Austin J40 Trivia Trivia Quiz

I think this is the first J40 quiz on Funtrivia. Hope you enjoy it! The Austin J40 was produced in Britain in the 1950s/60s and was one of the most sought after toys. It looked like a real car and was driven by pedalling. It was produced for children.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Austin J40 may have been the final design, but what was the name of the original prototype?

Answer: Joy 1

Joy 1 was the first of the breed, even though it looks very different from the later J40. This car did, however, have similar features e.g. the horn, lights and opening bonnet etc. The car was made from pressed steel.
2. Who designed the J40?

Answer: Alfred Ash

Alfred Ash designed the car, and his daughter actually tested it to see how well it pedalled up slopes and down hills. Alfred wanted the car to be very realistic, so he featured an opening bonnet and engine, opening boot, working lights and horn and a realistic dashboard.
3. The Austin J40 was the first Austin pedalcar.

Answer: False

The Austin Pathfinder pedal car (modelled on an Austin 7 racing car) had been produced since 1949. The Austin J40 didn't come into production until the early/mid 1950s. It is not the only pedalcar, many hundreds of other models have been produced. But the J40 is remembered because of its class, beauty and brilliant build quality.
4. What car was the Austin J40 based on?

Answer: Austin A40

When you look at the two cars, from the front at least, they are almost identically styled. Austin wanted the J40 to be sold to boys so they could 'be like dad' as well as to boost A40 sales.
5. Austin J40 owners have their own club.

Answer: True

The club was set up in the mid 1970s, and holds an annual rally every year. I have the privilage of being a member, and have been since I was two years old and my father first bought me a J40!
6. Which group of workers built the Austin J40s and Pathfinders?

Answer: Redundant Welsh Miners

Welsh miners who became ill from breathing the fumes were given the job of building the cars. Their quick and skilled work allowed rapid production. The initial Austin plan was for the workers to work with offcuts, but the miners were just too fast and Austin realised this would be mass production.
7. A J40 starred in the film "One Good Turn" in 1955, along with which comedian?

Answer: Norman Wisdom

The film was very popular, and proved to be a great sales boost for the J40 brand. The highlight comes near the end when Norman finally purchases the car and is chased by police who think he has stolen it. Unfortunately the car ends up crashing into some roadworks!
8. Roughly how many Austin J40s were produced in total?

Answer: 32,000

Out of these 32,000, less than half are believed to currently survive and mint specimens are very rare. Even today, people mistake these classic toys for junk and scrap them.
9. Which year did Austin J40 production end?

Answer: 1971

Production of Austin pedal cars lasted for an incredible 22 years! As time went on, Austin employed workers from other backgrounds, not just Welsh miners.
10. Approximately how much was an Austin J40 retailing for when it was first sold in the 1950s?

Answer: £20

Remember, this is £20 in the 1950s. An Austin J40 in good condition can now be worth up to £2000! Even one in bad condition will be £700-£800.
