Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. John Reed abused Jane Eyre when she was small, but the guilt was always hers. What room was she locked in after one of those incidents described in the book?

Answer: Red room

John Reed was the son of Jane's aunt and he was allowed to do whatever he wanted to. Nobody ever suspected him of any faults and Jane was largely unliked in the house. It was the room where her uncle Mr. Reed died and she was afraid that there was a ghost in there.
2. Who in Gateshead Hall was the nicest to Jane?

Answer: Bessie

Eliza, Georgiana, and John Reed were the children of Mrs. Reed and either ignored or abused Jane. Miss Abbot and Bessie were the servants in the house and while Miss Abbot was bitter, Bessie told the children stories and sang to them. She took care of Jane after she became sick in the Red room.
3. Did Jane want to go to school?

Answer: Yes

Jane was very unhappy in the Gateshead Hall and she wanted to go to school after Mr. Lloyd, the apothecary, gave her that idea. He also promised to talk to Mrs. Reed about that.
4. How does Mr. Brocklehurst, the treasurer of Lowood, humiliate Jane?

Answer: He tells the whole school that Jane is a liar

Mr. Brocklehurst describes Mrs. Reed as a 'pious and charitable lady' who told him that Jane is a liar. Fortunately, Mr. Brockleburst was very unliked in the school and many students pitied Jane. Also, Ms. Temple talks to Jane and writes a letter to Mr. Lloyd and finds out the truth and later on tells in front of the whole school that Mr. Brocklehurst's accusations were false.
5. After finishing Lowood school, Jane stays there as a teacher for two more years. What makes her look for another employment?

Answer: Ms. Temple gets married and goes away

After Ms. Temple left, Lowood did not seem like home to Jane anymore and she decided it would be nice to have a new servitude. It is also fortunate that Mrs. Fairfax promises a salary twice as much as Jane's current one.
6. True or false: On the road where Mr. Rochester and Jane meet, Jane knows who Mr. Rochester is before he finds out that she is the governess in the house.

Answer: False

Jane did not know that she helped Mr. Rochester until she returned home and learned that the master of the house returned and made the connection.
7. What would be the best description of Mr. Rochester?

Answer: Ugly and cynical

At their first meeting, Mr. Rochester asks Jane if she finds him good looking and her answer is a definite 'no'. It can be gathered that he is cynical from the way he tells Jane about his life.
8. Right after Mr. Rochester proposes to Jane, what is one question she asks him?

Answer: Why was he pretending that he was going to marry Blanche Ingram?

Mr. Rochester was very relieved that it was such a simple question and told her that he was trying to see if she loved him and if she were jealous of the thought that he will marry another woman.
9. Ironically, who were Mary, Diana, and St.John Rivers that helped Jane when she was without any money or place to go?

Answer: Her cousins

They were her cousins because their mother's name was Eyre and she was Jane's father's sister. When she received the fortune from her dead uncle, she divided it in four parts between her cousins and herself.
10. What job did St. John find for Jane after she was taken in?

Answer: A teacher

She became a mistress of the school for girls that Miss Oliver opened and taught many girls from the village and farms nearby. She became a favourite in the village.
11. True or false: St. John spent some of his time teaching in a charity school.

Answer: True

At the school where Jane became a teacher, St. John spent an hour every day and taught religion. It was also the time when Miss Oliver came to see St. John and it became apparent that he liked her and she liked him.
12. How did St. John find out that Jane Elliott, the name Jane took after running away from Thornfield, was actually Jane Eyre?

Answer: He saw her name written on a piece of paper on her desk

'What he suddenly saw on this blank paper, it was impossible for me to tell: but something had caught his eye. He took it up with a snatch; he looked at the edge; then shot a glance at me, inexpressibly peculiar...'
13. What does St. John Rivers propose to Jane?

Answer: To marry him and go to India together

However, Jane feels that he does not really love her and she does not love him and the idea of marriage is disgusting to her. She tells that she can go there as his sister, but he does not feel it is appropriate.
14. What happens to Thornfield Hall by the end of the book?

Answer: There is a fire

Mr. Rochester's lunatic wife gets out of her room and sets the house on fire. Mr. Rochester saves all the servants and tried to save Mrs. Rochester, but she jumps from the roof and he is crippled in the fire. Mr. Rochester loses his hand and one of his eyes. The other eye becomes blind.
15. Did Jane eventually marry Mr. Rochester?

Answer: Yes

Jane marries him soon after finding him at Ferndean. Later on Mr. Rochester restores the vision in one of his eyes and by the time they have the first child he is able to see. Mary and Diana marry well and visit each other and Jane every year. St. John Rivers goes to India and writes very rarely.
