Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nothing can compare to this.

Answer: Nonpareil

Someone or something which is without equal can be called a nonpareil. It usually implies better than average.
An early American railroad locomotive was named "Nonpareil", while an earlier British one was called "Sans Pareil" and participated in the famous Rainbow Trials which was won by Stephenson's "Rocket".
In old printing terminology, nonpareil was a printing type bigger than ruby but smaller than emerald.
2. This clue is not enough!

Answer: Nonage

Nonage is defined as a minority; that is, not enough for a majority.
It does not mean what you are in when you have passed your eighties.
3. This has two meanings. At present, there's no word for it.

Answer: Nonce

A casual term for the present, the nonce is perhaps a corruption of the phrase "then once", and can also refer to a current task, or present purpose.
A "nonce-word" refers to a made-up word to describe something for which no word yet exists.
4. Just a nobody, or nothing at all.

Answer: Nonentity

Strictly speaking a nonentity is something that does not exist. It is usually used in a disparaging way to refer to a person of no importance.
5. Confused on ten performers, but one fewer.

Answer: Nonet

A crossword type clue, in this case a simple anagram of "on ten".
A nonet is a composition in music for nine performers, voices, or instruments.
It is also a nine line poem in which the first line has nine syllables, the second eight, and so on down to one syllable in the last line.
6. Baffle by nothing, or less.

Answer: Nonplus

Usually used as a verb, to nonplus is to puzzle or baffle. To be nonplussed is to be puzzled by something, usually in a surprising way.
The word can also be used as a noun. A nonplus is an insuperable difficulty, a baffling situation.
7. I can't tell you much about this, I'm afraid.

Answer: Nondescript

Strictly speaking, if something, or someone, is nondescript, it cannot be described. Usually somebody nondescript is a person who is ordinary, or cannot be distinguished from the general population. Or something that has no outstanding feature.
8. All Romans had such a day each month.

Answer: Nones

You are probably familiar with "the ides of March", and know that it means the 15th of March. You may be less familiar with the complicated way Romans referred to dates. Roughly speaking, the kalends was the first day of the month, the nones about a quarter way through and the ides half way through.

There does not seem to be a word for three-quarters way through the month. The nones of March would be the 7th.
9. Figure in pain, on agonising lines.

Answer: Nonagon

A crossword type clue. ..in paiN ON AGONising..
A geometric figure, with nine sides is a nonagon. A regular nonagon, one with all its sides of equal length, has internal angles of 140 degrees. There is no way to construct a regular nonagon using ruler and compasses, even painfully.
10. You may or may not get this, I couldn't care less!

Answer: Nonchalant

Nonchalant means indifferent, or perhaps careless, or cool.
It is a word from the French, chalour meaning ardent, and should apparently be pronounced non-sha-lant. I didn't know that!
