 At the very start of the book he is a PFC getting ready to go play poker after duty on New Year's Eve. He was just about to be promoted to Corporal.
2. What nickname did McCoy earn in China, that would follow him for the rest of his life?

Answer: Killer

 He earned it by killing two Italian Marines with a knife, when he was ambushed by them.
3. What is the problem with Ed Banning's wife, Milla?

Answer: She's a White Russian

 He met her through an ad in the paper for language lessons.
4. What does Banning call Lt. Macklin, that is a great insult?

Answer: Slimy Creature

 B.A.M. is a term for female Marines. Unfortunately I can't repeat what it means in a family site.
5. Even though the numbers got exaggerated in the retelling over time, how many people did McCoy actually kill in China?

Answer: 20

 There were the two Italian Marines and then eighteen Chinese Bandits.
6. Who did McCoy have an affair with in China?

Answer: Ellen Feller

 She was the wife of the Christian Missionary, whom the Marine convoy was escorting. The affair was instigated entirely by her, a trait that Griffin uses in a lot of his romances in this (and other) series.
7. What school did McCoy and Pickering attend together?

Answer: Platoon Leader Course

 This is whre McCoy and Pickering learn how to be Marine officers.
8. Why did Tommy McCoy join the Corps?

Answer: It was join up or go to jail

 He got fired from his job at Bethleham Steel for beating up his boss.
9. Who endorsed Lt. Macklin's potentially lethal efficiency report?

Answer: Maj. "Chesty" Puller

 If Chesty Puller endorsed it, it must be bad!

Answer: He won the Medal of Honor

 Children of winners of the Medal of Honor are given admittance to the sevice academies. One went to West Point and joined the USMC, while the other went to Annapolis.
11. Why was MGySgt Jack (NMI) Stecker discarged from the Marine Corps?

Answer: To accept a commission

 He was given a direct commission as a Captain, something that even then was incredibly rare.
12. McCoy kept getting "Maggie's Drawers". What does that mean?

Answer: He missed the target

 That was when Lt. Macklin was messing around in the pits at the rifle range. Yet another thing that, had there not been a state of emergency declared, would have seen him booted from the Corps.
13. After getting his commission, what field did McCoy go into?

Answer: Intelligence

 It wouldn't have been much of a story line if he went into Personnel. No offence to personnel types out there, as my father was in Marine Personnel. There just isn't as much drama in a records jacket as there is in spying on the enemy.
14. What specialty was "Pick" Pickering headed for?

Answer: Aviation

 They were going to make him an assistant manager of the Officer's Club, but an old war buddy of his father, General "Doc" McInerny, intervened. He was then transfered to "Doc's" office as an aide until they could figure out what he wanted to do.
15. Who does McCoy fall in love with?

Answer: Ernie Sage

 He had an affair with Ellen in China, and thought that he might be in love with her. But she was just using him. Milla was Cpt. Banning's wife. Elly Stecker was Jack Stecker's wife.
16. What is "Dutch" Shultz's occupation?

Answer: Service station owner

 He is McCoy's brother in law. He owns a service station in McCoy's home town of Norristown, PA.
17. While McCoy was in China, what did he think that his sister was doing?

Answer: Becoming a nun

 Ann Marie met Dutch while she was waiting tables.
18. What happens to Lt. McCoy on his first assignment as an officer?

Answer: He arrives during the attack on Pearl Harbor

 He was in one of the B-17's that were arriving from the States, and was shot at.

 Stecker's oldest son went down with the USS Arizona on December 7, 1941.

Answer: He doesn't

 Later in the series McCoy has an opportunity to get his own revenge on Macklin, but decides to take the high road.
