Kate Herrick had received a phone call from her grandmother, asking her to visit. Although she did not want to give details over the telephone, she did say that it had to do with Rose Cottage, Kate's childhood home.

Although Kate was a widow, her husband had been dead for over two years. She was a trained teacher, but at the time of the story had given up teaching and was working for a friend in a plant nursery.
2. What relation is Kate Herrick to Annie Pascoe, the lady who has been keeping an eye on Rose Cottage?

Answer: Goddaughter

Annie Pascoe was Kate's godmother and had been the best friend of Kate's mother. Although a different generation, Annie was a good friend to both Kate and her grandmother.
