Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I've haddock enough of this plaice! Which of these aquatic creatures lost an eye while trying to escape the zoo through the underwater drains?

Answer: Fsh

The punny piscine trying to escape the zoo lost an eye (letter "i") and changed from a "fish" to a "fsh".

There are many fish related puns, including the well known "You can tune a guitar, but you can't tuna fish. Unless of course, you play bass." If you can think of a punnier fish pun, let minnow!
2. Zookeepers were out combing the area for which of these mammals?

Answer: Hares

Bugs Punny tunnelled through the soil looking for an escape root, trying to get away from the zookeepers who were combing the area for hares (hairs).

Hares and rabbits tend to lead a hoppy life until you drop hot water into their hole. They then turn into a hot cross punny!
3. What did the buffalo say when his male offspring escaped the zoo?

Answer: Bison

The buffalo said "bison" (goodbye son) as his male offspring escaped from the zoo.

The young bison was on his way to Moo York to watch the moo-vies when he heard about a farmer who got attacked by his cattle. The farmer milked the story for all it was worth! The same farmer recently won a Nobel prize for the two cows who were outstanding in their field. Pull the udder one!
4. The flamingo heard it was raining cats and dogs and asked how many of their flock were allowed to escape on the ark. What was the answer?

Answer: Toucan

If you have read the Book of Genesis 6:19 in the KJV version, you will know that "of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark". The flamingo were rightly told that only two of their flock can (two can - toucan) enter the ark.

Finding bird puns is nothing to crow about but it is a pheasant way to spend an evening without ruffling any feathers.
5. Which animal was called in to quill the uprising at the zoo?

Answer: Porcupine

In this punny pun, the word "quill" is a misspelling of the word "quell". By quelling something you are putting a stop to it, usually by suppression or force. A quill is the sharpened spine of a porcupine or hedgehog.

I'll hedge my bets that porcupines are pretty sharp when they tell jokes, so here goes! Question: What sound do porcupines make when they kiss? Answer: Ouch!
6. It was a gamble, but zookeepers found which type of animal after searching a nearby casino?

Answer: Cheetah

Casinos are a place where people addicted to gambling can easily become cheaters (cheetahs), sometimes by using tricks up their sleeve, card marking or being in collusion with another player.

The chips were down when a card shark was arrested for hiding an ace up his sleeve. He was dealt with by the police. Meanwhile, a cow tried to steal some chips for his dinner but the steaks were too high!
7. Who volunteered to fill the elephant's trunk before placing their own luggage on the back of an aeroplane at Jorge Chavez International Airport?

Answer: Alpaca

Jorge Chavez International Airport is in Peru, the country which is home to the mountain loving alpaca and llama. As the elephant escaped the zoo, the animal who offered to fill his trunk (luggage) was the alpaca (I'll pack a).

So before we travel towards Tibet to meet the Dalai Llama, alpaca tent, alpaca picnic, alpaca my bags and alpaca torch in case it gets dark.
8. What type of animal escaped to the mountains and made money by selling French fries at a monastery?

Answer: Chipmunk

The word chipmunk has been taken out of context in relation to this pun. "Chip" is another word for French fries, and "munk" is a misspelling of the word monk, a religious man who usually lives in a monastery.

Vegetable puns are very a-peeling! The beet was in a pickle because he couldn't keep a secret on his vegetable patch. The potatoes have eyes, the corn has ears, and the beans stalk. Peas lettuce know of any other vegetable puns as I yam not very good at them.
9. After travelling all day and all night, which animal stopped to ask for a glass of water because he was thirsty?

Answer: A little horse

The little horse asked for a drink of water as he felt a little hoarse; a punny play on words.

It turned out the horse was thirsty because he had a nasty colt. He was sent to the sick bay where he was given some cough stirrup to make him feel stable. It was the last straw when he got hay fever which was giving him nightmares.
10. After all the animals returned safely back to the zoo, which of them became a famous television star after appearing on an Asian talk show?

Answer: Yak

A yak is the name given to somebody who talks a lot, somebody who would do well appearing on a chat show. A yak is also the name given to a Tibetan mammal.

When all the animals realised it was feeding time, they quickly returned back to the zoo to get their dinner. The giraffes were racing neck and neck, the sheep stopped bleating around the bush, and the laughing hyena thought it was all very emusing. Even the nocturnal creatures returned right off the bat and owl by themselves. And as night drew to a close, the pun-guins were the last to return to the zoo. They said they didn't leave on porpoise...but that's the sealiest thing I've heard!
