Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A leopard cannot change its

Answer: spots

Men cannot change their characters.
2. A watched pot never

Answer: boils

The proverb does not refer to a pot that boils over but to a pot that seems extremely slow to boil because we are watching it impatiently.
3. Barking dogs seldom

Answer: bite

Of many people it can be said that their bark is worse than their bite. They may threaten in a loud voice, but they are reluctant to take real action.
4. Don't bite the hand that

Answer: feeds you

The other sayings are: "Don't kill the goose that lays the golden eggs", and "The hand that rocks the cradle (Mum) rules the world".
It would be unwise to harm your benefactors, as you might fall from grace.
5. Everybody wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to

Answer: die

Even those who suffer from old age and sickness, tend to try to stretch their -unhappy - lives. This proverb does not take into account the phenomenon of euthanasy or euthanasia.
6. Home is where

Answer: the heart is

Home normally is where your beloved is, where you enjoy yourself etc.
For couch-potatoes and cyberaddicts this proverb may require a slight adaptation: home is where their TV-set, computer, etc. is. But that is not what traditional wisdom calls "home".
7. If you cannot stand the heat get out of the

Answer: kitchen

Common sense advice of U.S.A. origin: if you are afraid of rising tempers and loud words, you better stay away from places where heated discussions and hot brawls may develop.
8. If God had meant us to fly he would have given us

Answer: wings

It's rather untypical of man to try and be satisfied with how things were
when God created them. As Pascal said, most miseries that befall man are caused by his restlessness and his inability to 'sit still'.
If humans had accepted the 'wisdom' of this proverb, there would have been no inventors, no Edisons and no Leonardos.
9. Good fences make

Answer: good neighbours

There is another version of this proverb: "A hedge between keeps friendship green." Clear rules about what belongs to whom, may help to prevent quarrels that might spoil the good relations.
10. Man does not live by

Answer: bread alone

This phrase is from the Bible: Deuteronomy viii.3. Also to be found in Matthew iv.4. The idea being that to live well man needs more than just material things. In the views of the Bible, faith and spiritual values are as necessary for a healthy and sane life as "bread".
