Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The protagonist in this story is Nat Greco. What is her profession?

Answer: Assistant Law Professor

At the start of the story we find Nat teaching The History of Justice at Penn Law. She is coming up to her tenure year and is nervous about whether her tenure will be renewed.
2. The first scene is set by the use of an aphorism to explain how Nat felt at that time. What did Nat feel like?

Answer: an A cup in a double-D bra

Standing in a large auditorium to teach The History of Justice to only nine students would be rather disappointing, especially if you love the subject you're teaching (as I have found to my bemusement). Being a man, feeling like an A cup in a double-D bra is something I know nothing about.
3. "The Merchant of Venice" is used during the book as a teaching aid to explain a point of law. What does the tutor do to engage the students flagging interest in the point of law they are discussing?

Answer: act out the trial scene from "The Merchant of Venice"

Faced with little interest in her subject, and with the Vice Dean in attendance, Nat became desperate and co-opted the students and the Vice Dean into re-enacting the famous trial scene from "The Merchant of Venice". It was a great success.
4. Nat finds an ally in the department. What is his/her name?

Answer: Angus Holt

Angus is the faculty hunk who gives Nat support throughout the book. James McConnell is the dreaded Vice Dean, a man of bureaucratic mien, who tries to remove Nat from the university while the Dean is on holiday. Kyle Buford is a violent convict who attacks Nat later in the book. Tanisa Shields is a Corrections Officer and appears early in the story.
5. Nat is persuaded to go give a lecture on her favourite subject at a certain place critical to the story line. What kind of place was it?

Answer: Correction facility

Central to the book is Nat's visit to the Chester County Correction Facility. Angus had persuaded her to give her "Merchant of Venice" lecture to a class of inmates. It is at the beginning of the lecture that the events about to happen start to unfold.
6. Nat is attacked at this lecture. Who attacked her?

Answer: Kyle Buford

Kyle Buford and Pat Donnelly are new entrants into the class of inmates. Holt, whose class it is, did not know they had been enrolled into his class and is not happy about their inclusion. Buford viciously assaults Nat after a riot starts at the beginning of the class. Saunders is a Corrections Officer at the facility who ends up dead; the story then unfolds from his last words told to Nat.
7. Running for help, Nat finds the bodies of two men, one of them barely alive. She attempts CPR on him but he dies. What is the name of the man Nat does CPR on?

Answer: Ray Saunders

Nat, whilst fleeing from Buford, finds a CO in the room where Saunders is dying with a knife in his body. With him is a dead inmate. Milroy and Johnston are the troopers who question Nat about the attack by Buford and the circumstances surrounding Saunders' death.
8. Nat visits the dying man's wife Barbara who suffers from a medical complaint. What does Barbara suffer from?

Answer: Migraine

Nat visits Barbara to tell her what her husband's last words were. Barbara is perplexed by what Nat tells her because she hoped that they would have been words of love and support. They were not.
9. Because of Barbara's debilitating illness the visit is cut short and Nat has to go back a second time after the funeral. During the funeral something happens at Barbara's house. What happened?

Answer: it was burglarized

While the funeral was taking place the Saunders house was burglarized and a lot of damage was done to the furnishings in the house. When Nat hears of this she becomes suspicious and becomes determined to see Barbara again.
10. Barbara and Nat search the house and garage to make sense of Saunders' last words. What were his last words?

Answer: it's under the floor

Saunders has left something for his wife and his dying words are his way of communicating where it is. However this ambiguous statement is of no help to Barbara and Nat during their search of the house and so Nat has to go searching elsewhere for the truth.
