Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who swears an oath to serve as a knight of Gondor?

Answer: Pippin

Pippin is my favorite of the 2 knightly hobbits.... I love when he sings his shire songs to entertain Denethor.
2. Who is the shipwright at the Grey Havens?

Answer: Cirdan

He has a small part in the actual book as being the person who prepares the ships for sail to leave Middle Earth. Yet in the appendix his history in Middle Earth is revealed.
3. What is the name of the woman who helps Aragorn in the houses of healing?

Answer: Ioreth

I enjoyed her short lived character. She talks too much, ask her the time and she tells you how to build the clock!
4. What was the name that Elrond called Aragorn when he lived in Rivendell before he revealed to Aragorn his true identity?

Answer: Estel

They did not tell him his backround due to the danger that being Isuldur's heir could have put him in. They called him Estel because Estel means "hope" in Elvish.
5. What are the names of the Orc leaders who start the fight in the tower of Cirith Ungol?

Answer: Shagrat & Gorbag

They take care of most of the fighting so Samwise the "Elf warrior" can come in and make his dramatic rescue of Frodo.
6. Who is the first "ruffian" the Hobbits encounter as they enter the shire on their way home?

Answer: Bill Ferny

As if they did not have enough trouble with him when they were trying to leave the Shire; yet those stout hobbits take care of all matters.
7. Who sends this message to Aragorn? "Bid Aragorn remember the words of the seer, and remember the Paths of the Dead..."?

Answer: Elrond

The sons of Elrond gave Aragorn this message to help him choose the path of his destiny...
8. What day is it that Sam and Frodo awaken in Ithilien after being rescued from Mount Doom?

Answer: 14th of the New year OR 8th of April By shire reckoning

This is a wonderful part of the book, when the remaining members of the Fellowship are reunited and celebrate Aragorn's crowning and their great victory!
9. Which of these was not an option for the renaming of Bagshot Row once it was rebuilt after the "Scouring of the Shire?"

Answer: Gaffer's Garden

This is a great part of the book. "The Scouring of the Shire" has always been one of my favorite chapters.
10. Which of these people DOES sail off to the grey havens at the end of the book?

Answer: Gandalf

This is the sad end of the book as Bilbo, Frodo, Elrond, GANDALF, Galadriel and the high order of elves sails away from Middle Earth.
11. Before leaving, what is it that Bilbo gives Samwise when they meet him in Rivendell (after the War of the Ring) on their way back to the Shire?

Answer: Gold

"Last of the Smaug vintage" he tells him it might come in handy if he gets married*
12. In what year was Frodo Born? (All dates are of the Third Age of Middle Earth)

Answer: 2968

Frodo is actually 10 years older than Boromir. Bilbo was born in 2890, 30 years before the death of the old Took. This info is found in Appendix B.
13. What year was the Shire rebuilt? (According to the Shire Calendar)

Answer: 1420

By the Shire Reckoning of course. "A generation later one might hear an old gaffer in an inn after a well-earned ale put down his mug and sigh 'Ah! That was a proper fourteen-twenty that was'..."
14. How old was Bilbo when he passed the Old Took?

Answer: 131 years old

The Old took was 130 Years old. On Bilbo's Birthday (on the way to the Grey Havens) he was 131 years old... Gotta love that old Hobbit.
15. What is the name of the Sceptre that Elrond gives to Aragorn after he is crowned because it is a heirloom of the line of Numenorean kings?

Answer: The Sceptre of Annuminas

This is a large part of the coronation of Aragorn. Elrond finally gives him the Sceptre because he finally earned his rightful place as The One True King of Gondor!
16. Which of these Characters Does NOT die in the books?

Answer: Faramir

He is saved by the hands of the king after being wounded in battle.
17. What is the name of the only other battle fought in the Shire besides the Battle of Bywater?

Answer: Battle of Greenfields

It is mentioned after the completion of the Battle of Bywater and elaborated on in the Appendices.
18. What was the Date that Frodo was stabbed atop Weathertop?

Answer: October the Sixth

Sam notices that Frodo always falls ill on that date for years after their return to the Shire because the wound of the Morgul blade will never fully heal. He also falls ill on March 13, for that is the day he was stung by Shelob in the tunnels.
19. True or False? Do Faramir and Eowyn wed?

Answer: True

Though she is a tough lady he finally wins over her heart and unites the kingdoms of Rohan and Gondor.
20. What is Gandalf's last line in the book? "Go in Peace...

Answer: ....I will not say do not weep; for not all tears are an evil."

This is a fitting way to end the book, as simple as it began. Gandalf always elegantly spoke, and always knew the right thing to say.
