Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What did the acronym "MUD" originally stand for?

Answer: Multi-User Dungeon

The first MUD refered to Multi-User Dungeon, named after Dungeon, an early single-player text adventure game. Some later used Multi-User Dimension and Multi-User Domain as variants of the term.
2. One of the earliest muds is called DikuMUD. The DikuMUD family is extensive and hundreds of games have been derived from it. What language are most Diku-derived muds written in?

Answer: C

While muds have been written in various programming language, Diku and most of its derivatives were written in C.
3. After Diku, there came Merc, from which many of Diku's derivatives spring from. Which of these was one of the original coders for Merc?

Answer: Hatchet

KaVir created GodWars, Thoric created SMAUG, and SaGe created Lords of War, a GodWars derivative.
4. One popular Diku-derivative descended from Merc is known as SMAUG. What does the term SMAUG stand for?

Answer: Simulated Medieval Adventure multi-User Game

SMAUG was created by Thoric and his team of coders. The home mud for SMAUG is Realms of Despair, one of the largest muds in existance, with an average of 300-600 players on at any given time.
5. Another popular codebase derived from Merc is called GodWars. What is the primary goal of a GodWars mud?

Answer: Player-killing

GodWars, originally created by KaVir, is a highly popular PK mud codebase. Dozens of GodWars muds exist, and numerous variations, such as Lords of War and Dystopia, have been derived from it.
6. Aside from the extensive Diku family, there are also a number of LPMuds in existance. What is the primary difference between an LPMud and a Diku-derivative?

Answer: It has a separate driver and mudlib.

LPMuds have a separate driver and mudlib, that is, the program that runs the mud is separate from the world. Many Diku-derivatives as well as LP drivers and mudlibs are available to the public to download for free, and many Diku-derivatives are also sci-fi based.
7. Another type of mud, very different from Diku-based muds, is called MUSH, primarily focused on roleplaying and social interation. What does MUSH stand for?

Answer: Multi-User Shared Hallucination

Other sorts of muds on a similar line are called MOOs, MUCKs, etc. From this springs a long-running debate over the proper term for online text games. Some prefer the historical "MUD", while others invent acronyms like "MU*" or claim that MUD really stands for Multi-User Domain, and thus can be applied to all types.
8. According to Richard Bartle, there are four types of personalities mud players exhibit. Which of these is not one of those types?

Answer: Munchkins

The four types of mud players are Killer, Explorer, Socializer, and Achiever. Most players exhibit traits of one or more of these classifications. Many Achievers might also be called Munchkins, for their tendancy to try to be the best no matter what. Killers are generally interested in competition and player combat. Explorers enjoy exploring a vast world and discovering its secrets. Socializers like chatting and social interaction, and are often attracted to roleplaying.
9. As well as text-based games, a number of graphical muds also have come into existence. Which of the following is not considered a graphical mud?

Answer: Utopia

Utopia is a web-based game, which are unrelated to real-time muds. Graphical muds are often called MMORPGs. This term is said to have come about to distinguish the graphical games from text-based games, the original creators thinking that not many would have heard of muds.

Many in the mudding community refer to the term "MMORPG" as "alphabet soup", and prefer the term "graphical mud" as being clearer.
10. Lastly, returning where it all began. The first mud was created in 1979, by Roy Trubshaw and Richard Bartle. The computers of what university was this game run on?

Answer: Essex

MUD was created at Essex University, in the UK. It went through numerous versions before a workable game was created, and resources were at a premium back then. Today, hundreds of muds exist all over the world in many languages and themes.
