Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the novel, why does Mr. Percival Pyke Period hire Nicola Maitland-Mayne?

Answer: To type his etiquette book

Nicola is a typist for hire and Mr. Pyke Period hires her to type his etiquette book on antiquated manners. Mr. Pyke Period is very well aware that his views on etiquette are outdated but thinks people will read the book anyway. He is best known locally for his sympathy cards.
2. During a visit from his housemate Harold Cartell's sister and niece, which item of Mr. Pyke Period's was stolen?

Answer: A cigarette case

Mr. Pyke Period was showing off his expensive cigarette case to Cartell's sister Connie and her adopted ward Mary ("Moppett") and her boyfriend, Leonard. It is an open secret that Leonard is something of a petty criminal. Leonard and Moppett were looking at the cigarette case shortly before it disappeared. Mr. Pyke Period accused Leonard or Moppett of stealing it. Harold came to their defense and blamed the butler Alfred Belt.

However, privately Harold told his sister he thought it was either Moppett or Leonard who stole it.
3. Which character had a nasty row with Harold Cartell at the beginning of the novel?

Answer: Andrew Bantling

Harold was Andrew's stepfather, and one of the people in charge of Andrew's trust fund. Harold was formerly married to Andrew's mother Desiree, who is now married to Bimbo Dodds. Andrew had an idea of opening an art gallery, but Harold refused to let Andrew have the money for it despite the fact that the other guardians approved of the idea. Andrew and Harold had a nasty fight shortly before the visit from Connie and Moppett.
4. What did Leonard do that caused Harold Cartell to call the police on him?

Answer: Leonard used Cartell's name as a false reference to buy a sports car

After the cigarette case disappeared, Leonard went to purchase an expensive sports car and used Harold Cartell's name as a reference without his permission. Cartell was furious, as he would not have given Leonard a good reference. Not only that, he had only just met Leonard for the first time at lunch that afternoon.

This caused an argument between Harold and his sister Connie. Connie refused to believe Leonard or her ward Moppett would ever do anything even slightly illegal, despite their reputation.
5. Harold Cartell's body is found the morning after a wild party thrown by Lady Bantling and her husband Bimbo Dodds. Where is it discovered?

Answer: In a ditch

There was a large construction project involving the sewers outside Mr. Pyke Period's home. It is in the ditch nearby where Harold's body is found. The cause of death is not immediately clear. Cartell might have fallen in by accident while walking his dog or he might have been pushed and had machinery dumped on him. Alternatively, someone may have loosened a plank used to cross the ditch so he would fall in.

When he died is also a question. Inspectors Alleyn and Fox learn that Bimbo and Desiree held a scavenger hunt at their party, and one of the clues took them to the very same ditch. Andrew and Nicola observed the hunt and said all the party goers came and went without incident just before midnight.
6. While Inspector Alleyn is speaking to Connie about her brother's death, Alfred arrives with a condolence card for Connie from Mr. Pyke Period. Why is this unusual?

Answer: Connie had already received a condolence card from him that morning

First thing the morning of Harold's death, Alfred arrived at Connie's house to hand deliver a condolence card on behalf of Mr. Pyke Period. The same exact thing happened that afternoon. After she received the second card, Connie went over to Pyke Period's and discovered the police there, who informed her about the murder. Alleyn asked Connie if he could keep the second condolence card and she obliged.

It turns out, the first card Connie received was a mistake. It was actually meant for Desiree Bantling, whose brother had also recently died.
7. When Alleyn and Fox search Connie's home, they discover what item of Leonard's is missing?

Answer: Gloves

Leonard's gloves were supposed to be in his coat pocket, but they were missing. He swore they were there the last time he checked. Leonard also became angry with Moppett, as she is the one who pointed out the missing gloves to Alleyn. The gloves in question were made from sturdy leather. Alleyn suspected the killer needed to wear gloves of this kind in order to make it easier to push the debris from the work site on top of Harold Cartell.
8. During the denouement, which character is brutally savaged with a paperweight?

Answer: Mr. Pyke Period

Mr. Pyke Period was on the phone with Alleyn when all of a sudden he stopped short and disappeared from the other end. This happened late into the night and Alleyn immediately went to Mr. Pyke Period's to investigate. There he found Mr. Pyke Period beaten with a paperweight but still alive.
9. Which characters go missing near the end of the novel?

Answer: The dogs, Pixie and Li

Throughout the novel there was constant talk about how Harold's dog Pixie was unfriendly to other people and how Li, Connie's dog, constantly would run off. Near the end of the novel, both dogs were missing and everyone in town was out looking for them in the middle of the night.

This incident provided everyone with opportunity to attack Mr. Pyke Period, because anyone could have been in the area at the time of the attack.
10. Who killed Harold Cartell?

Answer: Connie Cartell

Connie was very protective of her ward Moppett and Moppett's boyfriend Leonard, despite their obvious criminal habits. When Harold told his sister he was going to go to the police over their criminal activity, Connie planned his murder. The murder occurred on the night of the Desiree and Bimbo's party, an event everyone in town attended except for Connie and Harold. This was a key fact for Alleyn, although he was distracted by the scavenger hunt that passed through the crime scene. The doctor put the time of death sometime soon after midnight, when most of the others were still at the party.

Connie attacked Mr. Pyke Period with the paperweight because of the mix up with the condolence cards. Because she received two condolence cards, Connie believed Mr. Pyke Period was playing a sadistic joke on her. In reality, Mr. Pyke Period did not know about Harold's death when he sent the first card, but Connie did not know that. She had just assumed he had discovered the body. This was another mistake she made as she seemingly knew about his death before it had been discovered.
