Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before Kinsey became a PI, how was she employed?

Answer: Santa Teresa policewoman

"I must have had vague, idealistic notions of law and order, the good guys versus the bad, with occasional court appearance in which I'd be asked to testify as to which was which. In my view, the bad guys would go to jail, thus making is safe for the rest of us to carry on. After a while, I realized how naive I was..."
2. Within the first chapter we meet Kinsey's new client. What is her name?

Answer: Beverly Danziger

After "breezing" into Kinsey's office, she surveys Mrs. Danziger. "She was in her late thirties by my guess; petite, energetic, well groomed."
3. The client hires Kinsey, at $30.00 an hour plus expenses, to do what?

Answer: locate her sister

Kinsey can't believe that Beverly wants to pay her $30.00 to simply locate her sister. But, she says "... I feel I have already devoted quite enough time to this ... I fully intend to have the estate reimburse me out of Elaine's share since she caused all this trouble to begin with ... "
4. When Kinsey calls the Boca Raton condominiums, what does the super say?

Answer: Elaine never came that year

Mr. Makowski quickly tells Kinsey that Elaine just didn't show up. Instead, a friend of Elaine's was subletting the condo. Of course, subletting is not allowed, according to the condominium bylaws ... the plot thickens ... !
5. In Chapter 2, Kinsey find a photo of the missing woman and "Marty." What piece of clothing does Marty envy so much?

Answer: a $12,000 fur coat

According to Tillie, "... Marty used to get a little snippy about Elaine's attitude ... that fur coat of hers is case in point. She knew Leonard and Marty were in financial straits, but she'd wear the coat over there to play bridge." When she was last seen, Elaine was wearing that fur coat, with its matching turban.
6. When Pat Usher answers the door, her face is all bruised and bandaged. What is her reasoning for this?

Answer: she was in a car accident

Pat says that she just was in a car accident and didn't like people to see her like that. However, later in the book, we learn that she had had plastic surgery done so that people wouldn't recognize her to be Marty Grice.
7. When Kinsey calls Mrs. Ochsner, they set up a time to meet. We learn a lot of fun stuff about Kinsey while they introduce themselves. For one thing, Kinsey has hazel eyes. What is so special about her hairstyle?

Answer: she does it herself every 6 weeks with nail scissors

Mrs. Ochsner says to her, "You don't look at all like you sounded on the phone ... what do you call that haircut?" Kinsey replies, "I don't call it anything. I do that myself with nail scissors every six weeks. I keep my hair short because I don't like to fool with it."
8. What happened to Tillie that she called Kinsey at 2am?

Answer: a hissing woman tore up her apartment

A woman broke into Tillie's apartment and tore up the place, leaving it looking like a tornado had come and gone. Tillie told the police and Kinsey, "I woke up and saw this woman standing in the door to my room. My God, I thought my heart would stop. I couldn't even move I was so terrified. And then ... and then, she started ... it was like this hissing sound and she ran in the living room and started tearing everything up..."
9. By Chapter 6, Kinsey has been fired and re-hired for the same case. Who is her new client?

Answer: Julia Ochsner

Kinsey has to tell Julia that Beverly fired her and Julia doesn't like that news. So, she hires Kinsey herself. She is having a great time helping Kinsey and she wants to know what happend to Elaine. She tells Kinsey, "I'm having the time of my life! Just tell me what to do next!"
10. Vera Lipton makes her debut in this book - she is one of Kinsey's only "friends." They both work at California Fidelity insurance company. How does Vera describe men?

Answer: alike to Whitman Samplers

Kinsey admires Vera's ability to be beautiful without much effort. She chain smokes and drinks too many Cokes, but yet men can't keep their hands off of her! As she says, "I figure guys are like Whitman's Samplers. I like to take a little bite out of each and then move on before the whole box gets stale."
11. Gradually Kinsey is learning that a murder/arson was related to the crime in which she is investigating. Who was allegedly killed and whose home was destroyed by this arson?

Answer: Leonard and Marty's home; Marty was allegedly killed

According to the newpaper report, Marty was "bludgenoned to death during an apparent burglary in her westside residence ... was struck repeatedly with a blunt instrument and doused with flammable liquid."
12. What is the name of the Santa Teresa police officer who helps Kinsey gain access to police files of this fire?

Answer: Jonah Robb

Kinsey first meets Jonah in this book, and he becomes an intricate mess in her life from this point on. Jonah has an on again-off again relationship with his wife, Camilla, and during the "off again" times, he and Kinsey become involved in more than just detective work!
13. What kind of credit card did Elaine always use to buy her travel tickets, according to her travel agent, Lupe?

Answer: American Express

Kinsey went to Santa Teresa Travel after speaking with Beverly's husband. Elaine had been a customer of theirs for years, but strangely enough, the ticket that Kinsey had in her possession that supposedly belonged to Elaine was purchase at a ticket booth - something that she never did.
14. What realization does Kinsey make at the furrier?

Answer: someone stole Elaine's identity

After talking with the furier, Kinsey realizes that " ... someone's been borrowing Elaine Boldt's identity." She showed him the photograph of Elaine and Marty - neither of which he remembered as being the woman who sold him the coat.
15. Kinsey finally cracks this bizarre case - who is who and who killed who?

Answer: Elaine was killed by Marty Grice, who was disguised as Pat Usher

All said and done, this was a strange case - Elaine was killed and her body was set aflame to make identification impossible. She was killed by Marty, who then stole Elaine's identity and travelled to Florida. There, she changed her identity again to Pat Usher while her plastic surgery work healed. If she didn't have such a hot temper, she probably never would have been caught!
