quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We've all heard the health benefits of a single glass of red wine a day can have for you. Does a bar of chocolate have the same amount of antioxidants that that glass of wine has?

Answer: Yes

Yes, indeed it does! Five fluid ounces of red wine and a 1.5 ounce chocolate bar both contain about 200 milligrams of polyphenols. Polyphenols are very potent antioxidants found in such things as dark grape juice, tea, and chocolate.
2. Chocolate brings out intense emotions in people; one survey found that 50 percent of women would choose chocolate over making love. What emotional feeling does eating chocolate mimic?

Answer: being in love

According to the research of psychoanalysts, women release phenylethylamine (PEA) into the brain when they are in love. PEA is an endorphin, and chocolate is chock full of PEA.
3. We all know that there is nothing like the sweet taste of chocolate on your tongue, but what about the scent of chocolate? How can the smell of chocolate help you?

Answer: slows brain waves

While smelling chocolate does make you feel good, scientifically it has been proven to slow brain waves. What does that mean for you? Most of the time our brains operate at a frequency called beta waves. When brain activity slows to alpha waves we feel calm and alert. Bring on the chocolate after that stress-filled, two-hour commute!
4. While we know the yummy benefits to eating chocolate, is it true that chocolate could indirectly help the environment?

Answer: Yes

Cocoa trees have traditionally been found under the canopy of the rainforests. Chocolate companies have, over time, tried to mimic this growing the cocoa trees in plantations to increase production. But recently, studies have found that cocoa beans produced in the rainforest are far superior to these "home-grown" versions. Because of this, some chocolate manufacturers have begun campaigning to save the rainforest. Now that's an environmental cause to support!
5. When you have your morning cup of joe, do you realize that you are taking in anywhere between 60 and 90 milligrams of caffeine? What if you decided to forgo that coffee for a 2 ounce chocolate bar? How much caffeine would you find?

Answer: 38 milligrams

So, phooey on all those who say chocolate is high in caffeine! Did you also know that chocolate contains other forms of weaker stimulants such as theobromine? Theobromine has been found to be a muscle relaxant, and it can help, in a mild way, to lower blood pressure. By the way, it is theobromine in chocolate that makes it dangerous for dogs and cats to eat.
6. Chocolate and cocoa contain, perhaps, more minerals than any other food. Of specific minerals, the food analysis tables have found that cocoa contains more of this mineral than any other vegetable.

Answer: iron

Cocoa is also an excellent source of potassium, phosphorus, zinc, copper, and manganese.
7. Of course, there is a downside to every good story. Is it true that chocolate is high in sodium?

Answer: No

Luckily, this is false. Not only is chocolate low in sodium, it is high in potassium, which is important in keeping the body's level of sodium down.
8. We've all heard the same story over and over again: "Don't eat that chocolate, you'll get fat!" But, is it true? Will chocolate make you fat? If we were to have a 2 ounce bar of chocolate, how much of our caloric intake would that be?

Answer: 7 to 14 percent

So, if you have only that one chocolate bar a day, that's a lot of calories (about 200) but still fewer calories than if we have a handful of peanuts or several cookies. One of the big differences being that chocolate is satiating- you feel full after consuming some.

However, cookies are primarily carbohydrates, which trigger insulin production in the body. This in turn causes you to feel hungry again after a short period. Thus, you may eat more than you intended.
9. Sugar. Alright, you have me there. Chocolate does contain sugar, a lot of it. But is it true that chocolate is lower on the glycemic index than sugar by itself?

Answer: Yes

The glycemic index rates how quickly sugar is released into the bloodstream, and thus how easily it is utilized by the body as energy. Any number below 50 on the index is considered good because the body will utilize that glucose being released. Milk chocolate has a G.I. of 45.
10. I'm sure all this talk of chocolate has made you a little hungry for some. Go ahead! Remember, chocolate is good for you. Oh, but wait! When you buy that chocolate, check out the contents information. Which of these products do you want to avoid in a chocolate bar?

Answer: vegetable oil

Whenever the product contains vegetable oils you want to beware. Many vegetable oils contain trans-fatty acids, which have been linked to all sorts of health concerns. Well, enjoy that chocolate bar. I think I'll head off to get one myself. All information for this quiz came from Dr. John Ashton and Suzy Ashton's book "A Chocolate a Day Keeps the Doctor Away".
