Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The film shows Aragorn and Arwen bowing to the four hobbits and the rest of the people following suit. In the book, the crowd chanted praises to Frodo and Sam, and a minstrel sang to them a song of praise.

Answer: True

Aragorn led the people in a cry of "Praise them with great praise!" Frodo and Sam (and Gollum, really) had saved middle-earth by destroying the Ring of Power.
2. In the film, after killing the Witch King, Eowyn falls down and looks a bit dazed, but that is the extent of the damage. In the book, she is actually terribly hurt after the incident and ends up unconscious. Who heals her?

Answer: Aragorn

This is interesting, because it is how Aragorn is identified as the true king. It's sad the film missed this bit, because it was vital to the lives of three main characters that needed healing.
3. The film shows Sam leaving Frodo after Gollum manages to turn the Ringbearer against his faithful friend. In the book, Sam does leave Frodo for a while, but only after what horrible event?

Answer: Frodo is stabbed by Shelob

Sam leaves Frodo after Shelob stabs him with her venom. Sam thinks that Frodo is dead, and that he must finish the task of destroying the Ring, and so he takes the Ring, Frodo's sword, Sting, and the Light of Earendil, given to Frodo by Galadriel. It is only after he has just started to get the courage to actually leave Frodo that Sam hears orcs coming and puts the Ring on to hide from them.

He overhears one of the orcs saying that Frodo isn't really dead, only stunned. Sam then decides to rescue Frodo from the Tower.
4. At the end of the film, during the last battle, we see Gimli, Legolas, Merry and Pippin all fighting. In the book, one of these characters does NOT go to the last battle, who is it?

Answer: Merry

Merry was injured when he stabbed the Witch King, so he stayed behind in Minas Tirith in the Houses of Healing to recuperate. Pippin had not yet seen real battle, and the book actually leads the reader to believe (for a short time) that Pippin gets killed in the battle, but he doesn't - much to the relief of this reader who really liked the little guy!
5. In the film, it is Gimli who gives the crown to Gandalf for Aragorn's coronation in Minas Tirith, but who does this in the book - and why?

Answer: Frodo - because he saved Middle Earth

It was FRODO! Frodo's the winner, as there would have been nothing left to save if he hadn't completed his task!
6. The film doesn't show this at all, unfortunately, but during all the battles and horrors of war, the shire was not left untouched. In fact, it was quite disturbed by the evil of Saruman. The hobbits referred to Saruman as ----?

Answer: Sharkey

The hobbits were overrun by Saruman's "Sherrifs." He was known as Sharkey to them, which probably came from an orc derivative of "old-man" in the orc-language. Suited him though - he was quite the shark.
7. In the siege of Minas Tirith, in the film, we see many women and children running and screaming, and in the calmer scenes, milling about. In the book, all of the women and children were told to stay in their homes and not to make any noise at all.

Answer: False

In the book, the women and children had actually been sent out of Minas Tirith to hide in the hills. There were only a few women (in the houses of healing) and children left in the White City when the siege began. Denethor had at least thought of that much before his madness set in.
8. In the book, Denethor is killed by ----. In the film, Denethor is indirectly killed by Gandalf.

Answer: Denethor

This is one of the worst parts of the film, in my opinion. While Gandalf DID rescue Faramir from burning to death, he did NOT push Denethor onto the pyre that was already burning. Denethor set HIMSELF aflame in the book, thus ending his own life. I don't believe it was the author's intent to have Gandalf causing the death of someone who was not the real enemy. Denethor had long defended Minas Tirith, and while he had some SERIOUS character flaws, and basically lost his mind in the end, he wasn't someone who Gandalf needed to kill, in fact Gandalf tried to save him.
9. In the film, at the Grey Havens, we see Galadriel, Celeborn and Elrond watching as Frodo says good-bye to his friends. According to the book, which one of these three people that took the boat in the film actually stays behind in Middle Earth?

Answer: Celeborn

Celeborn stayed behind, while his wife Galadriel went into the West. Lothlorien eventually faded into the forest and it was said that Arwen went there and finally died, years after her beloved husband Aragorn did.
10. In the book Arwen gave her pendant to Bilbo, not Aragorn.

Answer: False

Arwen actually gave the pendant to FRODO! The pendant represented her immortality and ability to leave Middle Earth and join her people in the West. She gave it to Frodo so that he could leave if he chose to. Eventually, the memory of the quest and the pain of his old wound from the Witch King were too much for Frodo, and he joined the last party to leave Middle Earth. Sam stayed behind with his wife and new baby, Elanor.
