Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year of the third age was Aragorn born?

Answer: 2931

His father was slain only two years later. Aragorn was then taken to live with Elrond. His name was changed and he was not told of his past.
2. In 2942 of the third age, two events occur. One of these is the return of Bilbo to the Shire. What is the other?

Answer: Sauron returns to Mordor

Sauron returns in secret and reveals his existence in Mordor 9 years later.
3. In which year of the second age did Isildur take the ring?

Answer: 3441

This is the end of the second age. Sauron was killed, but not completely destroyed. His spirit lived on and he soon took form and regained his power in Mirkwook. As soon as Gandalf discovered that this was happening, Sauron fled and returned to Mordor. He then started to rebuild the tower of Barad-Dur. He had, by now, gained all of the Dwarf rings, and he began to build a huge army.
4. Aragorn is over 3000 years older than Arwen.

Answer: False

But she is over 2000 years older. Yikes! They still got married.
5. In the third age, in which year did the Nazgul reappear?

Answer: c. 1300

They reappeared before Sauron did, and took over land from between Gondor and Mordor.
6. In what year of the third age did the Balrog appear in Moria?

Answer: 1980

It killed Durin VI. In 'The Fellowship Of The Ring' it scares away all of the orcs from Moria and attacks the fellowship. Gandalf repels this and departs from the company for many miles. Without his presence, the fellowship breaks.
7. In what year of the third age did Gollum seize the ring from Deagol?

Answer: 2463

He then hid in the Misty Mountains. Hundreds of years later, in 'The Hobbit', Bilbo Baggins finds the ring has a scary meeting with Gollum. Gollum later follows Frodo to try and get back his precious. He steals it from Frodo at the cracks of Doom, and accidentally destroys the ring.
8. In which year of the third age did Smaug come to Erabor?

Answer: 2770

This happened before Bilbo was born. Erabor is another name for the Lonely Mountain. Bilbo and his dwarf companions search for treasure, stolen from them by Smaug the dragon. Smaug was later killed by Bard.
9. Elrond was given an elven ring from Cirdan in the third age.

Answer: False

He recieved it from Gil-Galad. Elron deserved this ring by far. Gandalf was given Cirdan's ring and he used it to fight the Balrog in Moria.
10. In the third age, did Sauron ever touch the ring?

Answer: No

He held it in the second age, but the ring was destroyed before he could get to it.
