Allusion in Anne Rice's "Vampire Chronicles" Quiz

Anne Rice is (in my opinion) one of the best American contemporary authors. Like any other literary works, Ms. Rice's novels are full of allusions to literature, music and art. These questions are from all ten of the "Vampire Chronicles".

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Interview with the Vampire" Louis says that Lestat dragged him to this Shakespearean tragedy many and many times.

Answer: Macbeth

"Macbeth" was Lestat's favorite play during their time together at the flat on the Rue Royale. He enjoyed frightening unsuspecting mortals by quoting "Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow!"
2. In "The Vampire Lestat", Lestat makes a direct reference to the modern movie "Apocalypse Now" (1979). In doing so he also indirectly refers to this story, on which the movie is based.

Answer: "The Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad

In this book, a British sailor named Marlowe journeys up the Congo River into the heart of Africa to meet a man named Kurtz, a man everyone has assured him is much like himself. Upon coming face to face with Kurtz, Marlowe finds that the man has given himself over to the darkness of murderous tyranny.

The movie tells the same story, moving the setting from Africa to the Vietnam War. Just like Marlowe, Lestat is also concerned with his own possible fall into the heart of darkness.
3. What literary character is Lestat paraphrasing in "The Queen of the Damned" when he says "I don't know whether I'm the hero or the victim of this tale" ?

Answer: David Copperfield

Anne Rice is a great admirer of Charles Dickens and mentions his works not only in "The Queen of the Damned" but also in the "Interview with the Vampire" movie and in "The Witching Hour" amongst others.
4. "The Tale of the Body Thief" is full of allusions! Which author is not alluded to in this work?

Answer: Charles Dickens

Lestat is reminded of William Blake's poem "The Tyger" when he reads the mind of David Talbot and sees his memory of slaying a menancing tiger. In Amsterdam, Lestat sees David reading Goethe's "Faust" and compares the tale to Talbot's own struggle against death and old age. H.P Lovecraft's short story "The Thing on the Doorstep" is furtively given to Lestat by Raglan James. Appropriately, the story is about body theft...
5. In "Memnoch the Devil" Roger, Lestat's druglord victim is attracted to this style of art.

Answer: Spanish Baroque

Although Roger was an aficionado of many types of religious art, he had a special liking for the ornate and passionate Spanish Baroque style.
6. What work of art is the newly made vampire Amadeo describing in "The Vampire Armand" : "Once more I heard the horses' hooves on the soft earth, and the shuffle of booted feet...I saw the proud Prince Lorenzo, astride on his mount, turn his youthful head, just as my Father had done, and look at me."?

Answer: The Procession of the Magi

Marius painted his own version of Benozzo Gozzoli's great work on the walls of his private salons. He also made copies of other "mortal" painters he admired like Giotto, Fra Angelico, and Bellini.
7. In "Merrick" Louis says "The Everlasting has not fixed his canon against my self-slaughter." Which British author is he paraphrasing?

Answer: William Shakespeare

All of Anne's vampires seem to be aficionados of the Bard of Avon. This quote is uttered by Hamlet in his first soliloquy (Act One, scene two). "Hamlet" is one of Louis's favorite Shakespeare plays, as the questions that Hamlet poses about life and death are similar to the thoughts that also haunt Louis.
8. In "Blood and Gold," Marius says "Gazing into her oval eyes, I stepped into the paintings of Botticelli." Of whom is he speaking?

Answer: Bianca

A courtesan of Renaissance Venice, Bianca Solderini was Marius's consort for much of the sixteenth and seventh centuries. Amadeo was also described as looking like the young Mercury from Botticelli's "La Primavera".
9. In "Blackwood Farm," Quinn refers to himself as Mona's "Noble Abelard." In the story of Abelard and Heloise, what was Abelard's fate?

Answer: he is castrated

Peter Abelard (1079-1142) was a French philosopher, considered one of the greatest thinkers of the 12th century. Among his works is "Sic et Non," a list of 158 philosophical and theological questions. His teachings were controversial, and he was repeatedly charged with heresy.

His love letters to Heloise are some of the most famous in history. Quinn was attracted to the star-crossed lovers because it reminded him of his own forbidden affair with Mona.
10. In "Blood Canticle," Lestat is fascinated by what recently canonized saint?

Answer: Saint Juan Diego

Saint Juan Diego was a sixteenth-century Mexican peasant of Indian blood. He was visited by the Blessed Virgin Mary and is widely revered in the Latin American world today. Nuestra Dama de Guadalupe, as the visitation of the Virgin Mary is called, is the patroness of Mexico.
