Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This novel, and others in the series, has a main character by what name?

Answer: DI Thorne

Detective Inspector Tom Thorne is the unorthodox, somewhat 'thorny', main character. Detective Sergeant Dave Holland is his partner. Detective Chief Superintendent Trevor Jessop is the seldom-involved head of the unit, and Detective Chief Inspector Russell Brigstocke is Tom's immediate superior.
2. In which British city is this story set?

Answer: London

Most of the Tom Thorne stories are set in London.
3. In this story, Tom goes undercover, sleeping 'rough' on the streets. Why?

Answer: 'Rough sleepers' are being kicked to death.

Three men have been savagely kicked, two dying and one on life support. Tom is at a loose end, supposedly off active duty following the recent death of his father in a fire.
4. What is the killer's 'trademark'?

Answer: Leaves 20 pound note pinned to victim's shirt.

The killer leaves a 20 pound note pinned to the shirt. Moony, one of the 'rough sleepers', removes this from the third victim.
5. With which 'rough sleeper' does Tom form a close association?

Answer: Spike

Tom meets Spike on his first night and more or less links up with him. Moony steals the 20 pounds and watch. Caroline is Spike's girlfriend. Radio Bob becomes the fourth victim.
6. Tattoos found on one of the victims and a hit-and-run victim elsewhere, indicate they were in the Army. Which section?

Answer: Cavalry

The tattoos, showing blood type and the letters S.O.F.A., trace them back to part of a four man crew of a Challenger tank. They got the tattoos just before being posted to the Middle East.
7. The sister of the hit-and-run victim brings in a video showing four soldiers holding guns on four prisoners. What happens to the prisoners?

Answer: They are shot

Three of the soldiers with guns are two of the victims. A fifth man videotapes the Iraqi prisoners being executed.
8. Who is the next victim, after the hit-and-run victim?

Answer: Terry

Terry owns the spot where Tom has been sleeping. On his return, he offers to share, but Tom spends the night with Spike and Caroline. Terry, mistaken for Tom, is killed.
9. Who is the last of the four soldiers still alive?

Answer: Eales

Jago was the hit-and-run victim. Hadingham had supposedly committed suicide a year before. Bonsey was the first kicking victim. Eales is found alive by a young constable while waiting for his partner to arrive for an interview.
10. Eales murders the constable (TDC Mackillop). What happens to him then?

Answer: He escapes overseas

Eales has been killing the other soldiers and others besides for the person who recorded the Iraqi murders. I'll leave you to discover who this person is. Clue:- he appears very early in the story.
