Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sand, with lots of water?

Answer: Quartz

Quartz is a variety of mineral consisting of silicon dioxide (aka silica) SiO2.
It is found almost everywhere, the commonest form being sand. It also occurs in crystalline form as gemstones: agate, amethyst, aventurine, bloodstone, cairngorm, carnelian, chrysoprase, citrine, onyx, rock crystal, rose quartz and tigereye are all forms of quartz.
The water part of the clue is of course because the word quarts is pronounced the same way as quartz.
2. Argue over a missile?

Answer: Quarrel

To quarrel or argue is pretty obvious.
A quarrel is an arrow made without barbs so that it may easily be extricated from the stricken quarry. The bolts fired by crossbows are usually quarrels. The name is also given to a diamond-shaped pane in a leaded window.
3. One religious but afraid?

Answer: Quaker

The Society of Friends - colloquially known as Quakers - is a religious organisation, founded in England in the 17th century as an extreme form of Puritanism. A chief tenet was a denial of the need for special buildings and a hierarchy of ministers. Originally, from its foundation in the 1640s the word "quakers" was used derisively, but nowadays it has no contemptuous significance.
To quake is to tremble, the kind of thing you do when you are very afraid.
4. Either under a third of a quatorzain, or 80%.

Answer: Quatrain

Four lines of verse make up a quatrain. See the answer to quatorzain for a description.
The word quatorzain has ten letters. Removing o and z the remaining 8 spell quatrain.
5. Mary, a Pole?

Answer: Quant

Mary Quant is a famous name in fashion - at least in the UK.
A quant pole is used to propel a barge, or a sailing boat when the wind is adverse or insufficient. It has a wavy end to aid in dealing with muddy bottoms. Similar to a punt pole, and used the same way - dig it in and walk along the deck, taking care to extract the pole before walking off the stern.
6. Sized paper?

Answer: Quarto

A quarto book - with pages the same size, obviously - is roughly the size and shape of modern A4, perhaps a little wider. The name derives from the old method of printing where a large printed page was folded twice - thus into quarters - before binding. The pun is that size is a substance applied to paper to aid its glazing.
7. What you seek may just be rock.

Answer: Quarry

The object of a hunt is the quarry. If what you want is a piece of rock, the place you would go to would be a quarry.
8. Note: not necessarily tremulous.

Answer: Quaver

To quaver is to wobble, hesitate tremulously, etc.
A quaver, also known in America as an eighth note, is the name of a note in music.
Breve: double note
Semibreve: whole note
Minim: half note
Crochet: quarter note
Quaver: eighth note
Semi-quaver: sixteenth note.
9. Shakespeare's favoured verse form?

Answer: Quatorzain

A poem of 14 lines, consisting of four quatrains of alternate rhyme, not repeated in successive quatrains, closing with a couplet. Due to a misapprehension in the 16th century, Plutarch's poems in Italian were called quatorzains, while those of Shakespeare and others were wrongly called sonnets.

The reverse is true. The poems of Plutarch are actually sonnets, while Shakespeare's sonnets are really quatorzains. Confused?
10. This is curious!

Answer: Quaint

Definitions and synonyms of quaint are: odd, curious and fanciful, whimsical, singular. Poe's "The Raven" starts
"Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,"
