escaped that encounter! Don't stop, keep running! Taking advantage of the hysteria felt by New Jerseyans everywhere, Norman Jefferies and Jacob Hope kidnapped a kangaroo, painted stripes on it, glued claws and wings on it and claimed it to be a breed of Australian vampire! Now that you've seen the Jersey Devil for yourself, what's your opinion?
10. Here is the final question. Is your mind clear? This will be rather simple. For your life--which T.V. program that deals with the paranormal had an episode entitled "The Jersey Devil"?

Answer: The X-Files

So, what's the verdict? Did you make it? Let me know how you did and how you liked the quiz. I have always been intrigued about the most famous legend of my home state. My ex-brother in law once told me that he was a descendant of the Jersey Devil. No, really! It explains a lot anyway....Sleep tight-Drac
