Answer: Skin

The earliest account dates from India in the second century B.C. Sushruta transplanted skin.
2. In ancient Egypt who or what was Uraeus?

Answer: A cobra

It was a sacred cobra at the front of the Pharoah's head dress. It was supposed to spit fire at the Pharoah's enemies.
3. In which century was the truck system of payment outlawed in Britain?

Answer: 19th

In Britain the truck system meant that workers had to accept payment of part of the wages in vouchers that could only be used at stores owned by the employers. Goods were overpriced and often also of poor quality. 'Truck' could also involve payment in kind rather than money. In 1831 such practices were made illegal in all trades and by 1887 in every business.
4. Who or what was a glebe in the Middle Ages?

Answer: Farm

This was land where the parish priest grew his own food. Serfs were said to 'be tied to the glebe'.
5. Which country was the first to be knocked out of the Football World Cup in a penalty shoot out?

Answer: France

Penalty shoot outs were introduced in 1982. In the semi-finals of the competition that year, West Germany knocked out France in a penalty shoot out.

Cuauhxicalli translates as 'eagle gourd vessel' and was used for sacrificing the human heart.

A scullogue was a farmer who had managed to put by some money and was in a position to give loans. The loans were repaid after the harvest or when the debtor returned from migrant work in either Ireland or England.

About 17,000 WW1 veterans and their families marched to Washington to demand the payment of bonuses. Unfortnately the bonuses were not due to mature til 1945. This was the time of the Great Depression and people were desperate.

Answer: Adenauer

Adenauer was imprisoned after a failed attempt on Hitler's life in 1944. He later became an outstanding chancellor and did much to rebuild Germany after the war. He also played a key part in finding a new role for West Germany in the various forerunners to the European Union.
10. Did William Shakespeare enjoy some palanquins with friends?

Answer: No

A palanquin was a luxurious covered seat or bed on poles which was carried by four men. Only the very rich could afford this type of public transport.
