Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which duet by Sky and Sarah was cut from the film?

Answer: I've Never Been In Love Before

It's an outrage! The most beautiful song in the whole show (or I think so, anyway), and it was removed. Apparently that's because Marlon Brando's voice was too weak to do it justice.
2. Which song replaced 'Never Been In Love Before' in the film?

Answer: Woman in Love

I don't know how to feel about this song. On the one hand, it replaced 'Never Been In Love Before', which immediately puts me off it, but on the other hand, it's quite a nice song in its own right. And it got rid of 'My Time Of Day', so it can't be all bad!
3. In 'Fugue For Tinhorns', what does Nicely-Nicely Johnson tell us "this X" means?

Answer: the horse likes mud

These are all lines from the song, apart from "the horse won't run", which I made up. Rusty Charlie mentions the horse showing class, and Benny Southstreet comes out with the line "This guy says the horse has chance". Twice.
4. Vivian Blaine's rendition of 'Sue Me' in the 1955 film of 'Guys and Dolls' caused a rift between herself and Frank Loesser that was never healed.

Answer: False

Actually, it was Frank Sinatra's crooning of this that Loesser didn't like. Personally, I can't see what was wrong with it. (Thanks to Alex Barris' article on the Globe and Mail website for this information.)
5. In the first scene of the show, we find out that Nathan and Adelaide have been engaged for 14 years, but which song mentions this fact later on?

Answer: Adelaide's Lament

It comes up in the line "Then they get off at Saratoga for the fourteenth time". Because of her thinking she's being taken out for an anniversary trip, you see?
6. What does Sky say is the only thing to have been in more hotels than him?

Answer: the Gideon Bible

It's in the scene when he tells Sarah that the Bible quotation she has on her desk is attributed to the wrong part.
7. What is Sky's end of the bargain with Sarah, in return for which she will have dinner with him?

Answer: To provide the Mission with sinners

OK, so marrying her wasn't a very likely answer, but I ran out of ideas. He actually ends up doing all four, but providing sinners is the only one he plans.
8. What is the name of the restaurant that Sky takes Sarah to?

Answer: El Cafe Cubano, Havana

Not a very hard one, I hope. I couldn't actually think of many places from the show that could be restaurants, and I'm not good at making them up, so that probably made it easy, even if you didn't know the answer.
9. What drink does Sky give to Sarah in Havana without her knowing it?

Answer: rum

He orders two 'Dulce de Leche', a strong alcoholic drink, but tells her it's a milkshake. I can't work out whether that makes her sweet and innocent, or just stupid.
10. In the Hot Box, Nathan finds out that Adelaide has told her mother that they are married with children. How many children?

Answer: 5

And they apparently have another one on the way.
11. Which character interrupts Nathan's conversation with Adelaide to ask if there is any news on the craps game's potential location?

Answer: Harry the Horse

In an attempt to hide the truth of what he is doing from Adelaide, Nathan tells her that Harry was asking if his wife had given birth. When Adelaide asks why Harry was asking him, Nathan responds with the classic line: "He's nervous, it's his first wife!"
12. Do we ever discover Adelaide's maiden name before she becomes Mrs Nathan Detroit?

Answer: No

For the whole show, she is only ever called Miss Adelaide. Or just Adelaide, obviously.
13. In the film of 'Guys and Dolls', Arvide Abernathy is made Sarah's uncle. What relation is he to her usually?

Answer: Grandfather

I should know this one. My first (and last!) public singing appearance was playing Arvide in a school production in November 2002.
14. Which character sings about his dreams in the Mission?

Answer: Nicely-Nicely Johnson

It was Nicely, in the outstanding song, 'Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat'. The guy who played this in the version I was in was absolutely fantastic! And I'm not just saying that because he's one of my best friends, he really was brilliant.
15. General Cartwright is only ever referred to as 'General', but what is her Christian name?

Answer: Matilda

It took a lot of reasearch to find this answer! Mimi is actually a Hot Box dancer, and Agatha and Martha are members of the Mission band.
