Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Wedge Antilles helped create the Rebel Alliance's most elite squadron, Rogue Squadron. After the Bacta War, though, he wanted to try something different. He started putting together what would become Wraith Squadron. Who did Wedge bring along to help him?

Answer: Wes Janson

All these pilots were veterans from the Rebel Alliance days. Wes and Wedge joined well before the Battle of Yavin. Luke and Hobbie both joined the Rebels just before the Battle of Yavin, though Hobbie was injured, and could not fly at the time.

Tycho was an Alderaan native, and soon after the destruction of his homeworld by the Empire, he defected.

Luke would soon create Rogue Squadron, which all these pilots would fly in. They all flew in Battle of Hoth and the Battle of Endor.

By the time "Wraith Squadron" took place, the Rebel Alliance had become the New Republic. Wedge wanted to try a new squadron concept, and took Wes along with him to help. Tycho and Hobbie stayed to lead Rogue Squadron. Luke had since left the military, and was focusing on rebuilding the Jedi order.

Later, in the novel "X-wing: Starfighters of Adumar", Red Flight would consist of veteran pilots Wedge, Tycho, Wes, and Hobbie.
2. While all the members had to be capable pilots, Wraith Squadron was built as a commando unit first, and each member brought a set of special skills to the team. Who was the squadron's designated sniper?

Answer: Myn Donos

Apart from the leaders of the new squadron, Myn Donos was the first candidate added to the list of potential pilots.

Myn was a sniper for a counterinsurgency unit in the Corellian Armed Forces, before he transferred to the Rebel Alliance as a fighter pilot. He became the leader of Talon Squadron, a new unit trained by Wes Janson and Hobbie. It was ambushed, and Myn was the only survivor. Despite being cleared of any wrongdoing, Wedge guessed that no one else in the New Republic would want him, and had him put on his list of potential recruits.

After losing his squadron, Myn ceased to display any emotion, spoke only when necessary, and performed every action with military precision. It would become a goal of his fellow pilots to get him to open up.
3. The Rebel Alliance and the New Republic were diverse organizations, employing many different species, and beings that spoke different languages. Some did not even have the physical capabilities to speak Basic. Which Wraith needed an electronic translator?

Answer: Voort "Piggy" saBinring

Piggy was a Gamorrean. They were large, strong, and brutish, but not known for their intelligence. They were often employed as bodyguards or bouncers. Piggy was an exception, though. He was the result of a twisted Imperial research project that tried to improve the intelligence of various species so they could be used as spies. He was the only survivor of the project, with all the other specimens either dying in the process, or committing suicide.

As a result, Piggy was a genius, and loved math. He could perform very large calculations in his head, and was the best at concocting hyperspace navigation routes. This did not change his physiology, though, and he could not create the sounds needed for common languages. He had a small translator embedded in his throat to translate for him, instantly.
4. Bacta was a miracle healing agent that could be used to boost the immune system, and speed regeneration. Ironically, Wraith Squadron's medic was allergic to the stuff, and had more prosthetic parts than any other member. Who was the squadron's medic?

Answer: Ton Phanan

Ton Phanan and Face were paired up initially, and the two jokesters instantly hit it off. Ton would often joke about his condition, but it was later revealed that this was at least partially a cover for some darker emotions. He was fully aware of his mortality and aging.

The fact was that he was not getting younger, and that he seemed to acquire more and more prosthetics and time went on. Prosthetics were also not very attractive, and he was struggling in the romance department. While always a loyal friend, Ton hid most of his painful inner feelings.
5. As both commandos and fighter pilots, the Wraiths loved to blow things up. Their unofficial motto even became "What do we blow up first?". Who was the Wraith's demolitions expert who particularly enjoyed explosives?

Answer: Kell Tainer

Kell Tainer was originally in Page's Commandos as a demolitions expert, and had worked with Rogue Squadron in the past on Borleias. He tried to become a starfighter pilot, but had a few problems in some simulator runs, damaging his virtual starfighters. He claimed unresponsive controls both times, and his unwillingness to take responsibility for his mistakes brought him close to washing out of the training program. As a near-washout pilot with commando experience, Kell was the perfect candidate for Wedge's new squadron of misfits.

He helped coin the unofficial Wraith Squadron motto, "What do we blow up first?".
6. As commandos, the Wraiths were expected to encounter the enemy at close range. Sometimes they also had to be silent about it, making hand-to-hand combat expertise a must. Who was the Wraith's original close combat specialist?

Answer: Voort "Piggy" saBinring

Piggy's only recognition at the squadron's formation was that he was skilled at hand-to-hand combat, and capable of infiltrating Gammorean units. As a Gammorean, he had natural strength, and he was very capable of using it. He was a near-washout because his commanding officer claimed he'd been struck by Piggy. Piggy pointed out that the report was false, because it was completed a mere half-hour after the purported incident. No one struck by Piggy was ever conscious within a half-hour.

Gammoreans were known for having only rudimentary intelligence. Piggy's mind was artificially enhanced to the point of nearly becoming a computer. His ability to perform large calculations quickly was used by the Wraiths more often than his physical prowess.

Kell Tainer was also well-educated in hand-to-hand combat, and probably would have been considered one of the best in the Wraiths until Shalla Nelprin joined in "X-wing: Iron Fist". Shalla's sister, Vula, was Kell's trainer in the commandos.
7. Being fighter pilots in enemy territory often meant that the Wraiths had little support from friendly forces. They had to do almost every job themselves, including maintenance on their ships. Who was the squadron's mechanic?

Answer: Kell Tainer

Before Kell Tainer joined the military, he worked as a skilled mechanic on a freighter. He worked well with Wraith Squadron's regular deck crew to make sure all their fighters were in top shape. He was also able to fix starfighters when out on missions. He even helped cobble together Piggy's attack vehicle when Wraith Squadron flew into a hyperspace minefield.
8. One of the experts the Wraiths had was a vehicle specialist. The Wraiths' vehicle specialist was so confident, that they even challenged Wedge Antilles, arguably the best pilot the New Republic had, to a race through the canyon on Folor. Who was the Wraith's vehicle specialist?

Answer: Falynn Sandskimmer

Falynn Sandskimmer was from Tatooine, and was known for her fiery temper. The other Wraiths found out it was because she was from the same planet that the famous Luke Skywalker was from, she was always compared to him. Though she never met Skywalker, she grew to resent him.

Growing up on a moisture farm, Falynn gained a lot of mechanical and vehicle experience, earning her the title of Vehicle Expert for Wraith Squadron.

She was brash enough to say that even the great Wedge Antilles was losing his edge as he aged. Wedge challenged her to a race. She admitted that he was still a better pilot because she hadn't been fully trained, so instead Wedge proposed the use of old ore haulers collecting dust on the training base. It was a close race until Wedge maneuvered his hauler to crush hers, and sped to the finish. She accused Wedge of cheating, but the Commander explained to his recruit that in a real dogfight there was no such thing. The Wraiths all learned just what kind of teacher Wedge was, and most of them lived a lot longer because of his training.
9. Being part of a technologically advance society, the Wraiths' work place featured a number of computers. One of the squadron's specialists was a hacker (known as a "slicer") who could infiltrate computer networks and manipulate them for the Wraiths' benefit. Who was the squadron's first slicer?

Answer: Eurrsk "Grinder" Thri'ag

Grinder was known for being silent, antisocial, and self-serving with the Wraiths, though in secret he pulled many pranks on his fellow pilots. He was paired with Falynn Sandskimmer, who was also arrogant, overconfident, and detached. The two ended up working quite well together, as a wingmen.

Grinder was instrumental in the evacuation of Folor Base, notably by hacking into a planetary computer system (which he apparently did on a regular basis to "keep his skills up"). He also was important in maintaining the Nightcaller ruse.

Despite never appearing attached to his fellow pilots, he did form a bond. Instead of fleeing, he insisted on staying with his wing, Falynn, in a dangerous gambit to destroy the Star Destroyer Implacable.
10. Despite the egos and bravado that pilots often displayed, no squadron was immune to losing pilots on the dangerous missions they flew. Who was the first Wraith to ever be killed in action?

Answer: Jesmin Ackbar

Jesmin Ackbar was the niece of the famous Admiral Ackbar who coordinated the attack on the second Death Star. She followed her uncle into the New Republic military, as a starfighter pilot.

Jesmin achieved top grades as both a pilot and a communications expert, but because of her relations, she was never allowed to see real combat. Feeling her training was being wasted, Jesmin requested to join Wedge's new squadron of screw-ups.

As a communications expert, Jesmin understood the advanced technology needed to send hyperspace signals, and the protocols. This helped her parse out hidden or forged signals that might indicate an ambush.

Jesmin's fighter was hit during the attack on the Blood Nest pirates. Her inertial compensator was destroyed, and she was subjected to the strong forces that fighters experienced when flying. She passed out before being able to eject. Kell Tainer tried to save her by breaking her descent with his own X-wing, and was given a medal for his efforts. It was still not enough, and Jesmin's fighter smashed into a hillside.
